How much you are paying for your Tomahawk Steaks depends on the quality of the beef you are buying and who you are getting it from.

However, you should expect to pay up to three times more than your normal bone-in Ribeye.

The Chicago Steak Company is selling two USDA Prime dry-aged Tomahawk Ribeyes for $239.95 when you can get four USDA Prime dry-aged Bone-in Ribeyes for $274.95.

DeBragga will sell you a pair of dry-aged Prime Tomahawk steaks for $285.00, which is more than their Culinary Olympics winning 24oz Miyazaki Wagyu Ribeye.

While it might seem like that is a reasonable increase when you are moving from a 24-ounce Ribeye to a 40-ounce Tomahawk, it is essential to bear in mind that a lot of that weight is going to be bone and not meat.

You can expect to spend an average of about $100 on a quality Tomahawk Steak, and the reality is that around $50 to $80 of that is paying for a considerable length of bone and a more Instagram ready steak.

Tomahawk Steaks are cut thick, so you can expect a piece of beef around 2 inches in thickness and weighing between 2 and 3 pounds!

    Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse typically sells its bone-in ribeye for about $54, easily feeding at least two patrons. If you go for their Tomahawk ribeye, though, you’re looking to spend $119 for that bad boy.

    Lock and Key in Downey, California does it right, as the ounce gap between their bone-in ribeye and monstrous tomahawk at least feels like you’re getting your money’s worth. Their 18-ounce ribeye goes for about $55, while their 40-ounce tomahawk more than doubles the ounces for $99. There is a good chance that about 10 to 15 of those ounces are bone, though.

    Ok, so we won’t completely bash the tomahawk. You are getting a little bit more meat on the tomahawk, but you are absolutely not getting double the meat. If you were, it would be worth the doubled mark-up price, so as it stands, you’re paying for that bone, baby.

    Of course, some of the best things about eating at a good restaurant is the pageantry, presentation, and overall feeling of joy that comes from a dish, but the casual diner probably doesn’t think about a tomahawk ribeye and a regular ribeye being the exact same cut of beef.

    I have a local grocer that routinely carries this cut and they charge around $16 per pound for a Choice grade tomahawk steak. I can buy a regular Choice grade ribeye steak at this same store for $12 a pound. This means that I am paying a $4 per pound premium for a steak just because it has a giant bone attached.

    Beef prices fluctuate all the time so a general rule to remember is that a tomahawk will typically cost about 30% more than the equivalent ribeye on a per pound basis.

    Another consideration with the cost of a tomahawk is that it is a much larger steak than your typical ribeye. The whole point of a tomahawk is that you want to have a MASSIVE piece of meat hanging off of a MASSIVE bone.

    Typically a tomahawk steak will weigh between 3 and 4 pounds compared to 1 pound for what is typically considered a large ribeye steak.

    The combination of an increased cost per pound with the massive weight means you should expect a single tomahawk steak to cost at least $50.

    Costco is often your best bet to get a tomahawk if you want one right away, but if you want something truly special, Im a big fan of Snake River Farms American Wagyu Tomahawk.

    Of course, the best place to buy any meat, if you still have one in your community, is your local butcher. Period. All of the best steaks Ive ever had came from local shops no matter where in the world I was. They may need a few days to get it ready or order it in, but its the best option.

Ive had a lot of it and it can definitely range in quality from ordinary to amazing. Its a good signifier of quality thats come a long way from the 90s lies of Kobe beef everything.

    USDA Prime and Certified Angus are both easily as good, if not better, so theres no need to hunt any specific cow down. With any steak, even and consistent marbling is often a great sign of how good that steak will be. Grass fed is better than Grain or Corn fed/finished, as well, in my opinion.

    How To Cook A Tomahawk Steak

    When it comes to preparing a Tomahawk Steak, the challenge is its sheer size.

    The steak is about 2 inches thick, which means traditional searing methods are going to leave you with either a cold center or a charcoal black surface.

    I typically buy Choice grade steaks but sometimes I can find a Prime grade tomahawk at my local Costco for about $20 per pound.
