For Maximum Omega3 Benefit Do Not Drain
Conventional brands pre-cook fish on racks, draining away healthy nutrients and Omega3 oils. It is then packed in water, oil or often a GMO broth and cooked again. This impairs natural flavor and texture.
Safe Catch does it differently. We hand pack raw, sashimi-grade fish in the can and then slow cook each one to perfection in its own natural juices. This retains 100% of the tunaâs vital oils and freshness.
Do not drain Safe Catch tuna. There are no additives and fillersâjust pure tuna in each can!
The Trick To Cooking Ahi Tuna Steak
Ahi Tuna Steak can be cooked on the grill. But, Ive found its best cooked pan seared. It doesnt matter what recipe you use. Usually, with Ahi Tuna, the simpler, the better. Salt, pepper, lemon pepper, extra virgin olive oil. Done.
The trick, youll find, is not to overcook the fish. Even if you generally like your food cooked well done, Ahi Tuna is a food you want to cook as little as possible. As it cooks, it very quickly hardens, so its good to make sure the center is nice and red .
Make sure your Ahi Tuna is safe to prepare rare. Check the packaging for the date or any indication of quality. If its fresh, give it the smell test. And, push the fresh Ahi Tuna through the packaging. You dont want it too mushy or too firm.
Generally, any Ahi Tuna Steak you find in the grocery store is fit to be cooked rare. Or medium rare if prefer. Give it a try and resist temptation to over-cook. A few minutes on each side is all you need.

How Can Safe Catch Be The Only Brand That Tests Every Tuna For Mercury
Mercury levels between two individual tuna can vary widely even between two tuna of the same size, same school and from the same location. The only way to know the purity of a fish is to test it. We partnered with engineers and scientists to develop a proprietary technology that can test each and every tuna for mercury. No other brand does this.
Safe Catch has tested over 2,000,000 fish to date. Every fish used in Safe Catch Ahi, Wild Yellowfin tuna is tested to a mercury limit 10 TIMES stricter than the FDA limit. If the fish does not pass our strict standards, Safe Catch does not buy the fish. They are still good fish, theyâre just not Safe Catch fish.

How To Serve Seared Tuna
Searing tuna is truly a 5 minute recipe! However, to make it a 5 minute dinner its easiest to have a bunch of leftovers on hand for serving it. For our seared ahi tuna dinner, Alex and I used up some of the components we had on-hand. We had just made Cauliflower Tacos with Yum Yum Sauce, so we realized that many of those components could be reworked to make a seared tuna bowl. Turns out Yum Yum sauce is perfect as a seared ahi tuna sauce too! Heres how we accessorized our seared tuna:
- Instant Pot rice
- Crispy breaded cauliflower
- Pickled red onions
- Spinach that we sauteed for 2 minutes until wilted, mixed with a few pinches salt and a drizzle of toasted sesame oil

A seared tuna steak is a bit different than the canned tuna everyone is used to. For one thing: it comes in a whole, beautiful raw steak that holds its form much easier than other kinds of fish, which may tend to flake apart.
For another thing: it is usually cooked medium-rare: seared on the outside, red on the inside.
It actually looks very similar to a beef steak in this regard. It. Is. AMAZING.

How To Sear Tuna
Seared tuna is one of the first quick dinner ideas Alex and I used to make when we first started cooking together! If youve never had ahi tuna, its time to start. NOW! Seared ahi tuna does not tasty fishy at all. So if youre looking to convince someone ambivalent about seafood, seared tuna is a great place to start. The flavor? Seared tuna is so, so delicious. It tastes buttery on the inside and salty savory on the outside. Its one of both Alex and my favorite foods and contains a ton of nutrients, especially for people who eat mostly vegetarian and vegan like us.
How to sear tuna? Its so quick and simple:
- Heat a skillet to medium high heat with a small drizzle of olive oil. Add the tuna and cook for about 1 to 2 minutes per side.
- Remove the tuna and slice it against the grain into half-inch thick slices. After its cut youll see that the inside is a beautiful pink color and and just the edges are browned. Thats what you want! Our tuna was sashimi grade and intended for sushi or sashimi, it was pre-cutwhich was helpful.

Tips And Tricks For The Best Pan
1. Use a cast iron skillet. If you dont have one, I beg you to reconsider this important life decision. Inexpensive, virtually indestructible, and super versatile, my cast iron skillet is my all-time favorite cooking tool.
The reason why its perfect for cooking this steak is that it can get searing hot, which is essential for developing a proper crust on your steak.
If you dont have one and you need steak NOW, youd be able to use another heavy bottomed skillet . Just make sure you dont use non-stick: you have to get the pan too hot to safely use a pan with a non-stick coating.
2. Choose the right cut. I usually buy New York Strip- in my opinion, its the best for the price. Im far too frugal of a person to be buying the really pricey cuts of steak, but Im far too snobby of a cook to use the real cheap stuff .
Rest assured, you can certainly use other cuts of steak with this technique, depending on how frugal/snobby you are 🙂
Look for a cut of meat that is about 1-inch thick and has fat marbled throughout.
You want to avoid large stripes of fat running through the center of the meat . The marbled fat will disperse throughout the meat and make it super tender, but large pieces of fat wont break down and will remain tough.
Allow the meat to sit out for a minimum of fifteen minutes- ideally, a half an hour. This is the perfect amount of time for you to get some chili garlic sweet potato fries in the oven, as I did .
More is better. Trust me.
