History Of Quaker State Corporation

Quaker State Corporation is a leading producer and marketer of motor oil to international markets. The company also operates quick oil change centers, markets engine and fuel treatments, and manufactures and markets car wash products, car air fresheners, and automotive safety lighting equipment. Second in size to Pennzoil, Quaker State is engaged in what its dynamic CEO, Herbert Baum, characterizes as a guerilla war for the top ranking among U.S. motor oil companies.

19th-Century Origins

Quaker State’s origins may be traced to the founding of Oil City, Pennsylvania, in the 19th century. Oil was first discovered there in 1859 by “Colonel” Edwin Drake, bringing instant prosperity to the region. As evidence of this growth, the census for Oil City registered 12 families in 1860 five years later, the town had a population of 6,000. Derricks were set up within a few feet of each other, and barges loaded with newly drilled oil rushed en masse from the oil fields down the Pioneer Run Creek, creating a traffic jam at Oil City on their way to the mouth of the Allegheny River. Such expansion and competition continued into the 20th century.

Company Formation in the 1920s

Quaker State’s first president was Harry Crawford, part owner of President Oil Company, and in his first year in this capacity, Quaker State ran up $6.8 million in sales. Its profit line represented a fine rate of return, and bode well for the company’s future.

Expansion in the 1970s–80s

About Quaker Steak And Lube

The first Quaker Steak and Lube was founded in 1974 with a dual mission: save America’s great muscle cars and serve a great steak. That very first cook-your-own-steak restaurant even boasted a real 1936 Chevy on its original grease rack.

At today’s Quaker Steak and Lube restaurants, you’ll still find an automotive theme. For example, there’s the Arizona El Camino, a Steakburger loaded with pepper jack cheese. But there’s much more to this beloved chain, including:

  • The wings: Though steaks were originally the focus at Quaker Steak, the restaurant has become known as a wing hot spot in recent years. The wings have won national awards, and they’re as popular as they are critically acclaimed. The team serves 80 million wings annuallythat’s 10 for every person in New York City.

  • The wing sauces: They run the gamut from Kentucky bourbon to Triple Atomic, which ranks a 500,000 on the Scoville Scale.

  • The steaks: Think 1-pound bone-in rib eyes and juicy top sirloins aged for 28 days.

  • The Steakburgers: Served on garlic brioche buns, each one comes with two hand-smashed patties, adorned with toppings such as mac ‘n’ cheese or crispy sweet pickles.

Quaker Steak And Lube Closes Mentor Location

The flyer states:

“We are closed. We would like to thank our guests and staff for supporting our Mentor, OH restaurant. At this time, we have made the unfortunate decision to close this location. We encourage you to visit one of our other Cleveland area restaurants.”

The three options listed on the flyer include locations in Medina Township, Sheffield Village and Valley View.

Russell Berner, executive vice president/partner of QSL Holdings, was not as definitive when contacted about the future of the Quaker Steak and Lube location in Mentor.

“The location is closed temporally for consideration of remodeling and/or rebranding,” Berner said. “It may reopen in the future with no definitive plan or date determined. We thank all our loyal guests and employees that have been vital to the Quaker Steak and Lube for almost 15 years. We hope to see them at our Valley View or other regional locations in the region.”

The restaurant and the parking lot at 7834 Reynolds Road take up a significant piece of land on the busy Mentor corridor, making it prime real estate if Quaker Steak and Lube does not return, according to Kevin Malecek, director of economic development for Mentor.

“The State Route 306/Reynolds Road corridor continues to be a highly sought after and desirable spot for national and regional retailers and restaurants,” Malecek said. “The city looks forward to learning more about Quaker State’s eventual plans for the property and stands ready to lend support.”

Pennzoil Spinoff To Merge With Quaker State

Pennzoil Co. said it will split off its motor oil business and Jiffy Lube chain of oil change centers into a new company that will merge with Quaker State Corp. The merger would create a company with annual sales of $3 billion and bring together two of the most popular brands of motor oil. It also would combine Jiffy Lube, the worlds largest franchiser of fast oil change centers, with one of its biggest competitors in Quaker States Q-Lube. Houston-based Pennzoil would spin off its motor oil, refined products and franchise operations into a separate, publicly traded company, which would then merge with Irving, Texas-based Quaker State. The move comes five months after Pennzoil fended off a hostile $4.2-billion takeover bid from Union Pacific Resources Group Inc. after repeatedly calling the offer inadequate. Quaker State has annual sales of $1.2 billion. Pennzoil shares rose $3 to close at $69.81, and Quaker State fell $3.69 to $19.81. Both trade on the NYSE.
