Montreal Steak Seasoning Recipe: Table Of Contents
About the ingredients:
- Crushed Peppercorns: These provide the seasoning with the smokey flavor youll absolutely adore.
- Mustard seeds, Kosher salt, paprika, dried dill, etc: These comprise the seasoning itself. It may seem like itd be spicy, but I promise that Montreal steak seasoning doesnt have much of a kick to it at all.
About the blender:
You dont technically have to use a blender for this recipe. Some people recommend a mortar and pestle instead. Ive found, however, that an electric blender speeds up the process. Great for those of us who may not have a lot of time or energy, right?

It worked perfectly! There are quite a few recipes on the Internet for Montreal Steak Seasoning, so I sort of combined them to suit my tastes.
I do love the coarse texture of the store-bought version, so rather than using all ground spices, I opted for things like peppercorns, mustard seed, and coriander seed.
If you have a mortar and pestle or spice mill, thats great! If not, you can put your spices in a zip top bag and crush them with a heavy rolling pin, or the edge of a cast iron skillet. Thats what I did, and it worked great.
Now that I know how easy it is to make my favorite steak seasoning at home, I might just keep doing it this way. And this would be a great gift for the grilling aficionado in your life!
And heres a little secret my brother recently shared with me. This stuff is amazing on hash browns! I dont know why I never thought of it myself, but trust me, youve got to give it a try!

Additional Effects Of High Sodium Intake
The body is naturally so very impressive, for when it notices an imbalance, it tries to correct it on its own unfortunately, that can lead to other conditions if it spends a long time trying to fix the imbalance. This is the case with chronic kidney disease and osteoporosis.
The first response the body has is the excrete out the excess sodium, but that puts a lot of pressure on the kidneys as they have to filter the blood which is coming in very fast and at a very high pressure.
This extra strain on the kidney may cause fatigue and damage to the kidneys which cand eventually lead to chronic kidney disease.
When the body maintains high levels of salt, one of the responses to try to correct this is by releasing calcium from the bones. Since most of our bodies stop storing calcium after we turn 23, the constant loss without replacement leads to weak and brittle bones.
If this continues over a long period of time, it can develop into a condition called osteoporosis where even just a small fall can result in several broken or fractured bones.
So you see, even if you havent been given a specific guideline or diagnosis to reduce sodium, its good for everyone to be aware of their intake and choose lower sodium options such as our super simple seasoning!
This is not only great on steaks but any kind of meat item you may be preparing as well as roasted veggies.

Herbs De Provence Steak Seasoning
Herbs de provence is a flavorful and aromatic blend of green spices. Pick up a jar at the grocery store and create this seasoning blend by mixing two teaspoons kosher salt with a teaspoon each herbs de provence, sugar and coarsely groundblack pepper.
Editors Tip: If you cant find the pre-mixed spice, make your own by combining dried rosemary, basil, thyme, oregano, marjoram, tarragon, parsley and fennel seed.
How To Make Montreal Steak Seasoning
This recipe is the classic version of Montreal Steak Seasoning, but by all means you can make adjustments. For example, if you dont have coarse ground pepper handy, you could choose ground. If you dont have sea salt, try kosher salt instead.
The important part is that if you want a delicious flavor, use high end spices. My two favorites are Penzeys Spices and Dean & Deluca
Beyond that, making this recipe is just about evenly blending: sea salt, coarse black pepper, whole coriander, dill seeds and crushed red pepper flakes. Then blending them with the following ground spices: paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and a touch of cayenne pepper

Montreal Steak Spice Dishes You Need To Try
Montreal Steak Seasoning, famously invented at Schwartzs Deli in the 1940s, has made it round the world in many fabulous dishes. The main ingredients of the spice are garlic, coriander, black pepper, cayenne pepper flakes, dill seed, and salt. So obviously this seasoning would taste good in just about anything. The following are a list of some of the best recipes using Montreal Steak Seasoning. Send us your favorite uses if we forgot any!
Alex’s Montreal Steak Spice Roast Chicken
Reader Bruce Kearney put us on to this recipe of his departed friend Alex, and it certainly qualifies as one of MTL’s best. This chicken is roasted over indirect heat, charcoal preferably. After you clean your chicken, prep it by covering it in yellow mustard and Montreal steak spice, then roast it. This recipe works just as well in an oven and with chicken pieces too. Thanks Bruce!
The announcement was made way back in June, and construction appears to be almost done at this point in time.
No official opening date has been set just yet, though, but according to the RestoMontreal listing, it’s set to open up in January 2017 .
Of course, delays might happen… but I think it’s pretty safe to assume that within the next couple of months, there will be a Hooters in the city of Montreal.
It’ll be the very first Hooters in the city, but not in the Greater Montreal area.
The first Hooters in the province was actually opened in Greenfield Park about a decade or so ago.
It’s still open, and it’s about a 20 minute drive from downtown Montreal. But this new Crescent location is definitely a whole lot more convenient for anyone who lives on-island, obviously.
If you’ve ever been to the Hooters in Greenfield Park, then you probably have a pretty good idea of what the one on Crescent Street will be like.
So, Montrealers who also happen to love Hooters, worry not. Very soon, there’ll be a restaurant right here in the city where you can get your wings, beer, and Hooters fix.
How To Store Montreal Steak Seasoning
Any spices are best stored in an air tight container. Glass is best and metal will work too. You will want any place you store your spices to be cool and dry. Spices are always best in a cupboard or out of the sun.
As far as storing your Copycat Montreal Steak Seasoning, I recommend making it the same day that you intend to use it and just keep any leftovers. These spices will taste best if used within a month or two but can be stored for around 1 year under ideal conditions.

Montreal Steak Seasoning: Tips & Tricks
Heres a few extra tricks to make your seasoning just a little more special.
- Yield: Recipe makes roughly 1 cup.
- Strong Smell: Beware that once you toast and blend the peppercorns its going to give an intense smell of pepper. Try to keep your face away from the blender when you initially open the lid. Trust me, youll be sneezing for a minute straight!
- Label & Storage: I find that I like to store my seasoning in a glass jar. I also use paper washi tape to write on using a permanent marker, and stick on the mason jar. It is a removable tape that wont be forever stuck on your jar making it ideal for spice mixes that are store in glass jars.
- Additions: Theres no one true Montreal steak seasoning recipe. Everyone puts their own twist on it, it seems! If youre looking for inspiration, try adding
- Cayenne: For a true spicy kick.
- Rosemary: To flavor, if youre a fan of the herb.
