Dry Steak Rub For The Grill Or Grill Pan

How to season a steak with dry rub

Published: by Shelby Law Ruttan

This Dry Steak Rub is a delicious blend of brown sugar and spices that lends a great umami flavor to steak. It is a delicious rub that is great for cooking on the grill or grill pan.

Making a homemade steak rub is one of the easiest ways to season your favorite cut of beef. It is as simple as pulling out your favorite blend of spices, mixing it together, and rubbing it over the steak before grilling.

This post is sponsored by the New York Beef Council, all opinions are my own.

How To Grill Steak:

-Get the highest quality meat that you can afford- it will make all the difference. Filet Mignon, Porterhouse, N.Y. Strip, & Ribeye are all perfect for grilling. Visit here for a complete list of options!

-Contrary to popular belief, its best not to oil your grill grates before grilling. These guys can tell you why.

Hot & Fast is the best way to cook a steak on the grill, so dont be afraid to turn up that heat. This goes for all cooking levels, from rare to well done.

-Cook the steak for 4-5 minutes on the first side, then flip. It should be brown and charred. Then follow the cooking times below depending on how you like it cooked:

  • Rare: 5
  • Well Done: 10

Don’t Use Old Herbs And Spices

Old herbs and spices mean less flavor. And for this spice blend, we definitely want newer dried herbs and spices!

Dried spices and herbs have a shelf life of about two years when properly stored, depending on the spice or herb. To test potency, crumble some of the herb or spice into the palm of your hand with your fingers. If you can barely smell it or its dusty smelling, its time to get some new stuff!

Pro tip: Use an airtight glass jar to mix the ingredients together and youll save on cleanup!

What Does Kosher Salt Do

And for the food nerdy, like me: The Kosher Salt will draw some of the moisture out of your steak. So dont be surprised, when you unwrap your steak, you will notice that there is a lot of moisture in the plastic wrap!

That is what Kosher salt does! That is the way it is supposed to be. NO WORRIES, It will be juicy and moist once cooked.

Thats where a good rub comes in. That extra boost of flavor can transform a good steak into possibly one of the BEST steaks youve ever had.

The Best Rubs You Can Buy For Grilled Steak Chicken Pork And Fish

These are the best dry rubs money can buy for barbecue season.

The secret to expertly seasoned meat, fish or veggies is actually stupidly easy: Don’t even think about letting anything touch the grill this summer without giving it a good rub down first. Dry rubs are a great way to add flavor to anything you grill, and these are some of the best rubs you can buy.

A dry rub usually has these three ingredients: salt, pepper and brown sugar, which gives meat and fish a healthy dose of flavor and some sweet caramelization when it hits the heat. But once you’ve got those as your base, you can go crazy, adding whatever spices make sense with the natural flavor of what you’re cooking.

But don’t stress if you’re not a flavor chemist: Each of these ready-to-buy rubs is a delicious flavor bomb that’ll add texture, too, without you having to lift a finger. Some of them even skip the sugar , but bring all of that crazy-good taste. Break one out for Memorial Day, and experiment with other blends all summer long. Another bonus: Unlike a or sauce, you can add a rub right before you cook the meat, making them a godsend for any impromptu grilling sesh!

How Long Do You Leave Dry Rub On Steak

You can leave rub on a steak for as little as 30-40 minutes or as long as overnight. Leaving it on overnight will really allow those flavors to soak into the steak. If you are leaving it on overnight simply place the steak in a airtight container and leave in the fridge overnight.

How To Make Steakhouse Steaks At Home

There are a couple of things that set high-end steakhouses above the rest: prime cuts of beef, a broiler that can reach up to 1800 degrees, maitre dhotel butter and a spice rub.

And yes, most steakhouses use a broiler, not a grill, so throw that the notion that all delicious steaks need a flame right out the window.

While most of us wont ever have an oven that reaches 1800 degrees, we can purchase a perfectly marbled steak and prepare maitre dhotel butter and steak rub, both being relatively simple.

And the last trick is a juicy steak and to make that happen you need to LET IT REST!

Of course, Ribeyes are awesome, but a breakfast steak cut would work for this as well. For this rub, avoid the sirloins and other low fat content steaks.

Yep, the bitter grounds, when mixed with roasted garlic, smoked paprika, brown sugar, salt and dried orange peel makes a sweet treat with smoky flavor on the grill.

Choosing Steaks And Making The Rub

  • 1Choose 34 inch thick cut steaks. The flavor of very thin steaks can easily be overwhelmed by a dry rub. Choose steaks that are at least 34 inch thick. Look for cuts of steak that are well marbled with little or no connective tissue. Great choices are ribeye steaks, t-bone steaks, New York strip steak, and sirloin steaks.XResearch source
  • Thicker steaks may take longer to cook.
  • 2Put your dry rub ingredients in a container that can be sealed with a lid. Pour all of your dry rub ingredients into a container. Dry Steak Rub Inspiration

Recently I participated in a Virtual Steak Night with the New York Beef Council where I connected with two chefs who taught us two ways to cook steak on the grill or skillet. We were provided with a rub recipe and cooked along. I decided to go with the grilled version because that is our favorite way to eat steak.

I discovered that it was really easy to come up with your own seasoning and control the flavors and salt content and make a seasoning of your very own with spices you currently have in your pantry. That is the method I took with creating the dry steak rub that I am sharing with you today!

    How To Use Steak Rub

Favorite Dry Rub for Steaks I like to play with my food.

Learning how to use dry rubs is a great skill to learn for anyone who loves to BBQ. This rub is fantastic on a steak, but dont stop there. You can use this on burgers, ribs, or in a meatloaf. Ive even tossed chicken wings in this mixture and they were delicious.

This is a dry rub, not a dry brine. The purpose is to flavor the outside of the meat.

An Obvious Secret About Beef Rubs

NEVER Buy Steak Rub or Dry Rub at the Store!

It probably goes without saying that youll get better results from your rubs if you use the freshest ingredients possible.

We recommend buying from local specialty spice shops whenever possible. Spices from the grocery store can also work, but sometimes grocery store spices arent as fresh and therefore dont have the same flavor profile
