During the holidays, we always end up eating out more than usual. Between holiday parties, shopping trips for gifts and tons of work to get done before vacation, making dinner at home and even grocery shopping becomes harder. But now, it is time to get back on track!

So last night, I cooked up one of my favorite winter meals French Onion Cube Steaks with Gravy.

I love these cube steaks because meal prep is quick and the house smells amazing while they are in the oven. I was salivating all afternoon, and the first thing Bryan said when he walked in the door was it smells amazing in here! There is just something so comforting in the winter about a warm meal cooking in the oven, making the whole house smell amazing. Makes the house feel loved!

Plus, it only takes 5 ingredients to make this dinner, and water is one of them! Making more meals like this is a 2015 goal of mine because they usually mean quicker dinner prep on a weeknight and they are friendlier on the budget. Cutting back on the food budget can make a big impact on the bottom line.

Typically, after frying, the cube steak is cooked in the oven for 2 or more hours however with the Instant Pot, cooking time is reduced to less than 30 minutes!

Melt In Your Mouth CUBE STEAK

Spray your crockpot with a nonstick spray.

On a plate layout, your cube steak and pepper and very lightly salt if you want. I went easy on the salt since the french onion soup mix and the gravy would have salt in them.

*You could salt these and cover them in flour and lightly brown in a frying pan if you want to but I love to put things in my crockpot and just let it cook. I opted not to do that step but it could add some flavor to your steaks*

Now I make my broth with Better Than Boullion Beef base. I made up two cups in a smaller Pyrex measuring cup. Now, I love my Pyrex measuring cups, I used my 8 cup Pyrex to mix everything together.

In a large bowl, the large Pyrex measuring bowl combines the beef broth, cream of mushroom soup, Au Ju gravy mix, and french onion soup mix all together.

Turn your crockpot on low and lay your steaks out on the bottom. I did make this in my new 8 quart Crock-Pot and was the first time I had used it. I do have to say I miss my old trusty but when the lid shattered it was a sad day.

Pour your mixture over the steaks and cover.

Cook on low for at least four hours. I did stir mine a couple of times once the steak had cooked to allow the gravy mixture to completely cover the steaks.

Now I used my Pampered Chef Mix N Chop to break up the meat into the gravy. My kids thought it was ground beef so there were no complaints and they ate all their dinner!

With sides of crusty French bread to soak up rich brown gravy, a cool green salad topped with crumbled bacon and blue cheese, baked potatoes with lots of toppings and blueberry cobbler with a scoop of ice cream, itll be a meal worthy of summers last official holiday. And the good part is, Ill be able to enjoy my guests with the cool confines of my home instead of outside in 90-degree heat.

Slow Cooker Cube Steak With Gravy

It is nice to get the cooking done early in the day while the kids are at school. Serve with mashed potatoes or noodles.

1 large onion, sliced into rings
3 cups water
1 packet brown gravy mix
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 packet onion soup mix


  • Heat oil in a skillet over med/high heat.
  • Put flour, salt and pepper in a zip lock bag and mix well. Add the cube steaks one at a time, close bag, and shake to coat in flour.
  • Add steaks to hot oil and brown on each side. Transfer steaks to the slow cooker.
  • Add sliced onion rings and 2 cups of water to the crockpot as well.
  • Cook on low setting for 8 hours.
  • Mix together gravy mix, onion soup mix and the cream of mushroom soup with the last 1 cup of water. Add this to the slow cooker and mix gently so you do not tear up the steaks.
