Review Of Peter Luger Steak House

Steak (R)evolution Visiting Peter Luger Steak House in Brooklyn, NY.

Good for:Dining options:Neighborhood:Everything I had hoped for .

We were seated promptly then greeted by our waiter Martin . He was extremely attentive without being intrusive. His description of the items on the menu right down to his suggestion of the key lime pie for dessert were perfect. I feel his professionalism made the dining experience all the better to what ended up being one of the best lunches I have ever had . I had the bacon to start with followed by the ribeye with the creamed spinach and the German potatoes. The steak was cooked medium rare and was absolutely delicious, the spinach was honestly the best I have had , the potatoes were quite overcooked and the key lime pie was wonderful. I would say if you like steak and the feeling of eating in a time honored establishment this has to be experienced at least once .

We visited this steak house and had a reservation. For the price of the steak I would have thought it would be a good steak. Grisly and not that tender of a steak. I make better steaks at home. Service was so so. We had steak for two. My husband said the spinach was good, side dish. Would not recommend this establishment. Save your money and go to another steak house.

Peter Luger Steak House is a steakhouse located in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, New York City, with a second location in Great Neck, New York, on Long Island. It was named to the James Beard Foundation‘s list of “America’s Classics” in 2002 and is the third oldest operating steakhouse in New York City, after Keens and Old Homestead Steakhouse. On January 10 2022, Peter Luger’s and Caesar’s Palace announced the opening of a third location in Ceasar’s Palace Las Vegas, in the location formerly occupied by Rao’s.

The Brooklyn location is known for its long wooden bar, and the “dining rooms have a Teutonic air, with exposed wooden beams, burnished oak wainscoting, brasschandeliers and weathered beer-hall tables”.

In 2019, New York Times restaurant critic Pete Wells gave the restaurant a scathing, zero-star review, a decline from Frank Bruni‘s 2007 two-star review, a three-star review in 1995 by Ruth Reichl, and a four-star review in 1968 by Craig Claiborne.

The Dining Room And Our Meal

Just around our twenty minute wait time until our reservation, the maître d called our name and showed us to our table. We were seated in the dining room to the left of the bar. This room has a wall filled with large windows along the street, so during lunchtime there was an abundance of natural light filling the room. In retrospect, it was probably too much light entering the room as instead of feeling cozy, it just felt, well, it felt barren.

The room has dark wood floors and some paneling on the walls, but the windows make the bare wood tabletops and rickety chairs stand out way too much. I just felt like it was a really fancy diner and not a legendary steakhouse and when youre living up to an image, first impressions matter.

Upon seating, we were presented with our menus. If you had any questions about what you are having, youre having steak.

Our waiter promptly arrived at our table and after seeing we already had drinks, said hed be right back with some bread and water . Its NYC, so we said that tap would be fine.

The bread basket had a variety of choices and plenty for two people

This was going to be our only regular meal for the day, so we decided to get an appetizer of the sliced tomatoes with Lugers Own sauce .

I was a little surprised when all this consisted of was one large sliced Beefsteak tomato with a gravy bowl full of Lugers Own sauce

Our sides of broccoli and french fries arrived at the same time.

The Restaurant And Checking In

Getting to the restaurant wasnt very hard. We took the J train from Wall Street to Marcy Ave. and from there it was only a 5 min walk to Peter Luger. We just needed to head in the direction of the sign on the side of the nearby building.

Walking through the front door, youre immediately in the bar area.

The large wood bar takes up a majority of the space available. It was not this empty when we visited. Working our way through the crowd, we made it up to the host stand/cashier. I gave our name to the host, who found my name on the list and marked us as there. We had arrived about 20 minutes early so we found a seat at the bar and checked out the manual cash register and the oversized beer steins.

Restaurant Review: Peter Luger Steak House Brooklyn Ny

Peter Luger Steak House, in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, is a New York institution. The location dates back to 1887, fifteen years before the opening of the nearby Williamsburg Bridge. Originally named Carl Lugers Café, Billiards and Bowling Alley, Peter owned the establishment while his nephew Carl ran the kitchen. Peter Luger died in 1941 and the restaurant subsequently declined until it closed in 1950 and was put up for auction. The winning bid was from one of the restaurants loyal patrons, Sol Forman, who was disappointed he had to find a new location to have lunch with clients after dining at Peter Luger for the previous 25 years.

The restaurant has been managed by the Forman family ever since. Peter Luger Steak House has been named Best Steakhouse in New York by the Zagat survey for the last 30 years and has a Michelin star.

Even though Sharon and I both grew up in the New York area, we never managed to eat at Peter Luger before we moved to Florida. Mainly because this wasnt the type of place wed try to visit back then. We decided to rectify that on a quick weekend trip when we had no other plans.

    Peter Luger Steak House

I can count on Peter Luger Steak House in Brooklyn to produce certain sensations at every meal.

There is the insistent smell of broiled dry-aged steak that hits me the minute I open the door and sometimes sooner, while Im still outside on the South Williamsburg sidewalk, producing a raised pulse, a quickening of the senses and a restlessness familiar to anyone who has seen a tiger that has just heard the approach of the lunch bucket.

There is the hiss of butter and melted tallow as they slide down the hot platter, past the sliced porterhouse or rib steak and their charred bones, to make a pool at one end. The server will spoon some of this sizzling fat over the meat he has just plated, generally with some line like Here are your vitamins.

There is the thunk of a bowl filled with schlag landing on a bare wood table when dessert is served, and soon after, the softer tap-tap-tap of waxy chocolate coins in gold foil dropped one at a time on top of the check.

And after Ive paid, there is the unshakable sense that Ive been scammed.

I dont remember when the doubts began, but they grew over time.

Some things are the same as ever. The shrimp cocktail has always tasted like cold latex dipped in ketchup and horseradish. The steak sauce has always tasted like the same ketchup and horseradish fortified by corn syrup.

The Staff & Peter Lugers Magic

Peter Luger Steak House, Brooklyn NYC New York

We have a very diverse and loyal staff. A lot of our people have been here for years, some for fiftytwo years! There is a whole range of experience amongst our staff. A lot of people who work here, make careers here. Its not customary in the food world. Specifically in New York. In food, there tends to be a high turnaround. We are fortunate enough that we don’t really have that problem. We take great care of our employees, and in turn they stay with us a long time. There is also a great opportunity to work your way up here. Many of our employees start as a sides cook then become a line cook… Our head chef started as a dishwasher and worked his way up. I think that is a really good way of doing it. We also are fortunate in that we know we will always be busy. So if the people are coming in, we know we have the best servers to serve them. We have great guys in our kitchen to give them the best steak they can have and the rest takes care of itself. I like to call the rest, Peter Lugers magic.
