    Ingredients For Pepper Steak Sauce

Soy sauce: If possible, use low sodium to control the amount of salt in the pepper steak recipe.

Cornstarch: I prefer cornstarch to thicken the sauce, but you can also use flour. When using flour, keep the ratio the same as when using cornstarch.

Sugar: Brown sugar will enhance the flavor, but you can substitute it with white sugar or honey.

Water: This helps the sauce reach the right consistency.

Onion, garlic, and ginger powder: These spices add a beautiful layer of flavor to the sauce and make this dish what it truly is.

How To Make Salisbury Steak From Scratch

    Classic Chinese Pepper Steak

The first step to making salisbury steak is to form the patties. The patties are seasoned with spices and mixed with breadcrumbs. I use 90% lean ground beef for this recipe, I wouldnt recommend going any leaner than that as your patties might come out dry. The salisbury steaks do need to be browned before they hit the slow cooker. I typically just brown them in the morning while Im making breakfast for the family and then Im good to go. Or, if you have a multi-cooker, you can use the sauté function.

The salisbury steaks are placed in the slow cooker along with mushrooms, onions and McCormick Simply Better Beef Gravy. I love this gravy, it tastes like homemade but is way more convenient than making it yourself. The Simply Better gravies come in multiple flavors, the turkey variety will definitely be on my holiday table. Plus it has no added MSG and is completely gluten-free!

When you add the gravy and a little beef broth to the slow cooker, it might seem like theres not enough liquid in the pot. Dont worry, the meat and vegetables will also release liquids as they cook, and by the time the cook time has elapsed, the patties will be mostly submerged in delicious sauce. I add a little cornstarch at the very end to thicken the sauce mixture, then dinner is served!

What Can I Use Instead Of A Wok

You can definitely make this dish in a frying pan. Woks are a great tool in the kitchen for stir fry style dishes and for cooking mixed vegetables. If you dont have one, dont skip the meal, but consider trying a wok some timeyou will probably love it!

PRO TIP: Woks need to be seasoned just like a cast iron pan needs seasoning. It should come with a set of instructions on how to do so. It should go something like first, boil water in the wok. Rinse it off and coat it in oil then heat it up. Repeat the oil and heat several times. You also dont wash it with soap. Let salt and heat do all the germ killing.
