The Scoop On Steak Seasoning

The Best Steak Marinade Grilled Steak Recipe

So, what are the different ways to enhance the flavor of your steak? The first method is marinating. The basic premise of marinating is soaking meat in a flavorful liquid for anywhere for a few minutes to a full day. Often, an acidic ingredient is used to help break down and tenderize the meat as it rests. Over time, the marinade seeps into the meat to make it more tender, juicy, and flavorful.

Brining is the second method. You could think of it as the cousin of marinating. While the focus of a marinade is to infuse flavor, the main focus of a brine is to infuse moisture into the meat. In its simplest form, a brine is a solution of salt and water. Sometimes sugar, herbs, or spices are added for a little extra flavor, however the main goal of moisturizing the meat is attained through the salt and water. This method is typically used for meats like chicken or turkey which are especially susceptible to drying out.

The third method, rubbing or seasoning, is similar to marinating in the sense that you are tenderizing and adding flavor to the meat. However, rubs are entirely made up of dry ingredients like different herbs and spices. Rubs are great for getting a nice crust on the outside while locking the meats natural juices within. Coupled with an exciting sauce or grilling your rubbed meat over different types of wood you can create incredibly mouth-watering steaks.

How Do You Know Your Steak Is Done

Everyone loves their steak done to different degrees and using a thermometer is the way to go to make sure you cook it just right. Remember too, when your steak is taken off the heat it will continue to cook for a minute or two, raising the temperature about 2-4 degrees more. I often remove my meat right before it reaches that perfect temp.

How To Make Steak Seasoning Blend

Making your steak seasoning blend is really easy. It’s just a matter of combining your desired spices and dried herbs and knowing what you are going to store any unused steak seasoning in.

So the first thing to consider is how much steak seasoning you want to make at this time. Scale the recipe up or down as needed.

Next, gather ingredients and an appropriate storage container. Something as simple as a ziploc plastic storage bag works, or a saved spice container that has been washed and dried. I like my little apothecary bottles, but they were ordered online.

Whatever you choose to use for storing your steak seasoning mix, it will last longer if stored in your cabinets, away from the light. I say the seasoning blend is best used within 3 months, but really it will last longer if stored appropriately.

Typically, I use a bowl and combine the ingredients as I measure them out. Then I season my steak and store away whatever is left once I have finished cooking my protein.

The Best Way To Use Steak Seasoning Blends

Once you decide on a steak seasoning, you will have to apply it to the meat before you cook it. This simply means generously rubbing the seasoning all over steak.

If you like, you can drizzle a bit of oil on the steak before you rub in the seasoning, which helps the seasoning stick and can add fat for sear marks.

It isnt required to add oil, so only do so if you like a bit of extra fat or if the seasoning isnt sticking the way you would prefer for it too.

In addition, while you rub in the seasoning, make sure youre massaging the steak well so it ends up covered well and evenly distributed.

When To Put Dry Rub On A Steak:

There are two methods that work best:

40 Minutes before you cook the steak: This allows the salt to penetrate through the surface and break down the muscle fibers, which results in a more tender meat. During this time, the liquid that initially surfaces has time to reabsorb, which keeps the meat juicy.

Overnight: You can apply dry rub a day in advance and let it sit overnight in the refrigerator. The surface may appear to be dryer in the morning but you will actually only lose about 5% of moisture which is far less than what youd lose if you were to cook the steak immediately, which is up to 20%.

How Long Before Cooking Should You Season A Steak

If I have the time, I like to rub seasoning onto my steak a few hours before I cook it, so that the flavors have time to penetrate the meat. If you dont have the time to wait, its also fine to season the steak right before you cook it. I recommend massaging the seasoning into the steak so that the spices really stick to the meat. If you choose to season your steak in advance, you can let it sit in the refrigerator for up to 8 hours before you plan to cook it.

I always have this steak seasoning on hand its the perfect versatile spice blend to add flavor to almost any type of meat!

How To Make It

Combine all of the ingredients together in a small bowl or jar.

Store in a mason jar or airtight container, in the pantry, for up to 6 months. While the seasoning mix will stay good in the pantry for much longer than 6 months, after 6 months, the spices will begin to lose their flavor.

Thats why I recommend labeling the steak seasoning with a date and trying to use up the seasoning mix within 6 months. In my house, we double this recipe and its easily gone in a month, so I dont think youll have a problem using it all up!

Tips And Tricks For Preparing High

In some cases, people will say that a great cut of steak needs no more seasoning applied than a bit of salt and pepper.

However, many others appreciate using a steak seasoning to add an extra depth of flavor to the meat. Even if youre fine using the salt and pepper method, it can be exciting to try something new and bring additional flavors into the mix.

Depending on the cut of steak you choose, it can be a great idea to tenderize the meat before you begin to cook it.

This can easily be done by covering the meat with plastic wrap and then using a rolling pin to smack it a few times. When you do this, it starts to break up the meat fibers and can make steak more tender and delicious when it’s time to eat.

BEST Steak Marinade for Grilled Ribeye Steaks

While most store-bought steak seasonings arent going to be especially expensive, that doesnt mean that they all come cheap either.

Sometimes you might want something simple that costs very little, while other times you might want to spend a bit more for a premium spice blend. A huge part of this comes down to your budget and how seriously you take steak seasonings.

If your budget is minimal, you may want to choose a less expensive seasoning or a smaller container or a high-quality one.

Those with higher budgets may want to try something new and more expensive or just get more of a favorite family seasoning.

Do You Marinate The Steak Overnight

On average, I would recommend marinating the steaks for no more than two hours.

The reason is that the marinade does not get past the upper layers of the meat.

So marinating the steaks overnight is unnecessary, especially if you are using ribeye steaks or other relatively more tender cuts.

Marinating steaks overnight can be applicable if you use tougher cuts such as skirt steaks.

    What Is Steak Seasoning

Steak seasoning is a mixture of herbs, spices, and salt that is used as a dry rub for meat. Like I mentioned above, there are different variations including the Brazilian steak seasoning, Montreal seasoning which contain ingredients like garlic, black pepper, kosher salt, coriander.

This seasoning can be used on meat and also on sauteed vegetables or on chicken. I like to make my seasonings at home because I can control and adjust the ingredients and I know exactly what goes in it. No artificial flavor, it’s made fresh and it is so much cost-effective.
