Avoiding The Deep Fryer

Honestly, this might be hard to hear but, one of the biggest reasons why your store-bought frozen french fries might not taste nearly as good as the fries you order at a restaurant is that you’re not using an actual deep fryer. They’re called french fries for a reason. If you want legit, delicious fried potatoes you have to, well, fry them. Yes, the oil will splatter and, yes, the cleanup might be a bit gnarlier but, how badly do you want it?

We’re just pointing out, you always have the option to actually dip those frozen fries into a vat of hot oil, in order to achieve the perfect flavor and texture. If you don’t have a commercial or small home-friendly fryer, you can always use a sturdy pot and a thermometer designed for hot oil. According to a chef on Quora, placing a basket into the pot to fry the fries is ideal but if you don’t have that, you can always use a skimmer to safely remove them once they’ve fried to perfection.

Air Fryer Steak Fries From Frozen

You can also make this recipe using frozen steak fries. Some good brands are Ore-Ida or McCain.

Just be sure to note whether they already have seasoning on them, and adjust the seasoning you add accordingly. If they already contain salt dont add any more , but you can still add the other seasoning ingredients if you wish.

Use An Air Fryer For Extra Crispiness

Lauren Koeppe, a private chef who founded Create Hospitality, told Insider that using an air fryer was a good way to get perfectly crispy french fries.

“Set your air fryer to 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 12 to 14 minutes. Make sure to pull out the tray at the five- or six-minute mark and toss the fries around, and they should come out perfect,” Koeppe said.

How Do You Cook Frozen French Fries Step By Step

Frozen french fries are great for making quick meals. However, if you want to get the best results from your frozen french fries, you need to know how to cook them properly. To achieve the perfect texture, you need to thaw the frozen french fries completely before cooking them. Then, you need to cook them until they reach the desired degree of doneness. For instance, if you want to cook frozen french fries until they are crispy, you should cook them for about 10 minutes. On the other hand, if you want to bake them until they are soft, you should cook them longer, usually around 20 minutes. Finally, if you want to grill them, you should cook them only for 5 minutes.

FROZEN Fried Rice

First you have to know this YOU DO NOT HAVE TO SOAK! Its a total myth, in my honest opinion. The secret dry them off! Wet fries create steam, and steam doesnt allow for crunchy.

I also do not salt my french fries until they are out of the oven. In some vegetables salt draws the water out, and I just figured that it would do the same with potatoes. Is it true? Who knows! Im not gonna find out.

Dont overlap them when baking. Make sure to lay them out, not touching would even be better.

The Many Ways To Cook A French Fry

I fully recommend cooking french fries

  • In the oven
  • Using a frying pan on the stove top
  • In an air fryer

But I do not recommend trying to cook frozen fries in the microwave. They turn out mushy every single time (unless you have the ones that come in a special package and are specifically formulated for cooking in the microwave.

Making Homemade Steak Fries From Scratch

If you have time, you can also make air fryer steak fries from scratch. The directions and cooking times are very similar to our traditional air fryer Homemade Potato Wedges, or our Seasoned French Fries. You will begin with by peeling, then rinsing four Russet potatoes. Then, cut them into ½ inch strips the length of the potatoes.

Soak the French fries in cold water for 25-30 minutes. This will remove the starch content and make them crispy.

After they have soaked, drain water and pat dry with paper towels, then return them to the bowl. Next, coat potatoes with a tablespoon virgin olive oil. Seasonings are optional, but if you want them seasoned, follow our potato wedges recipe. We just season with salt or garlic powder.

Spread the fries into the air fryer basket, without overlapping. Work in batches if necessary. Once it is filled, return the basket to the air fryer and cook fries at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 20-25 minutes. During the cooking process, shake the basket at the 10 minute mark.

When cooking steak fries, depending on the thickness of your cut, cook time may vary, so you may need to add 2-3 extra minutes for cooking time.

Baked French Fries In The Oven

Ally

These Baked French Fries in the Oven are simple to make, ready in less than 30 minutes, and always crispy and crunchy.

I have always been the type to buy frozen french fries because of the sheer convenience. Who else is with me? They are ready to go, whether its into the fryer or the oven.

If they go into the oven, you have to be mindful of the time, and give at least 28 to 30 minutes, if you want perfectly crispy fries. Also, at some point during their bake time, you gotta flip them.

However, one afternoon when I was getting dinner ready, I opened the freezer to grab my favorite frozen fries, and apparently I didnt have any.

Maybe I miss planned when meal planning. Or perhaps I used them on a whim one night and made something off the weekly menu. Either way, we needed french fries.

I didnt have time to go to the store before cooking, so I set a timer for 5 minutes, and had 6 potatoes peeled, sliced and on a foiled pan, seasoned and ready for the oven.

Once baked up, Kelsie said I should never buy french fries again, and that she would help peel if I wanted from now on!

How Long Should You Cook Fries In The Air Fryer

Toss the fries with the oil in a medium bowl, then sprinkle with 1/2 teaspoon salt and several grinds of pepper. Working in batches if necessary, put the fries in an even layer in the air fryer basket with no overlapping and cook, turning them halfway through, until golden brown and crisp, 14 to 16 minutes.

Add Herbs And Spices For Extra Flavor

You don’t have to rely on plain salt to add flavor to your fries. Try raiding your spice drawer for quick and easy seasonings.

“Add a bit of gourmet flair to your fries by sprinkling them with some garlic powder, fresh rosemary, seasoned salt, or fresh virgin-olive or truffle oil,” Koeppe said.

As well as adding flavor, a drizzle of oil can also help keep fries from sticking together in the oven.

Not Preheating The Sheet Pan Prior To Adding The Fries

Chicken-Fried Steak With Cream Recipe / Miniature Chicken-Fried Steak Recipe / Miniature Cooking

While oven-cooked fries might thrive on a rack placed in the sheet pan, or directly on the rack in the oven with a sheet at the bottom to catch any drippings, there is another hack for trying to achieve maximum fry crispiness directly on the sheet pan, no rack required. A pan that’s piping hot prior to the fries being added to it can deliver some seriously tasty fried potatoes.

The New York Times says that by preheating the pan before you put the frozen fries on it, you are more likely to guarantee the fries developed a seared, crunchy outer layer that doesn’t require any actual frying on your part. Tossing the potatoes halfway through the cooking time is still necessary to get an even cooking if you go this route. Just be sure to never underestimate the power of a very hot pan .

I used a 28 ounce bag of frozen fries, and cooked them in two batches. I didn’t use cooking spray, because I have a nonstick basket and the fries didn’t stick at all.

Place the fries in the basket, without stacking or overlapping. Cook the fries at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 12 minutes. Shake the basket halfway through cooking. Depending on the air fryer, the actual cooking time may vary.

This Is How You Can Get Crisper Fries At Home

But the biggest change you need to make for extra-crispy French fries at home is by adding one simple piece of equipment you likely already have at home. Epicurious suggests that people start placing a wire cooling rack inside the baking tray you plan to cook the french fries on. But if you’re someone who religiously uses aluminum foil to line trays for quick and easy clean-up, don’t worry. You can still do that and just place the rack on top of the foil-lined tray.

Using this method lifts the frozen French fries off of the baking tray and allows them the room they need so that the bottom does not steam. When the fries cook in direct contact with the tray, the heat can cause the frozen fries to steam which ultimately turns them soggy. So, try this hack for the best homemade fries you’ve ever had. Who knows, your homemade fries may even be able to compete with the best fries in fast food.

Tips For Making Crispy Oven Baked Steak Fries

Once you have your ingredients ready to go, heres how to ensure your oven baked fries turn out perfectly crispy.

1) Soak the cut potatoes in a bowl of water for 30 minutes or more. Then, drain and rinse them. This removes some of the starch from the potatoes.

2) Dry the potatoes really well using a dish towel or paper towels.

3) Season with our secret ingredient in this recipe! Believe it or not, just a little bit of sugar in the seasoning mix helps the potatoes to caramelize in the oven and produces delicious flavor. Be sure to season these fries well before they go in the oven and after .

4)Make sure the potato wedges dont touch or over lap so they can get nice and crispy on both sides. Be sure to flip them halfway through the cook time. Ive found that using parchment paper underneath makes for much easier flipping and clean up.

Can These Be Made Into Curly Fries Or Shoestring Potatoes

Yes. Curly fries can be made following the recipe as written.

For shoestring fries you will need to significantly reduce the cooking time. Bake for 10 minutes at 350° F and start checking them every 5 minutes when you increase the oven temp to 450°. Keep baking until the fries turn golden brown and are tender. Watch them carefully so they dont burn.

Yes, you can cook frozen steak fries from frozen in the air fryer. They are fantastic and have an amazing crispy texture to them.

Though they are not as easy to air fry compared to regular air fryer frozen French fries because they are parboiled and frozen with less oil and need more effort making with them.
