Directions For Homemade Montreal Steak Seasoning
Creating an incredible jar of steak seasoning doesnt get much easier than this.
Place whole peppercorns in a small saute pan. Heat on medium-high heat for 2-3 minutes until toasted but not burnt. Mix often to prevent burning. Pour warm peppercorns into a high powered blender and blend for 5-10 seconds until broken apart.
Combine the peppercorns with all the other seasonings listed above. Mix well in a bowl. Then, using a funnel pour into a mason jar. Label the jar, and store in a dark dry place for up to 3 months. Use as directed in recipes or pat onto steaks before grilling.

Tips For The Best Steak Marinade And How To Cook The Perfect Steak
- For this marinade, the steaks need a good three hours to soak in all that goodness. So make sure to get these babies prepped well ahead of time.
- Let the steaks come to room temperature before grilling. Let them sit out for 30 minutes before cooking, this will make sure an even cook on the inside.
- You do not want to throw cold steaks on a hot grill, they just flat-out wont cook evenly. Plus it will save you a few minutes as well.
- Make sure the grill is SUPER hot before placing the steaks on. You want to get a nice sear like the photos here, thats the flavor bomb!
- You need to let the steaks rest for at least 10 minutes before cutting into them. Dont worry, add a pad of butter on each steak , cover with foil and let it rest, it wont get cold!

I am going to detail each of these parts separately so you can get the full run-down. Today I will start with the Marinated, Grilled Sirloin Steak.
We get this steak rub/marinade recipe from our good friend Javier. First time we ever had it, we knew we had to buy the same thing. Steak has never been this good. Recipe is as follows:
1-2 tablespoons seasoning per steak 1-2 tablespoons per steak of olive oilSteak

- If your steaks are thin sear on each side and pull them off!! Internal temperature should be around 140 to 145.
- The original recipe calls for red wine vinegar, but I actually prefer balsamic. Use whichever one that you have on hand.
- The recipe listed below is per pound of steak. Simply multiply based on the total weight of the steaks that you need to marinate.
- This marinade works with any type of steak.

It worked perfectly! There are quite a few recipes on the Internet for Montreal Steak Seasoning, so I sort of combined them to suit my tastes.
I do love the coarse texture of the store-bought version, so rather than using all ground spices, I opted for things like peppercorns, mustard seed, and coriander seed.
If you have a mortar and pestle or spice mill, thats great! If not, you can put your spices in a zip top bag and crush them with a heavy rolling pin, or the edge of a cast iron skillet. Thats what I did, and it worked great.
Now that I know how easy it is to make my favorite steak seasoning at home, I might just keep doing it this way. And this would be a great gift for the grilling aficionado in your life!
And heres a little secret my brother recently shared with me. This stuff is amazing on hash browns! I dont know why I never thought of it myself, but trust me, youve got to give it a try!

McCormick grill mates Montreal steak seasoning is the secret ingredient in my latest grilled meal.
The seasoning is a combination of coarsely ground peppers, garlic and spices for bolder tasting steaks and burgers.
