A Note On Making Steak For Philly Pizza

Philly Cheese Steak Pizza Recipe | Episode 361

Leftover, refrigerated steak is perfect for this recipe because chilled steak is easy to slice.

For replicating the classic Philly steak seasoning taste, marinate your favorite steak recipe in worcestershire sauce with a sprinkle of red pepper flakes. Or just use a little salt and pepper to sear or grill an 8 oz steak to medium rare like I did in the coulotte steak recipe in the tutorial photos.

If youre wondering how to cook steak for pizza recipes, dont forget: the steak will continue cooking in the oven. So even if you prefer a more well done steak, I suggest cooking it on the rare side.

Can I Make This Ahead Of Time And Freeze For Later

Of course, you can make it into a homemade frozen pizza! In fact, when I have extra pizza crust on hand after finding it on sale, I love making up some homemade pizzas to wrap and pop into the freezer for later.

These are best prepared and baked when ready to serve. Simply prepare until you are at the step of adding to the oven to bake. Wrap the pizza in plastic wrap covering it completely, and then store flat on a shelf in your freezer for up to three months. When ready, pop into the oven at the same temperature and cook for a few minutes longer to heat through and melt the cheese.

Make The White Sauce For Cheesesteak Pizza From Scratch

Even if youve never made a cheese sauce for pizza, you can pull this one off. Its really simple and takes only about 10 minutes. See the recipe video at the bottom of this page if you want me to walk you through it.

  • Roast garlic. In a small pan on medium-low heat, add olive oil and garlic. Sauté garlic about 3 minutes until translucent, stirring regularly. Remove from heat before garlic browns. Set aside.
  • Heat butter with flour. Add butter to a small sauce pan on medium heat. Once butter melts, add flour by whisking it in slowly so it doesnt clump. Cook flour and milk for about 1 minute until it turns light brown and the air smells nutty.
  • Add milk to white pizza sauce. With the sauce pan on medium heat, slowly pour cold milk into the roux, whisking as it incorporates. Turn the heat of the burner to high, and once the milk bubbles , reduce the heat to medium. Then add cooked garlic olive oil mixture to the roux. Continue to whisk ingredients as they bubble for 1 minute. Turn off the heat of the burner .
  • Add the rest of the white pizza sauce ingredients. Add seasonings to the mixture . Add parmesan cheese and whisk until combined and the sauce becomes smooth. Remove from the burner, stir in the fresh chopped parsley , and set aside while making the pizza . Or store in the refrigerator and reheat on low if making the pizza sauce more than 20 minutes in advance.

    Tips For Great Homemade Pizza

    • Take the time to make your own dough. My go-to is this no-knead pizza dough.
    • If you don’t want to make your own sauce, a store-bought alfredo will work.
    • Don’t go overboard on the sauce. You want to just spread it lightly.
    • Use a pizza stone so you can broil the pizza and get a nice crust, but bubbly top.

    How To Make This Pizza

    Fast Philly Cheesesteak Pizza Recipe

This pizza is incredibly easy to whip up the hardest part is just giving the dough enough time to rest!

  • Roll out and bake the dough. Leave the dough out for at least 30 minutes to reach room temperature. Alternate rolling out and resting the dough 2-3 times until its approximately the size of the baking sheet. Bake until 90% done and lightly golden brown.
  • Cook the steak. If it isnt already, slice the beef first. Then give it a quick sear. Dont cook it long long because itll continue to cook in the oven.
  • Caramelize the veggies. Cook to soften and brown first, and then season with salt and pepper. Continue cooking until tender and add in Worcestershire sauce.
  • Assemble and bake. Add the sauce, cheese, steak, and veggies on top of the pizza dough. Bake until everything is heated through and cheese has melted.

It Is A Great Comfort Food

Pizza is always great food and is considered as one of the most sought-after foods when someone wants to comfort or reward themselves.

It can make a person relax and full, of course. This pizza packs a lot of nutrition with the combination of protein from the meat and nutrients from the vegetables.

    What Is A Philly Cheesesteak

Before we show you how to make the best Philly cheesesteak pizza thats just like Dominos, well show you why the restaurant even decided to make a cheesesteak-themed pizza in the first place.

A Philly cheesesteak is a type of sandwich thats now a local delicacy in where it first originated from. Hence its name Philly, which is short for Philadelphia. This sandwich is made up of beef steak, caramelized onions, and melted cheese encased in a long bread, commonly a hoagie. Its a very meaty, cheesy, and, most of all, hearty sandwich. Theres a reason its so well-loved, after all.

Usually, Philly cheesesteak meat is either a thinly-sliced rib eye or top round steak cut. However, other cuts are also used, like the top sirloin . The cheeses youd find in this steak sandwich are either American cheese, provolone cheese, or even Cheez Whiz.

Some food establishments melt the American cheese and then add them to the sandwich for a more gooey eating experience. However, others simply let the heat of the steaks melt the slices of scrumptious American cheese. Also, while hoagie rolls are often used for this sandwich, some variations opt for French bread or the soft and slightly-salted Amoroso rolls. All these different ingredients and methods help give the iconic sandwich its signature taste.

Choosing your sauce is also a personal preference. So, you can use regular pizza sauce, alfredo sauce, or you can not use sauce at all.

However, I like to make it without any sauce, the provolone cheese provides enough moisture, and in combination with this delicious crust recipe, youll see how delicious a sauceless pizza can be.

    Dominos Ultimate Pepperoni Pizza

This specialty pizza faces the same identity problem as Wisconsin 6 Cheese. If you want a pepperoni pizza with lots of pepperoni , then why not just order extra pepperoni? If you order from the Dominos pizza builder, it costs $9.99 for a regular medium pepperoni pizza, and $11.99 for the same pizza but with double pepperoni. A medium Ultimate Pepperoni, on the other hand, costs $15.99, according to the price checking website Fast Food Menu Prices.

Dominos says it uses a blend of pork, beef, and spices in its pepperoni, and that the Ultimate Pepperoni is made with two layers of the meat to honor pepperonis top spot in the pizza universe. While its true that pepperoni is the most reliable classic topping and deserves respect as such, springing for a pie off of the specialty pizza menu thats just a pepperoni pizza with extra toppings is not going to turn any heads as an especially special order.

    What’s A Philly Cheesesteak

Philly cheesesteak sandwiches originated in – you guessed it – Philadelphia, PA. The famous sandwich was created in the 1930s’ and originally consisted of hot dog buns, chopped steak, and grilled onions. Today, when you think of a Philly Cheesesteak, it should have shaved beef, caramelized onions, and melty cheese on a toasted hoagie roll. Popular vegetable add-ons include red or green bellpepper and mushrooms.

    Dominos Wisconsin 6 Cheese Pizza

This is simply a cheese pizza by another name. Nothing against the purists who prefer cheese and nothing but cheese on their pizza, but the Wisconsin 6 Cheese doesnt bring much to the table other than lots and lots of its namesake. Its like a cheeseboard, but one where youre forced to eat every available cheese at once on a pizza crust with some tomato sauce.

Wisconsin 6 Cheese first came out in 2010 as part of the American Legends pizza line, and it was announced with a press release that assertively started with the statement, Cheeseheads Unite! It has mozzarella, feta, provolone, cheddar, Parmesan, and Asiago. All are great cheeses perfect for pizza, but the lack of an excitement factor is hard to get past. And then theres the issue of the name. All of these but cheddar are typically associated with Italy or Greece rather than Wisconsin. According to Forbes, Dominos and nearly every other big pizza chain gets its cheese from one company: Leprino Foods, which is headquartered in Denver, Colorado.

That all said, there is a time and a place for Wisconsin 6 Cheese. Namely, that time and place is either when youre with a group of extremely picky eaters, or when you have a bunch of toppings from home that you plan on adding to the top yourself.

You will preheat the oven and add your pizza crust to the baking sheet. Next, spread the cream cheese over the crust as the sauce.

Cook your steak and vegetables as directed, and then pour them over the prepared crust spreading into an even layer.

Top the pizza with provolone cheese, and bake as directed.

The serving size is 1 slice.

Helpful Tools For Making Cheesesteak Pizza

    • Pizza Stone: The crust begins cooking/searing immediately when dough is placed on the hot stone, which results in a beautify crispy crust on the bottom thats still soft and chewy in the middle AKA perfection.
    • Instant read thermometer: allows you to make sure the water is in that tight range of temperature needed to activate yeast. This way you know that if the yeast doesnt activate then its not the water its the yeast and you dont waste your time trying to get the water right. It also gives you the peace of mind that once the water is in the right range, youre guaranteed perfect pizza dough.
    • Stand mixer: I use my stand mixer because it saves time, elbow grease and it keeps my hands from getting gooey but its not 100% necessary the dough will just take a few more minutes and elbow grease without one.
    • Cheese grater: I use this kitchen tool constantly because FRESHLY grated cheese as opposed to bagged shredded cheese is always the way to go.
    • Cast iron skillet: A quality cast iron skillet is a must in your cooking arsenal! It is perfect for searing and creating a deeply golden exterior on everything from chicken, to roast, to pork and seamlessly transitions from the stove to the oven. I love my super high quality Staub and Le Creuset. You can also go with a more economical, trusty skillet like this one which also works very well but it will need to be seasoned and always rubbed with vegetable oil after using.

    How To Reheat Pizza

    Philly Cheesesteak Pizza Recipe

The best method for reheating pizza is in the oven. Preheat the oven to 425 and place your pizza on a baking sheet. You can line it with parchment paper for easier clean up if youd like. Once the oven is up to temp, cook the pizza in it for 8-10 minutes, until you can smell it.

The cheese should be almost bubbling and hot, even in the center, and the crust should stay nice and crispy.

    Can You Freeze Cheesesteak Pizza

Yes, you can freeze Philly Cheese Steak Pizza but be aware the bell peppers become a softer, funny texture. I recommend removing the bell pepper and mushrooms before freezing.

    To freeze:

  • Bake pizza according to directions.
  • Let pizza cool completely to room temperature.
  • Add pizza slices to a large freezer safe and lay flat to freeze or wrap entire pizza a few times in plastic wrap then in foil.
  • When ready to eat, bake at 450 degrees F for 20-25 minutes or until heated through.
