What Raised Right Means To Crowd Cow

No Unnecessary Antibiotics

Animal welfare is of utmost importance to us, and we only work with farms and producers that provide humane and clean living environments for their livestock.Better living conditions mean animals are naturally healthier so antibiotics simply aren’t necessary. In the rare cases where an animal gets sick or requires medical attention, antibiotics are only used therapeutically never to promote growth or to “proactively” prevent diseases.

No Added Hormones

We believe animals should develop at their own pace 100% free of artificial growth hormones. In other markets, animals are not typically provided enough space to build up their muscle, so hormones are given to promote growth. In contrast, our farms take the extra time, care, and effort to allow their animals to grow the way nature intended, gaining weight naturally. This translates to not only the safety and health of the animals, but also the premium quality of our products.

Personally Known & Taste-Tested

We have strong relationships with each producer we work with and have done our homework to ensure they meet our high standards. We only supply meat and seafood that we’d put on our own tables a product that’s delicious and raised ethically, cleanly, and sustainably always taste-tested by experts and better than anything you can find in your grocery store.

Where Does Flat Iron Steak Come From

If you are looking for a thin cut of steak that is perfect for grilling, which will also end up well-marbled and soft, consider none other than the flat iron steak.

You might not be familiar with this type of steak but let me tell you, it is one of the most delicious and tender steaks you will ever come across!

Flat iron steak is gaining popularity in the United States and is now more widely available in grocery stores and on restaurant menus as a more affordable substitute to expensive steak cuts like New York strips.

It is almost as tender as tenderloin but you can buy it at a much cheaper cost as compared to that of tenderloin.

This type of steak is also sometimes referred to as top blade steak or top blade fillet. In the UK, a very popular steak is the butlers steak, which is known as shoulder top blade steak in USA.

If you go to Australia and New Zealand, you will find the same steak by the name of oyster blade steak.

What Exactly Is Flat Iron Steak

Flat iron steak was initially part of the topmost section of the blade roast. The tough connective tissue running at the center of the blade roast led to the birth of flat iron steak.

When the butcher removes the connective tissue, the bottom section is the flat iron steak, while the remaining piece is the top blade steak. The piece of meat obtained its name from its appearance that resembles the traditional metal flat iron.

One other quick thing to note is that I have not seen any flat iron steaks at Costco, so you won’t see them on this list.

    Why Is My Steak Chewy

Overcooking can make your meat dry but undercooked meat can be quite chewy. Dont be afraid of an instant-read meat thermometer and pull your meat when its ready. For naturally tender cuts like beef tenderloin, that can be as rare as 125ºF, whereas tougher cuts like brisket should be cooked to 195ºF.

Flat iron is a cut from the chuck, with a substantial piece of gristle in the middle. Its excellent in stews, as is most chuck.

Is It Tough To Cook Flat Iron Steak

Why the Flat Iron Steak is the best steak you’ve never heard of.

The short answer to this question is not at all.

But the real question is, why is it not tough to cook flat iron steak when it comes from the tough muscles which are usually excessively used by the cow?

This is because removing the connective tissue attached to the muscle leaves you with two distinct cuts of steak:

One is called top blade steak, which is hard and the other one is flat iron steak, which is much tender and usually full of marbling.

The term marbling is used to refer to the thin white strips of fat that run through the steak.

I would conclude by suggesting you try this extraordinarily flavorful steak at least once and I am certain that you will not stop there.

If you are a steak lover and you have not tried flat iron steak then you are definitely missing out on something big.

Flavor Texture Fat Content And Tenderness

The Flat Iron has become popular for two main reasons. Its extensive marbling gives it plenty of flavor, and its tenderness.

The tenderness is a result of it being located towards the top of the shoulder, where it gets less exercise than the rest of the shoulder muscles.

There is no fat cap on it traditionally. Still, some butchers do now present it with some fat attached to give it extra flavor when cooking.

    What Is A Good Price

It was definitely surprising to see the cost of a flat iron steak now. They are on par somewhat with top sirloin and Ribeye steaks. Kroger came in with the best price at $8.99 a pound. Trader Joe’s was all the way up to $12.99 a pound. I felt the Trader Joe’s price was too high. For a $1 more a pound you can get a grass fed Flat Iron steak at Whole Foods Market. I would choose the Whole Foods one over the Trader Joe’s steak.

Overall, I would have to give the win to Kroger as they had the best price. The Kroger Flat Iron Steaks comes to the store pre-packaged. Since Flat Iron steak are a little tricky to cut I typically find that they come into the store pre-packaged and not cut on site. So having a flat iron steak freshly cut in store is not something that is usually factored in. But if it was cut on site, you know you got a good butcher to go to.
