Choose The Right Steak

Kansas City Steak (8) 6-oz Top Sirloin Steaks with Seasoning on QVC

When you are picking out a sirloin steak, make sure to choose one that is at least 1 inch thick. It will make sure that the steak is juicy and tender. For the best flavor, choose a steak that has been well-marbled. This means that it has streaks of fat running through it. The fat will flavor the steak and keep it moist as it cooks.

Foodthis Is The Best Way To Cook Steak From Rare Or Well

Only flip the steak once or the meat will dry out: False! Don’t fear the flip. Flipping the meat will not affect whether or not your steak is dry. Again, it’s all about the technique: Cooking your steak properly to the desired temperature will result in a juicy steak. Flipping and rotating the steak will allow you to control which part of the steak is getting the most heat. If one side of the steak is cooking faster than the other, flip!

Use the “finger test” to judge if a steak is done: This is partially false. Hear me out: This can be a good way to get a feel for the doneness of the steak, but given that everyone has different hands, it’s not as universally accurate as a thermometer.

Complement Your Meats With The Right Seasoning

Seasonings are incredibly easy to make yourself. You just need to know what kinds of herbs and spices pair best with your meat of choice. For example, warmer and lighter herbs and spices like rosemary, sage, cloves, cinnamon, and allspice pair well with the natural sweetness of pork. When seasoning chicken, you can hardly go wrong with any herb or spice since the chicken has such a mild flavor. You can try anything from bay leaves to thyme or basil to curry powder. Bright herbs such as dill, chives, parsley, and marjoram go really well with fish. You also can’t go wrong when breading fish with cornmeal and a little cayenne. Beef needs more robust herbs and spices such as cumin, oregano, cayenne, or chili powder in order to stand up against its intense meaty flavor. Those same robust herbs and spices will also complement most varieties of game meats well.

Today well be focusing on how to season steak for grilling. Although you can never go wrong with just salt and pepper, there are so many other more exciting ways to season your steak. Forgo the preblended bottles in the grocery store, and take full control of your flavors by mixing up your very own homemade steak seasoning.

Adding Salt Right Before Grilling Steak Vs Seasoning Several Minutes Prior To Grilling

Easy Marinated Sirloin Steak Recipe

When youre making grilled steak, should you salt and season the steak right before placing it on the grill or allow the seasoning to sit on the steak for 15 to 30 minutes? We get this question a lot and its a highly debated one in the steak world.

First, a little background on the science of salting a steak:

  • You salt the steak.
  • The salt begins to draw moisture out of the steak.
  • The mixture of salt and moisture creates a brine.
  • After a while, the meat reabsorbs that brine, pulling the moisture back into the steak.
  • The whole process from salting to reabsorption takes around 40-45 minutes. And you want the steak to pull that moisture back in before cooking so its not dried out. Therefore, the optimal amount of time to give your steak after seasoning and before cooking it on the grill is 40-45 minutes. Many recipes do call for about 15-30 minutes to help you save some time. And you still can get a juicy steak by doing this. But if you want the best results, wait the full time.

Alternatively, if youre pressed on time, you can season immediately before grilling steak. The salt wont have time to pull out steak juices, so all the natural juices will stay inside while you grill. Just be sure to get a sear quickly to help hold them in.

    Kalbi Korean Steak Seasoning

Give your steak some Asian-spiced flair by creating a kalbi steak marinade. In a large bowl, combine a quarter cup soy sauce with three tablespoons white sugar, two tablespoons sesame oil, one tablespoon each mincedgarlic and sesame seeds, two chopped green onions and a teaspoon groundblack pepper. Marinate the steaks in the refrigerator for two hours before cooking.

    How To Grill Sirloin Steaks

Once the steaks are marinated, I highly recommend cooking them on a grill for the best flavor. To grill the perfect sirloin steak, follow these simple steps.

  • Heat a grill over medium high heat, between 350-400 degrees Fahrenheit. Wait until the grill is hot before adding the steaks, to give them perfect sear marks.
  • Remove the steaks from the marinade and discard the marinade. Add the steaks to a hot grill.
  • For a perfect medium rare steak, grill a 1 inch thick steak for 4-5 minutes per side. For a steak that is 1 1/2 inches thick, add 1-2 minutes to the cooking time per side.
  • Insert an instant read thermometer into the steak. Remove the steak once it reads 130°F for a medium rare steak. For a medium steak, wait until it reaches 140°F and for a medium well steak, wait until it reaches 150°F.
  • Quick tip! A steak will rise approximately 5 degrees after you remove it from the grill and let it rest.
  • Remove the steak from the grill and let it rest for 5-10 minutes. This ensures that the juices redistribute throughout the steak, leaving you with the most juicy steak!
  • Sprinkle coarse kosher salt or sea salt flakes over the steak and optionally garnish with fresh chopped parsley before serving.

    How To Grill Sirloin Steak

Sirloin steak comes from a non-exercised area of a cow, up near the back portion of the animal. This cut is nice and tender when cooked, but most fans really love it for its bold, beefy flavor. The grill seems to pull out those natural flavors the best, combining them with the tell-tale smoky taste of a barbecue.

How To Season Steak The Right Way

Ready to make the perfect steak with just the right amount of steak seasoning? Here are some tips to help you:

    • Avoid using table salt to season. Instead, choose a Kosher salt with thick granules, which will help you really get the salt flavor in every bite.
    • To help your seasonings adhere to the steaks surface, you can brush all sides with a small amount of olive oil first.
    • Season steak generously, especially with thicker steaks. Youll want to have the flavor in every bite, and since only the outside gets seasoned, it needs to be enough to achieve that flavor.
    • Season your steak just before cooking or about 30-40 minutes before cooking not in between to assist the science that happens when you cook a steak with salt .

When To Put Dry Rub On A Steak:

You can apply the Texas Roadhouse steak rub at two different times. It all depends on what works for you and your family.

    • Apply about 45 minutes before grilling About 45 minutes from when you are about to grilling your steaks, apply the steak seasoning on the steak. The seasoning absorbs into the steak making it very tender and flavorful.
    • Apply the dry seasoning the night before you are grilling the steaks and place them in the refrigerator. Your steak may seem dry in the morning, but it did not lose much moisture.

Hot To Make Spice Rubbed Sirloin:

    1. In a small bowl, mix together paprika, brown sugar, chili powder, garlic powder, cayenne pepper and salt.

    2. Rub spice mixture on all sides of the steak.

    3. Refrigerate steak for 20-30 minutes.

    4. Pre-Heat BBQ Grill to medium/high.

    5. If your grill has a searing section, sear the steak for about 1 minute each side.

    6. Transfer to the regular grill rack and grill about 4-5 minutes on each side over medium/high heat with the lid closed. This should end up medium to medium/well doneness.

    7. Place finished steak on a platter and cover with foil. Let it stand for 5 minutes.

    8. Cut steak across the grain into thin slices and serve with A1 Steak Sauce.

Notes: Costco has the best top sirloin and the best prices too, especially if you need alot for a party. I usually cut those in half because they are such thick steaks.

    How To Melt The Cheese

Cheez Whiz already has a gooey, sauce-like consistency which makes it the perfect Philly cheesesteak sauce. If youre using that then you only really need to pour it on top of the meat and toppings as a final step.

If youre using other types such as provolone or American cheese, add the slices on top of the meat once itâs almost cooked in the pan. Essentially what youre doing is covering the meat with the cheese slices so that the cheese melts on top.

    When To Salt The Steak

    Yummy Sirloin Steak Marinade

When to apply the salt is a common seasoning question. Some chefs like to salt a steak well in advance of cooking, even up to 24 hours in advance. Others say salting it right before cooking is best. The main drawback of seasoning in advance is that salt applied to the outside of something tends to pull water from the center of it onto the surface. If the thing in question happens to be a steak, it will necessarily be less juicy. In fact, any steak you hold in the fridge, salt or no salt, is going to lose juices overnight.

Another drawback is that it extends your prep time. Seasoning your steaks 24 hours in advance of cooking, means you’re in the kitchen 24 hours before dinner working with the steaks. You also need to make room in your fridge for these steaks for an additional 24 hours.

Do you want a restaurant-type steak at home? Steak seasonings that are sold in stores are prepared in gourmet style so that you can have the restaurant taste at home. The seasoning not only enhances the taste of steaks but also of other dishes too. The store-bought steak seasoning reduces a lot of work collecting herbs and blending them to create a mouthwatering steak.

Though the ready-made steaks might not be as aromatic as a freshly ground spice, it is helpful for those who have busy schedules. It can be hard to decide on one particular seasoning but the best store bought steak seasoning would be one that can be used for variable purposes.

    Best Pick

The Pappy’s Fine Foods Seasonings is our best pick on our list as this seasoning is prepared for gourmet meat preparation. Garlic, salt, spice, and paprika creates a flavor that doesn’t require any use of MSG or additives. The sugar content is low, which makes it suitable to eat for diabetic patients.

    Budget Pick

Can You Use This Marinade On Other Steaks

Yes! Because this marinade contains vinegar, which is a steak tenderizer, you can use it to tenderize and flavor any of your favorite cuts of steak. I do not recommend marinating an already tender cut, like a filet mignon.

For more tender steaks, like the sirloin pictured throughout this post, a ribeye or New York steak, I recommend a quick marinade between 20 minutes and 2 hours. For a tougher cut of steak, like a flank or strip steak, I recommend marinating for 4-8 hours.

Try the marinade with any of these cuts of steak.
