Steak N Shakes Change In Management
Experts point to a decline in the quality of service and food, starting in 2008, as the main culprit for the chains declining popularity. This was the same year that new owner, Biglari Holdings Inc., took over the company and implemented some major changes to Steak n Shakes operational model.
CEO Sardar Biglari had a fresh vision for the way Steak n Shake should operate: with high efficiency and low margins. As YouTuber Company Man explains, Biglari essentially wanted to sell more burgers for cheaper, where speed of service would be key in feeding the masses with not great, but good enough, burgers and shakes.
In order to achieve this, Steak n Shakes menu was pared down to the basicsburgers, fries, sodas, and shakesand its prices dropped to a uniform low across all locations. While sales started to rise for a while, they started slipping again in 2016.

the food is delicious if you can get it. Two nights in a row theyve forgotten an item or two. Ive gotten all the way home and now I have to go back to get the chicken fingers they forgot to give us for my son. Not really happy right now. but the crews very nice. Edit: Have revisited because theres nothing like their Burgers ? and shakes! Doing a lot better now. Prob were short of staff before. Always check the bag now!
Went to the Goshen Steak n Shake, employees there were very pleasant and helpful. Received my order quickly and it was the greatest tasting burger that Ive had in a long time. The manager handed me my order and also told me to have a great day and enjoy. Such a super nice fellow and I did indeed enjoy every bite!!

Gift Card Payment Wont Submit
I Have tried to order multiple times on the app and went to check out with a gift card and when I go to submit the order it says sorry something went wrong. I also tried to order milkshakes for delivery with my gift card online and when I clicked to submit the order it says Something Is Wrong Were sorry. The gift card number you entered is either invalid or restricted to dine-in purchases only. My gift cards are not invalid as the guy at the window the other day swiped them and had no issues swiping it to pay. I have never heard of a gift card thats not able to be used for a mobile order before.Not sure why I cant seem to place any mobile or online orders and pay with either of my gift cards but its very stressful when I am at the restaurant and unable to place the order to do curbside and have to wait in the drive through. The old app used to work way better.

The Chain Has An Identity Crisis
Steak n Shake is a confusing place for some. Its a fast-food chain with a drive-thru, but also has table service. In the end, it doesnt seem to be satisfying its customers on either front.

Belt expanded his business around the greater Illinois area and kept the company cooking for 20 years. He didn’t live long enough to see it fully expand though he died of a heart ailment at age 59, just outside of St. Louis. The company went to his wife Edith, and she kept things afloat for 15 more years before selling the 50 or so Steak ‘n Shakes to a company called Longchamps in 1969. Two years later, Franklin Corporation gobbled up the chain. They expanded the company even further, and by 1975 Steak ‘n Shake had 130 locations.
In 1981 E.W. Kelley and associates purchased Steak ‘n Shake. They took a look at the history of the company and brought it back to its roots more or less. The chain took on more of Belt’s original concept a sit-down diner with fresh-cooked meals. You can make the case that it was the constant franchise turnover that expanded the growth everyone who bought the chain tried to make it bigger and there’s no telling where Steak ‘n Shake would have gone if it remained family-owned and just in the Midwest.

In 2019, Steak n Shake came face to face with the reality that its slow. He added that To be a market leader in the fast food business, we should have paid greater heed to becoming, well, fast.
Turtle-like speeds at a fast food restaurant means plenty of complaints. One employee on Reddit said that were not technically fast food, and if you want fast food, dont go to Steak n Shake. Another noted that their general manager went with the notion that Steak n Shake is primarily a restaurant first with a drive-thru second.
