What Kind Of Cheese To Goes On Philly Cheesesteaks

There are two options here: provolone or Cheez Whiz, a shelf stable cheese product sold in jars. If Im being honest, American cheese is also pretty delicious, but lets keep it somewhat classic with the cheese.

Personally, I like to use BOTH. I melt some provolone over the steak as it cooks and then drizzle on some Cheez Whiz right before serving. I like the texture of the Cheez Whiz and the flavor that the provolone gives the sandwich. Provolone has a sharper bite to it while the Cheez Whiz is just a completely creamy, almost nacho cheese, situation.

You can make it however you like. Use both, skip the Cheez Whiz if you cant find it or use your own favorite cheese.

How Do I Prepare The Crockpot Philly Cheesesteak

Spray your crock potwith Pam or another non stick cooking spray. Cut the beef round steak into thin slices on a cutting board and brown just a minute in a pan. *** Time-saving tip: I will usually have my butcher cut my meat for me if hes not too busy. That way I can just dump the meat into the crock pot when Im ready to make the recipe.

Add green pepper, onion, stock, garlic salt, pepper and dressing mix to the crock potand cover and cook on low for 8 hours. This is the Italian Dressing Mix I use:

Cover your baking sheet with foil or parchment paper. If youre looking for a baking sheet at a great price, try this covered pan I have it and use it all of the time in my kitchen. Once the meat and veggie mixture is cooked and your crock pot is done, spoon the mixture onto your sliced hoagie buns with the closed ends of the buns on the baking sheet. Top each hoagie with 2 slices of provolone cheese, overlapping on each sandwich.

Bake your sandwich in the oven at 350 or on low broil for just a few minutes to melt the cheese and enjoy!

    Peppers And Onions In Cheesesteak

Its true, a classic cheesesteak sandwich does not usually come with peppers, onions or mushrooms. HOWEVER, I use every opportunity I can to sneak in veggies for my family, and since the combination of caramelized onions, peppers and mushrooms pair so nicely with the thinly sliced steak, we go for it.

It bulks up the filling, meaning I can serve more people, and everyone is happy. That being said, if youre not a fan of any of these ingredients, feel free to leave them out!

Tips For Making The Best Philly Cheesesteak

    Philly Cheesesteak

Below, find our top tips and tricks for making the best Philly cheesesteak.

    • Thinly slice your beef. Use a sharp knife to slice your beef thin. This will create a tender mixture and an easy-to-bite sandwich.
    • Dont overcook the beef. Whatever you do, dont overcook the ribeye! The best part about this sandwich is that it melts in your mouth and is easy to bite. The meat should be so thinly sliced that you can quickly saute it. Consider investing in a mandolin slicer to shave the meat.
    • Use a slow cooker for tougher beef. Dont want to spend the big bucks on ribeye? Want cheesesteaks ready when you get home? Pop a chuck roast into the slow cooker with a cup of beef broth, a touch of Worcestershire, and some salt and pepper. Cook on low for about 6-8 hours. 45 minutes before serving add the veggies of your choice into the crockpot. Spoon the mixture onto your roll and top with cheese.
    • Substitute chicken for beef. If beef is out of the question, substitute it with chicken. A lot of cheesesteak shops offer this option in Philly because it is delicious in its own way. Make sure you slice the chicken thinly and against the grain to get a similar texture.

Have leftover steak in the freezer? Frozen steak is actually easier to slice thin. Let it defrost a quarter of the way, slice it thin, and throw it straight into your pan. Just keep in mind to drain any excess moisture released before adding your sauteed veggies into the mix.
