How Do You Make Steak Kabobs

How To Make Steak Kabob | Easy Beef Kobobs Recipe | Episode 223

Making kabobs is one of the easiest tasks youll ever tackle. Once you have your meat cut to the right size, thread all of your ingredients onto the skewers. Grill the beef kabobs to perfection on each side then brush on that glorious, aromatic garlic butter mixture. You can then serve one of the easiest dinners youve ever made.

Everyone has their own steak preference and mine is sirloin. Sirloin is what I used for my beef kabobs recipe although other cuts of steak will get the job done. I would suggest using rib eye or New York strip steak as a substitute for sirloin, although they tend to be pricier.

If you dont have access to a grill or you just dont feel like getting the grill set up, these steak kabobs can be broiled in the oven as well. You can also cook them indoors on a grill pan. Be sure to follow the directions in the recipe for broiling rather than grilling if you go the oven route.

How To Make Steak Kabobs On The Grill

  • Combine steak kabob marinade ingredients in casserole dish. Add steak and allow to marinate 1+ hour, up to 4 hours refrigerated, covered.
  • Assemble Skewers Add steak and vegetables to wooden skewers, leaving room to handle.
  • Grill Preheat grill to medium-high heat. Brush olive oil onto the grate. Brush vegetables with olive oil. Add skewers to grill. For steak prepared medium, grill 2 minutes per side for a total of 8 minutes.
  • What Kind Of Steak Is Best

Although higher quality, more expensive steaks are usually best for grilling, the great thing about steak kabobs is you can get away with using a more affordable cut of meat, since the meat is marinated! I usually use top sirloin, since its more affordable but still tastes amazing and is thick enough to get nice big cubes of meat.

    Fresh Beef Is The Best

The kabob recipe features beef and vegetable cubes that are directly grilled over direct heat rather than mixing them up and coating with a thick kind of sauce, so you can feel the strong and sharp taste of the ingredient in every bite. Therefore, it is essential to buy a fresh cut of beef as there is nothing to cover up the stale taste of low-quality beef.

Fresh beef can be found in a local butcher shop, in the fresh meat section of a grocery store or supermarket in any country in the world. If you want to get your favorite fresh cut of beef, it will be ideal to make friends with the butchers.

Picking The Best Steak For Kabobs

During the summer months, my family spends a lot of time outside cooking on the grill. As a matter of fact, we use the grill more than we use the stove in our kitchen. Using the grill certainly allows you the ability to beat the heat in the kitchen, even if it means facing humidity outside. The effort is certainly worth your time. You might ask, what is the best thing to grill during this splendid time of year?

There are a few things that I like to grill the most, and one of those things is steak kabobs. While this dish seems easy to make at a glance, it can be messed up without a doubt. Making steak kabobs the right way starts out with making the right choices of which steak you should use.

There are several steak options that fit the bill for making best beef kabobs, and not all of the options are extremely expensive. If you are looking to make steak kabobs on a budget, you do not need to fret. The right option is out there. What steaks should you use? What beef cut to get? Well, here is a closer look at what is the best steak for shish kabobs.

Whats The Difference Between Kebab And Kabob

Guess what. Its essentially the same thing. Kebab is a Middle Eastern dish made with marinated meats skewers together and grilled. Kabob is our American translation of saying Kebab but they are the same thing chunks of meat grilled on a skewer. You say kebab I say kabob who cares, lets eat it!

Some people call it Shish Kebab too, which is a Turkish dish thats meat skewered with vegetables. But again, in the States we call it Shish Kabobs.

Can I Prep Chicken Kebabs In Advance

You can certainly marinate the chicken in advance and thread the veggies onto the skewers, but I dont recommend cooking these chicken pineapple kebabs in advance and then reheating them. I worry that the chicken would become tough and dry that way.

Likewise, I dont recommend assembling and then freezing these chicken shish kebabs. The vegetables would turn to mush and the texture of the chicken would also change.

What You Will Need To Cook Steak Kabob

How to Make Beef Kebabs – Easy Steak Kabobs Recipe
    • The right steak for your kabobs
    • Vegetables and fruits cut to size to meet your flavor fancy
    • A marinade that compliments the meat and roughage
    • Kabob skewers

Your first inclination when it comes to kabob skewers is to lean toward the wooden, disposable models. This option is great if you plan on making a lot of kabobs at once. It also affords you the opportunity to focus on keeping portion sizes intact.

However, for the sake of saving the ecosystem from experiencing more trash in a dump site, going with metal skewers is a great idea. Most of these skewers are relatively inexpensive, and they can be reused again and again. They only require a little cleaning after each use. At the same time, you can purchase as many of them and in any size that you need them to meet your routine grilling needs.

You might be one of those people who are guilty of letting your grilling grates build up with each use. Sure, this idea sounds about as good as letting a cast iron pan season itself over time. Unfortunately, it can mean risking the invitation of foodborne diseases.

Therefore, you need to clean your grate after each use. If you would rather not have to focus on the time it takes to perform this meticulous cleaning process, you can always cover the grate with tin foil before each use. Regardless of which option you pick, you need to make sure the landing pad for your food on the grill has been well-oiled with oil that has a higher smoke point.

How Long Do You Cook Kabobs On The Grill

    • Choice meat. Regarding the choice of meat, I follow as they say a slice of tender meat needs to be cooked quickly in high heat! Because cooking it for a long time will dry up the meat causing it to toughen.
    • Temperature check. You can use a food thermometer to check the doneness of meat: 145 for medium-cooked steak.
    • The thickness of the meat. In this recipe, I cut the meat into 1 to 1½ inches thick cubes and it took me just about 5 minutes to get the medium doneness that I like.

    How To Grill Steak Kabobs

  • Assemble kabobs: alternate red pepper, green pepper, red onion, meat, yukon potatoes and mushrooms on a skewer. Repeat. Continue process until ingredients are gone.
  • Heat grill to medium high heat, about 375-400 degrees F.
  • Make sure that grill grates are clean. Spray grill grates with cooking spray or rub down with an olive oil soaked rag.
  • Place steak kabobs directly on the grill. Grill each side for 4 minutes, you want a nice char. Basting the kabobs with remaining marinade while grilling. Remove the kabobs from grill and let rest for 5 minutes.
  • Serve.

    • Feel free to mix up the veggies. Zucchini, yellow squash, green peppers, or cherry tomatoes would be good too!
    • Brush a little remaining marinade onto the meat and veggies for extra flavor and then discard any remaining marinade.
    • Preheat a clean grill to high heat.
    • Grill the kabobs for 8-10 minutes, giving them a little turn every couple minutes. Dont overcook, you want the steak to be nice and juicy!
    • Once theyre just right use tongs to pull them off the grill and let them rest for 5 minutes. Enjoy!

Load Up The Grill With Kabobs

Load up the grill with your kabobs. Take the time to space them out evenly for the sake of making sure they are cooked off at the same time. Do not overload the grill with too many kabobs at once. If you are grilling for a large crowd, you will have to grill these kabobs in shifts. Make sure to use those heating zones with care as leaving kabobs on the hotter side for too long will burn the vegetables or fruit long before the steak is finished. Now is the time to also decide on the level of rarity you want in your steak. Shorter cook times will obviously lead to more pink being left in the steak.

    How Hot How Long

Grill kabobs over direct heat of approximately 400°F. Kabobs with 3/4-inch cubes require approximately 8 to 10 minutes of total time on the grill, flipping halfway through. Bigger chunks will take a few more minutes. If you notice that some skewers are cooking faster than others, move them toward a cooler zone or to indirect heat. For medium-rare kabobs, the internal temperature should be 145°F after youve completed cooking. Protip: Kabobs will continue to cook a little more and gain a few more degrees while resting on the platter.

Grilled Steak Kabobs with Vegetables – Homemade Marinade and Sauce!

When I buy steak to grill whole, I almost always opt for a striploin. I look for sales and enjoy it when its less expesnive!

It is naturally more tender and has more flavor so you can get great results without a lot of prep.

When you are marinating steak, you have a lot more options!

Because we are going to be both tenderizing and adding flavor, I opt for a leaner, less expensive cut like sirloin. It is boneless and easy to slice, and is going to be a great vehicle for soaking up this kabob marinade.

Generally, the less expensive your steak, the more time you should allow for marinating and tenderizing.

    • Check at the butchery Talk with your friendly butcher about a recommended meat for kabobs. Dont forget to relay the flavor profile you like and be sure also to mention your preferred texture.
    • Steak Marbling Look for steaks that have a great deal of marbling and avoid any steaks that have large chunks of fat that cannot easily be trimmed away.
    • Sirloin The top sirloin is a cut from the loin that offers good flavor in a thick cut ideal for grilling, broiling, sautéeing, or pan-frying. Although it doesnt have as much marbling as a ribeye or New York strip, it certainly has enough to provide good flavor for a steak. Its also cheaper than other cuts of meat.
    • Ribeye is a good choice as well. This variety is often used in marinating to make it tender. I also marinate meat to let it absorb more flavor.
    • Filet mignon is usually presented as a round cut taken from the thinner end of a piece of tenderloin. It is often the most tender and lean cut. Due to the small amount of filet mignon able to be butchered from each animal, it is generally the most expensive cut of meat.

One item of note: dont use stew meat for your steak kabobs. While it might be tempting to grab that package of pre-cut meat, its not what you want here.
