Butcherbox And Omaha Steaks: Customer Service

Unboxing Omaha Steaks

All across the board, Butcher Box showed an average of 3 to 4 star reviews on all review platforms.

Omaha didn’t do so well – 1.5 stars average on Yelp, 1.1 stars on Reseller Ratings, and 4.5 stars on Influenster.

Athough there were some complaints about processing and customer service in ButcherBox’s case, it’s still clear who wins this category.

This Paved The Way For A Mail Order Business That Started In The 1950s

The success that they experienced with Union Pacific Railroad caused them to start thinking about other ways they could get their steaks to additional people. During the 1950s, they decided that it was time to begin a mail order business where people anywhere in the country could order steaks and they would ship them to them via rail car. At the time, they were using boxes that were packed in dry ice in order to ensure that the steaks remained good until they got to their destination. These days, they utilize special packaging techniques and refrigerated transport. During the 1950s when they started this mail order business, shipping steaks via mail order was considered one of the most bold ideas that anyone could ever have. It simply hadnt been done before and Omaha Steaks is the one that paved the way for everyone else.

The Company Routinely Gives Back To The Community Of Omaha

This is not a company that has forgotten where it came from or how it got its start. As a result, they can almost always be found supporting different things in and around the community of Omaha. You can almost bet that if its something that supports the community, they will be right there leading the charge.

The Omaha Steaks Inventory Has Expanded Beyond Just Beef Products

Omaha Steaks Review

The name “Omaha Steaks” is, admittedly, quite a bit misleading. While beef might be what comes to mind when you first hear the company’s name, you might be surprised to find that you can actually get a much wider range of specialty products. In the 1960s, Omaha Steaks began expanding its catalog from only offering steaks to also include premium cuts of pork, poultry, and seafood. Since then, they’ve added an even more extensive range of products to the menu, as the company’s delivery services have become much more widespread.

While steaks are still the prime cut of meat at Omaha Steaks, you can actually purchase a huge range of products besides their signature beef as well from Polish-style kielbasa to hearty wild halibut fillets. They’ve even got an expansive set of accoutrements to serve alongside the main course, including charcuteries and potato-based side dishes, as well as some decadent wines. Perfect for your next steak dinner. Or your next kielbasa dinner. Or your next halibut dinner.

They Didnt Start Out As Omaha Steaks

The company wasnt always called Omaha Steaks. When they first went into business, they moved into another old business facility called the Table Top Company. They didnt have a lot of money to spend on creating a sign for the name, so they simply inserted the word steak and called themselves the Table Top Steak Company. Obviously, this wasnt a name that stuck and just a few years later, once they were doing enough business that cost was no longer an issue, they became Omaha Steaks.

How Is The Customer Service

The customer care is anything but poor. We like how the support team operates seven days a week. You can get in touch with a representative by contacting their toll-free phone number during the hours of:

  • Weekdays – 7 am to 10 pm
  • Saturday – 8 am to 7 pm
  • Sunday – 9 am to 5 pm

They would also answer a lot of questions on their website fact center. Their support page is quite extensive to read, making the experience of ordering from them much easier overall.

The Steaks Were Served On Train Cars During The 1940s

Omaha Steaks Review: The Best Premium Meat Delivery Service?

One of the family members who routinely worked in sales ended up striking a business deal with Union Pacific Railroad to sell their steaks during transit. Shortly thereafter, the railroad company was ordering enough steaks to feed every single person that traveled on their train cars. This resulted in extremely large orders and it was the beginning of the business model that they still use today.

What Makes Omaha Steaks Different

Omaha Steaks has been around for more than 100 years, which is more than impressive, especially considering that although popular in general, meat delivery services tend to vanish as quickly as they enter the market. It takes a lot to keep up with the competition and Omaha Steaks seems to have what it takes to stay at the very top regardless of the changing market trends.

What has allowed this company to maintain its high market position for over a century is its dedication to a fully personal approach that makes it one of Americas most trusted family-owned butcheries. Currently run by the fifth generation of the family that started it all, it may sell millions of pounds of beef alone every year, but every meat product it delivers is aged to perfection and hand-cut by its team of experienced butchers. Its products are the exact opposite of the mass-produced, stale, and flavorless items that sit on the shelves of supermarkets across the country. Its focus on premium-quality, grain-fed, naturally raised, naturally aged, and hand-cut meat is what keeps its customers coming back for more.

As a thank-you to its loyal patrons, the company has launched its Steaklover rewards program. By purchasing its products, watching its videos, and referring friends, you earn reward points that you can exchange for free food, that is, Omaha Steaks most popular products.

Overview Of Omaha Steaks

Omaha Steaks has a long history, handed down from generation to generation for over a century. Founded in Omaha around 1917 by a father-son duo from Latvia, the company initially began as a small-scale butcher shop. Quickly they grew, starting mail order ventures in 1953 and reaching global popularity a decade later.

Now, Omaha Steaks is a popular and well-established meat purveyor. In the past, they primarily marketed through teleservice and mailing, but now they also use social media and mobile apps to get with the times.

With two headquarters, three processing locations, and two distribution centers in Omaha, plus 70+ stores nationwide, Omaha Steaks sure flourished from humble beginnings.

Before we jump into this Omaha Steaks review, lets take a look at some pros and cons.

This dessert was incredible. If you watched the video above, youll see when we cut into the cake the molten chocolate inside literally pours out. It was very decadent and rich without being overly sweet. Emily and I actually had to split one between ourselves because, while small, theyre very filling.

It Started Out As A Butcher Shop

Omaha Steaks vs Chicago Steak Company

Today, this is a multi-million-dollar company but it wasnt always that way. As a matter of fact, it started out as a rather small neighborhood butcher shop. The father-and-son duo that began the company initially served the neighborhood that they were located in and things gradually started expanding from there. When they went into this business venture, theres no doubt that they had high hopes for it but it would have been impossible for them to dream that it could have gone as far as it has today.

What Products Does Butcherbox Vs Omaha Steaks Offer

At first glance, Omaha Steaks simply offers more and I was impressed with the breadth of their selection of their butcher shop and meat subscription box. As a larger company you have a larger selection of goods, which include options beyond meat. Of course, quantity does not indicate quality, and vise versa.

  • Omaha Steaks sells 11 cuts of steak, specialty steak , ham, heritage breed pork, lamb, bison, ribs, bacon, and seafood . Non-meat offerings include full meals, appetizers, soups, vegetables, potatoes, wine, gifts, and desserts
  • ButcherBox sells meat and Wild Alaskan salmon, with a focus on more limited cuts of steak, chicken, and pork . While this is far more limited for an online butcher, I did find myself less overwhelmed shopping for options. I also felt more information and attention was paid to specific meats. Much as I appreciated the options with Omaha Steaks, I prefer the narrower focus and high quality of delicious meat from ButcherBox.

For Five Generations Omaha Steaks Has Been A Family Business

In the company’s century-long history, Omaha Steaks has remained a Simon family enterprise the current CEO and owner, Bruce Simon is the great-great-grandson of Omaha Steaks founder J.J. Simon. Simon has grown up in the family business and used to accompany his father to the plant as a child before working there during summer breaks from high school and college. This made Bruce Simon a natural choice to step into the position, as he had served various other positions within the company until 1994, when he became president and CEO.

Unlike other meat industry giants like Tyson Foods and Oscar Mayer, Omaha Steaks remains a privately owned company, meaning that investors cannot purchase shares of Omaha Steaks. While going public is typically looked at as a huge accomplishment for any major company, remaining a private, family-owned business has allowed the company to focus more on its long-term strategies, rather than constantly worrying about quarterly earnings.

Omaha Steaks Subscription Cost

  • $34.99 – $99.99 – 6 oz
  • $29.99 – $120.00 – 4 servings

As weve mentioned earlier, they also offer a subscription service called Box Plans, although it is primarily oriented towards the meat itself. Youll still need to prepare the meals yourself.

You can choose from a wide variety of plans including everything steak or grilling boxes to the more expensive options such as 95 lb. quarter of beef or their Private Reserve Butchers Share which can set you back several thousand dollars for a whole package that includes 6 bi-monthly deliveries.

Their cheaper options, the steak and grilling boxes, can be sent monthly, bi-monthly, or quarterly, while the others will only ship bi-monthly. You could also choose to stock up on their meat all at once, with special discounts available for those extra-large bulk orders.

They Saw A Resemblance To The Land They Were Forced To Leave When They Saw Nebraska

Once they got to the United States, they realized how much they missed their homeland. Even though they had been forced to leave, it was the only place they had ever known and when they saw Nebraska, they immediately saw a strong resemblance to the way the land looked. This is ultimately what caused them to decide to settle on Omaha. Otherwise, Omaha Steaks might have ended up being in some other part of the country.

What Are Omaha Steaks

They are a service that is particularly known for the quality of their steaks. As such, their prices can get high, with some options going over a hundred dollars. They do, however, have plenty of options in the lower price range, as well, so youre sure to find something there even if youre on a tighter budget.

Their offer regularly has plenty of choices from T-bones, roasts, barbeque, and ribeye, to plenty of options based on pork or even poultry, as well as a selection of desserts. Apart from steaks, they also offer meal and meal kit delivery, as well, all at a similarly high standard in quality.

They Also Have A Sister Company

A lot of people dont realize that World Port Seafood is actually operated by the same people as Omaha Steaks. However, these two companies are what you might refer to as sister companies. Both are operated by the same people and for the most part, they are operated in much the same way. The obvious difference is that one caters to steak lovers and one caters to those who love seafood but in reality, you can find a wide variety of foods from both sources.

Filet Mignon Pastry Bites

These are one of the foods you can see us make and taste test in our video review above. For being frozen, these came out delicious. The pastry still had a light crispy and flakey texture, which surprised me for something that was frozen and simply reheated in the oven. The inside filet was juicy and savory. Its definitely something I would order again, especially as an appetizer to be passed out at a party or family get together.

Omaha Steaks Delivery And Shipping

How Much Does a Porterhouse Steak Cost?

They ship most products in Styrofoam-isolated packages cooled with dry ice. The steaks themselves were flash-frozen immediately after being cut, so they should remain as fresh as possible by the time theyre sent out to their customers.

Their shipping cost depends on the weight and value of the package, and it starts at $17.99 if the cost of the package is under $69.99, and they only get more expensive from there, with the faster shipping costing even more. They also charge extra for deliveries outside the contiguous US.

You can, however, occasionally find free shipping, especially if youre a member of their rewards club.

The Company Has Developed An Excellent Reputation

Omaha Steaks has never allowed the fact that they have grown into an international company to taint the way they started doing business so many years ago. They still hold the same values now that they had then. That is precisely why they have such a good reputation, coupled with food that is second to none.

Omaha Steaks Confusing Pricing

Omaha Steaks prices out their foods individually but the bulk of the items can only be bought in multiples. For example, if you wanted to order their Butchers Cut Filet Mignons, the lowest amount you can order is 4 5 oz filets at $74.99.

Things do get a little confusing with the pricing at times because Omaha Steaks is constantly trying to get you to add more items to your cart the whole time youre shopping. For example, I was recently trying to buy their bacon-wrapped filet mignons but at checkout, this is what it said:

To recap, 4 5 oz bacon-wrapped filet mignons came out to $109.99 but if I add any other item to my cart I will save $54.99 . This pricing seems overly complicated in a way to confuse people into buying more.

Deal Breakdown: Omaha Steaks Grand Pack

In my write-up of the 69 cent headphones, I mentioned OmahaSteaks.com and the reservations I had about ordering raw meat for delivery. Its not just my fear that the package will get rerouted to some isolated FedEx warehouse and show up at my door a month later filled with rotten meat, its also the price. Omaha Steaks Private Reserve Filet Mignon will run you $38 a pound and even their boneless chicken breasts cost upwards of $20 a pound. Thats an awful lot of money to pay for frozen meat.

Still, the deal currently featured on the front page of OmahaSteaks.com caught my eye: the Grand Pack, featuring an assortment of steaks, gourmet hot dogs and other meats, for $80 . Tempting, but how much are you really saving here compared to what you would spend if you bought all this stuff a la carte? And more importantly, how does this deal stack up to the high-end meat you might buy at, say, your local Whole Foods?

First things first. Here is what you get in the Omaha Steaks package, along with the per-pound cost of each item if you were to purchase it separately.

Two Filet Mignons Two Top Sirloins Eight Gourmet Franks Four Boneless Pork Chops Four Omaha Steaks Burgers Four Boneless Chicken Breasts Four Stuffed Baked Potatoes

When you add it all up, the total value of the merchandise is around $127, so youre saving close to $50 by buying the Grand Pack. And it ships for free, since Omaha Steaks is currently offering free shipping on all orders over $79.
