A Quick Note On Pellet Grills

The way a wood pellet grill works is by using small, wood pellets to keep food cooking consistently on the grill.

Where gas and charcoal grills simply burn with much less control over your temperature, a pellet grill can regulate itself and stay at a desired temperature as long as you need it to. Pellet grills are incredibly easy to use in this regard.

The pellets are stored in a hopper that releases more pellets when the temperature starts to fall so there is always the perfect amount of heat to cook your food.

Heres the thing though the way pellet grills actually cook your food is almost like how a convection oven works with indirect heat. The wood pellets are ignited in a firepot, then a fan circulates the hot air and smoke up into the cooking chamber cooking your food evenly and with plenty of flavor.

Create Dual Heat Zones If You Are Cooking On A Gas Grill

A gas grill with multiple burner elements allows you to develop two distinct and different heat zones. You can simply start by firing up one side of the grill at high temperature and the other one on medium or low. Once everything is done, place the steak onto the high heat side for about a minute and a half or two. After these two minutes, gently slide it over to the middle-low side for two to three minutes so you can ensure that the interior of the steak is warmed. When it is ready to flip, place it back on the high heat zone and repeat. This cooking method will ensure that your steak will have a nice crust with a medium / medium-rare interior.

Note that you might not be able to do that with a gas grill that features only one small burner!

Are Pellet Grills Healthier

5 Best Pellet Grill for Steaks

Potentially carcinogenic compounds are formed when muscle meats are cooked at high temperatures. These compounds have also been identified in the smoke from charcoal or wood.

There have been some claims pellet grills are a safer barbecuing option. The claim is that pellet grillers by design do not allow as much of this potentially dangerous smoke to come into contact with the food. The fact that pellet grills dont reach the same temperatures that other grillers do has also given rise to the idea that it is a safer barbecuing option.

However, for these claims to be verified a lot more in depth research needs to take place. In fact, Kristie Sullivan, a toxicologist at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine relates that these carcinogenic compounds can still be produced without visible char marks on the meat.

What Is The Perfect Temperature To Cook Steak On Pellet Grill

Knowing and following the required temperature will go a long way in achieving a concise and appreciated result without any regret of ever venturing on steak grilling.

For the searing crust method , at the initial preheating stage before placing your steak on the grill, your grill thermometer must read up to 3600F before you place your steaks on it.

This is because you need a sizzling hot grill grate to make the perfect sear on the steak.

For the reverse method, a preheat temperature of 1800 is required to set the grilling in motion. After about 15 minutes, take off the steaks and increase the grill temperature to 5000F till your steaks get done.

Note that you should keep your griller covered when preheating. This will help reach the targeted temperature faster than when left open.

What To Serve With Steak

Many side dishes pair great with steak. You can cook some potatoes, cheesy scalloped potatoes, garlic butter mushrooms, cauliflower, roasted Brussel sprouts, etc.

If youre enjoying the steak at home and are looking for a good wine to go with steak, consider Cabernets, Syrah, Zinfandel, or a good Malbec.

Traeger Grills Pro Series 34

The 4 Best Pellet Grills For Cooking and Smoking Perfect ...

The last on our list is the top-notch device from Traeger Grills that is famous for its precise temperature control and consistency of cooking results. The total cooking space on this unit is 884 square inches with enough options for a highly versatile cooking experience.

Moreover, an 18-pound hopper capacity is sufficient to handle high sears without continuous refilling of pellets.

Seamless Cooking

Unlike many others on the market, the Pro Series 34 offers a convenient hopper cleanout feature that enhances its desirability. For extensive cooking, you have to refill the hopper regardless of the brand of the grill.

However, only a few of them allow users to simultaneously change the pellets without turning the device off. In this way, you will be able to continue searing your steaks without the temperature dropping dramatically when the pellets are refilled.

The upgraded version of the standard Daniel Boone comes with Wi-Fi controls, which takes the pellet grill from a slightly hands-off grilling experience to a completely hands-off grilling experience. The Prime Plus also comes with handy quality of life improvements like a built-in rotisserie, collapsible front shelf and the perhaps the best sleeper grill feature there is: an under-hood light. Its motor and pellet-efficiency is better, too. If you’re struggling to decide between the two, consider how often you might expect to use the grill. If the answer is less than once every other week, the more affordable option should do the trick. More than that, though, the convenience and options presented by the Prime Plus make the few hundred dollar price hike worth it.

Reversing Sear Steaks On The Grill

The Reverse sear method is nothing new, but I didnt notice it on pellet grills until my friend Jim Ross showed me how he did it on his Green Mountain Grill. It works by cooking the outside of your steak at a lower temperature first while closing the lid, and then increasing the heat to finish off by getting a nice char or crust on either side of the meat.

-Preheat a smoker to around 250 degrees fahrenheit.

-Season your steaks with salt and pepper to taste.

-Place seasoned steaks in an aluminum pan just large enough to hold them flat, cover tightly with foil, then place in smoker for 12 minutes. This will cook them through without burning outside before searing them over the high heat.

-Remove the steaks from the smoker, uncover, and let them rest for 8 minutes.

-Place grill on high heat with lid closed for 5 minutes to get a nice sear.

-Carefully flip steaks over without burning yourselfthis is why its important not to have flare ups when searing!

-Cook another three minutes per side or until desired doneness is reached.

You may need to adjust cooking times depending on how thick your steaks are, but that will give you good starting point in order to achieve perfectly cooked steak every time!

Steak Doneness By Touch

You may read about the “poke test” for determining whether steak is done. The idea is that you find a place on your body that corresponds to a steak doneness level. You press that place sometimes a part of the face, sometimes a fingertip, sometimes the meaty part of your hand below your thumb note the “springiness,” then touch the steak to see if it has the corresponding “springiness.”

You’ll sometimes see this in a “cooking tricks” type of list, and “trick” is a good word because like a magic trick, it should only be attempted by professionals. Chefs who cook many steaks a day, usually of similar cuts on the same equipment indoors, can get pretty good at using simple touch tests to see if steaks are done.

But as an outdoor griller, you’ve got other factors to consider including the outside temperature, the cut of the steak, whether you marinated it or not, how soft your hands are so unless you cook the exact cuts of meat, prepared the same way, at the exact temperature, many, many times, the poke test will let you down.

Here’s a closer look at the classic steak doneness levels.

RARE Just a minimal sear on the exterior of the meat. People cook it rare because they’re embarrassed to eat it fresh out of the fridge in front of guests.

  • Internal Temperature: 120-130
  • Grill Time: ~2.5 minutes per side
  • Center Color: Red
  • Center Temperature: Cool

MEDIUM Most everyone is happy with this doneness, its not bloody or as dry as the Sahara desert.

What Temperature Do You Cook Steak On A Pellet Grill

Ribeye Steaks on A Pellet Grill

Steaks cook best at a temperature of 350 degrees or higher. Cooking steak at a lower temperature can cause the steak to dry out. However, before placing the steak on the grill, ensure the grill is at a temperature of nearly 500 degrees.

Then, slowly reduce the temperature to anywhere between 350 and 375 degrees after 4minutes of searing both sides.
