How To Cook A Bone

How to Cook Ham Steak

A bone-in ham steak is a thick cut of ham, resembling a piece of steak from a cow. It is an easier and faster way to enjoy the taste of ham, without having to slow-cook a whole ham. A ham steak can be cooked numerous ways for different flavor dimensions. It is high in sodium since it is cured, like a whole ham, but goes well with fruit, mustard, honey, brown sugar, mashed potatoes or vegetables.

Preheat the grill to medium.

Grill the ham steak for five minutes.

What Cut Is Ham Steak

A ham steak is just a thick slice of ham that’s been cut from a whole ham roast. It’s a great option when you need a little bit of ham for a small family meal or to add flavor to a recipe , but you don’t want to splurge on an entire ham roast. Ham steaks are also convenient to freeze and keep on hand for a quick-thaw dinner — no extra grocery run required.

You can find ham steaks with the bone-in, but I typically purchase the boneless version. Find individual ham steaks packaged in the meat section , or ask the salesperson behind the deli counter to cut you a thick steak from the larger roast .

The Glaze Maple Or Brown Sugar

Once the steak has finished cooking, it gets a sweet ending with a brush of pure maple syrup .

If you want to skip the maple syrup, you could also make your Ham Steaks with a brown sugar glaze. If youre going this route, have a 1/3 cup brown sugar plus 2 tablespoons of butter on hand.

Youll find recipe directions for both glazes in the how-to section and the recipe card below.

How to Cook Ham Steak
  • Get the skillet nice and hot over medium or medium-high heat before adding the meat. This will help it get nicely browned and crisp on the outside, which gives the ham and the glaze great flavor.
  • Use yellow mustard for a more mild flavor, or try 2 tablespoons dijon mustard for a little bit more zesty kick.
  • Garnish each serving with fresh parsley, thyme, chives, or other herbs for a bit of color and a bright finishing touch.
  • The nutrition information for this recipe is merely an estimate, assuming about 12 ounces of meat and consumption of the entire skillet of glaze. The exact nutritional value of your recipe will depend on the amount of glaze that you actually consume, as well as the size and cut of your ham.

Ham Steak Recipe Variations

  • One ham steak serves about 2 people, but you can easily scale up the ingredients to feed a larger family. For instance, if you’re serving 4 people, you can pan-fry 2 steaks and double the ingredients to make twice as much glaze.
  • You can also grill ham steaks on an indoor grill pan or outdoor grill. I recommend brushing the steak with butter before putting it on the grill . Prepare the glaze in a skillet for serving, if you like.
  • Make the glaze spicy by adding a dash of cayenne or crushed red pepper flakes. Sweet heat!

  • tip 1 You may need to ask your butcher to cut the ham steak for you. That way, youll buy exactly what you need.
  • tip 2 Ham Steak Fettuccine: After the ham has been cooked, cut it into 1/2-inch cubes and toss with cooked fettuccine and a dash of cream.
  • tip 3 Youll want to make more than enough of this sweet and tangy sauce so you can have it on hand for grilled pork chops, too!

What Kind Of Ham To Use

I like a thick-cut sliced ham steak for this recipe because it gives it more of a main-dish type feel. There are many options for sliced ham or sliced ham quarters in the grocery store and you can use just about any of them. If you end up with ham that is sliced more thinly, youll just cook for a shorter amount of time during the browning step below. And you may need to make more glaze if youre trying to cover more pieces.

We like a real thick-cut, like ½-inch thick-sliced ham steaks for this sheet pan recipe. The ham steak is already fully cooked, you just have to focus on getting these crispy edges glazed with the honey mustard sauce, and the veggies crisp-tender! Thinner ham steaks will do just fine but might dry up a little bit while vegetables need to be fully cooked. Is Ham Steak Already Cooked

Ham steaks are not normally pre-cooked, but some are. The ham steaks that come in a large slice from the deli section are usually smoked but still technically raw meat.

The ham steaks that are logs of meat reconstituted from various parts of the ham are usually pre-cooked or smoked and no longer considered raw but should still be heated through before eating.

Check the packaging before cooking to ensure youre using the right kind of ham steak for this recipe.

How To Cook Southern Cola Ham Steak

Brown the steaks on both sides for 5-7 minutes.

In a bowl, stir together the cola, Worcestershire sauce, and brown sugar.

How Are They Sold

Youll usually find Ham Steaks sold near the other pork products in the meat aisle of your grocery store, but they might also be located near the breakfast meats, such as bacon or sausages.

They are sold in individual packages, both boneless and bone-in, and can range from 8-ounces to just over a pound in weight. The packaging will indicate whether or not it is cooked. More often than not, youll find them pre-cooked.

FRESH VS. FULLY-COOKED

Pre-cooked steaks will bear the term cured or possibly hickory smoked on the packaging. Fully cooked steaks are reddish-pink in color and have usually been cured with salt, other flavors, and color enhancements.

Regardless of which cooking method is used, the best way to identify a pre-cooked steak is to locate the words fully cooked on the packaging. This way you know exactly youre working with.

If Ham Steaks are not pre-cooked, they are not safe to consume before cooking. Uncooked steaks will say fresh on the packaging.

What Happens If My Air Fryer Starts Smoking

If your ham is a little on the fatty side, you may notice alittle smoke coming from your air fryer.

This occurs when fat drips off the food and goes down in the drawer.

Since air fryers work with 360-degree air circulation, the air brings the fat from the basket up and it hits the coils near the fan on top.

If this happens, stop your air fryer immediately and do oneof two things. Either add a piece of bread under the basket or add a tiny bitof water under the basket.

I like to cook with a piece of bread under the basket any time I cook something that can be considered fatty.

We always have extra bread, so it doesnt put any extra bread to waste.

How To Make Ham Steaks In The Air Fryer

Preheat your air fryer to 380 degrees.

Combine the melted butter and brown sugar in a bowl and mixwell to combine. It may look like a decent amount of mixture to add to the ham,but its the perfect amount. I promise.

Place the ham steak in the preheated air fryer and baste onhalf of the brown sugar and butter mixture.

Cook the ham slice for about 5-6 minutes then flip it over.

Baste the remaining butter and brown sugar mixture on topand add the honey, if using.

Continue to cook for another 5-6 minutes.

Remove ham steaks from the air fryer and enjoy!

Whats Great About Ham Steaks

Ham Steaks with Michael’s Home Cooking

Ham steak is so versatile you can serve it in so many different ways and never get tired of it. Even cooking and serving it as is with your next holiday feast is a great idea!

Unlike larger chunks of ham that can take hours to cook, ham steak is incredibly quick and can be finished in just a few minutes! Depending on the type you buy your ham steak could be a simple slice off of a larger ham or it could be a processed log of ham.

Both are great for various reason- my favorite reasons for buying them is because theyre often on sale and cheap or because they cook quickly and I dont have to worry about an entire hams worth of leftovers to work with.

Sometimes just buying a simple ham steak is a great way to cut costs and save a little stress in the kitchen. Of course, this ham steak recipe is completely stressed free and couldnt be any easier!
