There are a few factors to blame for increased meat prices, two of which are COVID and inflation. Meat production plants shut down during COVID. And because production slowed, ranchers had nowhere to send their beef, and many had to scale back their beef production big time.
The labor shortage issues exacerbated everything and created a huge imbalance. Once the demand for meat started to rise, there became a supply and demand issue that skyrocketed the price of meat.

How To Reheat Ny Strip:
Ever since I discovered this reheating method for reverse sear steak, I actually use it for all my steaks, including this New York strip recipe:
- Preheat the oven to a low temperature, such as 250 or 300 degrees F.
- Place the steaks in a baking dish and add a little broth to the bottom . Seal the top with foil.
- Heat in the oven for about 10 minutes, or until warm.

The nations meat production capacity had been hampered by Covid plants closing down as a result of the 2020 plant closures. This affected the beef market in the coming years. Due to the slowdown, the farmers did not have the means to truck their beef, leading to them having to ing their beef, which resulted in them having to cull cattle and other livestock.

New York Strip Steak Basics
The New York strip is cut from the same muscle than runs along the rear end of the rib section, commonly referred to as the loin. The meat has a tighter texture and has less fat throughout than the ribeye. There is typically a tough band of fat that rests along one side of the steak.
While this cut is slightly chewier than the ribeye, it is still very tasty. NY strip typically costs between $9.00 and $15.00 per pound for USDA choice. Grass fed and organic portions will run a few dollars more.
The strip is a healthier steak when considering the fat content. That may be the tradeoff for less flavor and moisture. A 3 ounce serving of NY strip has 2.3 grams of saturated fat. There are 160 calories and 25 grams of protein.
Pro Tip #2: The New York strip is often sold under the names shell steak, Kansas City steak, or country club steak.
What Is A Good Price For A New York Strip Steak
You can expect to pay around $12.99 to $14.99 a pound for a New York Strip steak. This is about the same price as a good Ribeye as well. If you shop sales I bet you can beat that. Grocery store typically have some type of steak on sale each week, especially during the summer months.
Walmart had the cheapest New York Strip steaks. But I dont feel very confident with the quality of those steaks. I would rather wait on a sale at another grocery store that could match Walmarts everyday price.
If you want to be really ambitious and cut your own strip steaks, then you might consider buying a whole one from Costco. You can even get them as USDA Prime. How about that?

- Chicken prices at Walmart have seen an increase of about 38%. In 2021 we saw prices a little over $2 per pound. Now prices are at $3.24 per pound.
- Ground beef has seen a nearly $1.70 price increase at Walmart. A 1-pound pack of lean ground beef will cost you 30% more at $5.62 today.
- Expect to pay more for steak at Walmart. In 2021 the price for a NY Strip Steak was $11.97 per pound. Now you can expect to pay $12.47 per pound, a 4.17% increase.
Walmart Tries Again To Improve Beef Offering In Stores

Walmart has over the years made several attempts to improve the beef quality it sells. Last week, the retail giant invested a minority stake in Sustainable Beef, a rancher and beef producer-owned company that sells Angus beef into retail.
Walmart did not disclose the amount of the investment but said the deal will increase the amount of quality Angus beef it sells.
Fresh groceries are a growth driver for the retailer, said Tyler Lehr, senior vice president of merchandising for deli services, meat and seafood for Walmart U.S.
The deal calls for Sustainable Beef to open a processing center in North Platte, Neb. They will break ground next month and create about 800 jobs in that community. Lehr said Walmart will get a majority of the beef produced at the new facility which is expected to open in late 2024. With the investment, Walmart also gets a board seat at Sustainable Beef.
Walmart said the deal will allow for a more consistent supply of beef, including better cuts such as rib-eye and New York Strip. The beef sourced from Sustainable is expected to make its way into stores in the central U.S. by late next year.

Winco Chicken Beef And Steak Prices Have All Increased 25% To 57%
- Winco chicken prices have increased to $1.97 or 25% per pound since 2020.
- Pay $5.18 for one pound of ground beef at Winco, a 62% increase from 2020 prices.
