Tomahawk Steak In Oven
You can follow one of two avenues to prepare the cut using the oven the classic or the reverse sear techniques.
Classic. Here the Tomahawk is hard seared in a skillet or on the grill after which its transfered to the oven to finish cooking to the desired temperature, rested and served.
Reverse Sear. As the name implies, this method reverses the order of the steps. To reverse sear Tomahawk steak first it is cooked it in the oven, until its internal temperature reaches 100-110 F. Next it is seared over a hot grill or in a suitably sized skillet with cooking oil and/or butter until the temperature for the desired doneness is reached.
NOTE: The best results are achieved when the oven is set at a lower temperature, we like 300 F, some people go as low as 225 F. However, in a restaurant setting when diners generally do not have the patience to wait for their food, oven temperatures are often set much higher Chris says that at the various restaurants he has worked at they regularly cook the steak in a 425-450 F oven.
Using A Grill And A Pan For Preparing Your Tomahawk Steak
This is another suitable way to prepare the Tomahawk steak, which starts by following the low and slow instructions from above, and then instead of placing the streak on the hot zone of the grill, to finish cooking it in a hot pan.
This is a good idea if you have set up your smoker to a low and slow setup and dont want to reset it to a high temperature for searing.

Do Tomahawk Steaks Taste Better
The tomahawk steak tastes delicious, especially if the meat has sufficient marbling. Cuts of meat closest to the bone taste the best. The challenge is getting the thick steak cooked correctly, yet its the thickness that makes it taste so good. Because the steak is so thick, chefs can get the crust to brown while the inside stays juicy and colorful.
A thin cut does not cook in the same way as a thick onethe thin cuts of meat brown through before the crust browns. While the thickness is a challenge, it is also a blessing because it gives you time to get the inside and outside just right.

How To Cook A Tomahawk Steak On A Grill Or Smoker
Looking to cook a tomahawk steak? Look no further.
Since the steak is so big, when it comes to cooking methods, we need to slowly apply heat rather than sear it straight off. We wouldnt want burnt edges and a raw inside.
Many people choose to oven cook or skillet their meat, but in my experience, that isnt the best heat method available. Popping your tomahawk ribeye on the grill will do wonders for the flavor.
Their thickness makes it all too easy to end up with a burnt exterior and a cold, raw middle A prewarmed steak will sear much faster, minimizing the amount of overcooked meat under the surface.

Is This A Decent Price For A Tomahawk Steak Vancouver Canada

I got some at Costco in Ottawa for $29.99/kg last week. Seems quite pricy for the cut in my opinion.
Ive had some great Costco steaks but infortunalty I break the bank on bulk everytime I go there so I try to avoid it.
I agree. I get Prime ribeyes from Costco for CAD $41/kg, which has much better marbling than that of OP’s steaks.
Tomahawk ribeyes are a presentation thing. If you think the big bone is worth spending money on, be my guest.
That is a lot of money for average looking choice beef. I think you can do better, but there is a value to the convenience of shopping at a nice grocery store compared to say Costco.
The top piece is not too bad. Chuck end cut for sure

Tomahawk Steak Vs Ribeye
The tomahawk steak and ribeye are cut from the same part of the cow. One notable difference is the bone that protrudes from the tomahawk steak. The ribeye steak just has the meat and is much smaller.
A tomahawk usually weighs between 30 and 60 ounces and is two-inches thick. A 60-ounce steak weighs 3.75 pounds! The ribeye is usually a 12-ounce cut that is about an inch thick.
How Long Does Smoked Meat Last
Smoked meats usually have a shelf life of 8-10 days, depending on the conditions under which they were stored and the weight of the meat.
However, you should ideally cook the meat 1-2 days after bringing it home.
Using the internal temperature to gauge when the meat is still safe to eat is a good idea.
Maintain the temperature of your fridge to less than 40 degrees Fahrenheit and keep the meat wrapped in a clean plastic bag.
If the meat starts to smell funny, has a slimy texture, or a bad color, its time to throw it out.
When the meat starts to smell bad, its part of the bacteria family is already present and will multiply quickly if its not disposed of soon.

Other Names For This Steak
The name tomahawk is rather fitting, due to its tomahawk ax-like appearance. Just like many steaks and cuts of meat, this mouth-watering goodness also has a few other names:
- Rib Steak – Since this steak comes from the rib primal and still has the bone attached, its only natural that itll be referred to by this name.
- Cowboy Steak – Once you shorten the bone on a tomahawk steak, it is then classed as a cowboy steak .
Chances are, your butcher will know what this steak is.
Steaks Show Their True Colors
The color of the steak you wish to purchase is very important. Normally the color should be a warm red. This is a great indicator of the meats freshness. Also, the firmness, or squishiness, of the steak may help indicate this. As a rule of thumb, the best stakes are soft to the touch when raw. Always bear this in mind when you visit the Houston meat market.
Indeed, youll end up making the right choice of steak when you follow the tips discussed above. Nevertheless, you will always get the best of steaks when you deal with the right butcher shop. How Does The Price Of A Tomahawk Steak Compare To A Normal Ribeye
How much you are paying for your Tomahawk Steaks depends on the quality of the beef you are buying and who you are getting it from.
However, you should expect to pay up to three times more than your normal bone-in Ribeye.
The Chicago Steak Company is selling two USDA Prime dry-aged Tomahawk Ribeyes for $239.95 when you can get four USDA Prime dry-aged Bone-in Ribeyes for $274.95.
DeBragga will sell you a pair of dry-aged Prime Tomahawk steaks for $285.00, which is more than their Culinary Olympics winning 24oz Miyazaki Wagyu Ribeye.
While it might seem like that is a reasonable increase when you are moving from a 24-ounce Ribeye to a 40-ounce Tomahawk, it is essential to bear in mind that a lot of that weight is going to be bone and not meat.
You can expect to spend an average of about $100 on a quality Tomahawk Steak, and the reality is that around $50 to $80 of that is paying for a considerable length of bone and a more Instagram ready steak.
