Steak ‘n Shake Chicken Fingers & Sauces – Review

Overall I would give the chicken tenders at Steak ‘n Shake a B+. The tenders were succulent, made with good cuts of chicken, and the batter was proportionate to the chicken meat. However, the batter did not have much flavor to it and you have to order 2 helpings of the chicken fingers in order for it the meal to be considered satisfying. I will definitely be back for these chicken “fingers,” and when I return I’ll be sure to order 2 servings and a milkshake to ensure I leave full.

During A Trip To Chicago I Ate At Three Fast

I consider myself a chicken-tender aficionado. As a child growing up in New York, I loved eating chicken tenders or chicken nuggets at America’s favorite fast-food chains, like McDonald’s and Burger King, and over the years, I learned the perfect chicken tender is crispy, lightly seasoned, and moist.

When I visited Chicago this summer, I decided to try chicken tenders and fries at three fast-food chains I never had access to growing up. I visited Culver’s, Raising Cane’s, and Steak ‘n Shake, all of which have locations in the Midwest.

Why Marinate In Buttermilk

The buttermilk acts as a tenderizer which makes the chicken juicy. Even just a half an hour soak will help with flavor and it also acts as a binding agent for the first coat of seasoned flour.

Even if the chicken tenders are going to be oven baked they should still be marinaded in buttermilk before baking.

Origins Of Steak And Shake Chicken Tenders

The origins of the Steak and Shake chicken tenders are not entirely clear, but there is a lot of speculation on where they came from. One popular theory is that the food was created in the 1950s at The Steak and Shake in Texas. However, it has been said that the restaurant did not open until 1962.

The origins of steak and shake chicken tenders are not entirely clear, but there is a lot of speculation on where they came from. One popular theory is that the food was created in the 1950s at The Steak and Shake in Texas. However, it has been said that the restaurant did not open until 1962.

This is a story of how the origins of steak and shake chicken tenders were created.

The first Steak and shake were made in 1900 by a man named Joe E. Brown. He started with a single restaurant in Oklahoma City, OK, that served steak sandwiches and milkshakes for breakfast. The restaurant was called Browns Lunch Counter. The restaurants name was later changed to Joes Cafe, but it still served the same food items as before.

Joe Browns cafe became well known for its signature dish: steak sandwiches and milkshakes for breakfast. It became so popular that people started ordering it by name instead of just saying Steak sandwich. This led to the creation of an entirely new dish the hamburger steak sandwich, which is now more commonly known as the Ste

Steak ‘n Shake Is Transitioning To Self

Like many fast-food companies, Steak ‘n Shake is also saving money when it comes to worker wages. Restaurant jobs aren’t notorious for paying well, but it also depends on what position you hold at the business. A Steak ‘n Shake team member currently makes around $11.79 an hour, according to Indeed. If you’re a shift manager, you make a bit more and a general manager makes about $18 an hour. The cooks’ hourly pay comes in at about $12, but there are insurance benefits available for team members, which is a major expense on the company’s side.

Steak ‘n Shake is also pivoting to a self-service model, which may help cut down on costs. It’s an effort to increase efficiency, and definitely impacted by the labor shortage and implications due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The company has already begun implementing self-service kiosks, which cuts down on the number of employees needed each shift.

The Best Ever Chicken Tender Recipe

I literally cracked a secret code in making chicken tenders crispy, juicy and flavorful. These Homemade Chicken Tenders are soaked in buttermilk and fried crisp are super flavorful, moist and extra crispy on the outside. Plus with spices like the kinds youd get at KFC they are perfect for replacing fast food cravings and even game day parties. Plus I have directions for an oven baked version too, so there can be no feeling guilty about indulging in this awesome chicken fingers recipe.

The addition of the KFC spices that I use in my potato wedges recipe takes these chicken fingers over the top. KFC always said their chicken was finger licking good, you will want to because this chicken, like my Ultimate Fried Chicken Recipe is that good.

Theyre golden brown fried chicken tenders made with either chicken breasts that you can slice into thinner chicken strips or you can use chicken tenderloin pieces and skip an extra step in the preparation.

If youre using a chicken breast you will cut it along its long side to make chicken strips the right length for these chicken tenders. If you cut the chicken strips the shorter way theyll be about 2-3 inches long and be closer to the size of an average fish stick.

There Is Still Grilled Chicken On The Menu

Though most people do not think of healthy food options when they think of Steak n Shake, it does have great healthy options.

This is its grilled chicken, which is not breaded, leaving it clean and nutritious.

The grilled chicken is typically found on the menu in the form of a sandwich, but Steak n Shake removed the chicken sandwiches from its menu. Despite this, you may still be able to find other grilled chicken options on the more reticent menu.

If calories arent a concern, Steak n Shake seems as though it will be keeping its chicken strips on the menu. These are very similar to the chicken fingers, though they are larger, flavored differently, and have more breading on the outside.

The Menu Is Filled With Highly Profitable Items

At STEAK AND SHAKE getting burgers, Onion rings and chicken tenders

Steak ‘n Shake’s Steakburgers and hand-dipped shakes might be its selling point, but they aren’t the most profitable. The burgers use a mix of ground round, sirloin, and T-bones, while milkshakes use premium ice cream. However, Steak ‘n Shake’s menu is also littered with more profitable items, such as coffee and soda, which often have high mark-ups.

Another guaranteed money maker restaurant chains love to offer is a kids menu, and Steak ‘N Shake is no different. The chain offers an extensive kids menu that includes mini portions of regular menu items like chicken fingers, Steakburgers, and hot dogs. However, despite the smaller portions, the price point per menu item remains between $4-5. It is important to note that the kids menu does include a drink, so that’s factored in, but the portions are significantly smaller. This makes it an easy way to increase profit margins.

Panko Breadcrumbs And Regular Breadcrumbs

If you would like to use panko breadcrumbs or regular breadcrumbs in this recipe to add more of a texture or crunch, like in a tempura recipe, you will have to reduce the flour to make up for the additional coating. Using breadcrumbs also allows you to bake this recipe instead of frying it .

If you fry the recipe with the use of the panko be aware the fat content of the recipe may be slightly higher as breadcrumbs tend to absorb more total fat than a flour based coating. Serve this meal up with some roasted vegetables for some additional dietary fiber to make up for it!

Slow Cooker Orange Chicken With Broccoli

Contributed by Sharon Myers

There are times when Im ready to order takeout because of a certain craving and I then realize I could probably make whatever it is at home. If only I had planned. One thing I have recognized over the years is that meal planning is my best option for not staring into my refrigerator after work or picking up the phone to place an order.

I do enjoy creating takeout meals at home, mainly because I can control the ingredients and flavors Im putting into the meal. Slow Cooker Orange Chicken With Broccoli is one of those meals that is now on regular rotation in our household, because it is so easy and tasty. Chicken is usually my go-to protein and adding orange juice really brightens up the flavor of this dish. The secret ingredient here is the orange marmalade, as it intensifies that orange flavor, and mixing that with soy sauce, some brown sugar, sesame oil and fresh ginger yum!

Another secret to this recipe is blanching the broccoli and adding it to the cooked mixture rather than cooking it in the crockpot. Blanching maintains the bright green color of the broccoli while also retaining some crispness of the broccoli, rather than becoming mush .

The Restaurant’s 4 For $4 Is An Amazing Deal

The biggest financial draw for customers to Steak ‘n Shake is its $4 menu. The offerings include three burger options, like the Double Steakburger and Bacon ‘n Cheese Single Steakburger, as well as chicken fingers. You really can’t beat getting a complete meal for less than $5. It’s especially surprising considering that the milkshakes, which are definitely big enough to be considered two portions, tend to ring up at just over $5 a piece. A milkshake is almost a meal in itself, so either option is an affordable way to fill your stomach with some diner grub.

The 4 for $4 has been around for years at Steak ‘N Shake, and is clearly something the chain widely is known for. In fact, back in 2013, some Colorado customers were surprised to see that the discounted menu items were being listed at $5 a piece. It apparently wasn’t profitable for franchisees to sell meals for $4, and many locations entered into a dispute with Biglari. Some franchisees settled, but it’s definitely a touchy subject. The meal deal is still a major part of Steak ‘n Shake’s national marketing, even though it might result in a financial loss on the company’s end.

After Culver’s The Next Fast

Steak ‘n Shake was founded in Illinois and became known for its milkshakes. Now the company has locations throughout the Midwest and the rest of the country, except New York.

During my stay in Chicago, I ordered Steak ‘n Shake to my hotel room. Although I didn’t get a chance to visit the physical restaurant, I did eat at a Steak ‘n Shake in Florida many years ago. The interiors are always decorated like an old-school diner, which I love.

Recipe Ingredients And Substitutions

  • Boneless chicken For the best results, use fresh chicken tenderloins. I do not recommend using frozen chicken for this baked panko chicken tenders recipe because moisture from the thawing chicken causes the breading to fall off.If you have frozen chicken tenders, you could use them for no-breading chicken recipes like Instant Pot chicken tenders, Blackened chicken tenders, or baked chicken tenderloins.
  • Melted butter If you need a butter substitute, any type of liquid fat such as olive oil can be used. Brushing it over the raw chicken tenderloins allows the Shake and Bake mixture to adhere.
  • Panko crumbs Use panko for the crispiest Shake n Bake chicken. Regular bread crumbs can be used, but your baked chicken tenderloins wont be as crispy.
  • Seasonings For the best flavor chicken, we use a simple but flavorful blend of onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, fine sea salt, and ground black pepper.

Want to make Shake n Bake chicken legs, or use other bone-in chicken?

Baked chicken tenders take less time to cook than bone-in chicken, but you can certainly use other chicken parts! Just be sure to use an instant-read cooking thermometer to be sure that the chicken is cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F. before removing it from the oven.

How To Make Shake And Bake Chicken In Air Fryer

  • To make Shake n Bake chicken in an air fryer, preheat the air fryer to 350° Fahrenheit. To help prevent the tenderloins from sticking, spray the fryer basket, or use a paper liner.
  • Add the chicken tenderloins to the air fryer basket. Then air fry the chicken breast tenderloins at 350°F. for 10-12 minutes.

Check that the internal temperature of the tenders reaches 165ºF with a meat thermometer before serving.

Why Are Steak And Shakes Going Out Of Business

Some of the sales decline can be attributed to Steak n Shake closing stores because of COVID-19 and plans to refranchise them. Last year, Biglari Holdings stepped in and paid off Steak n Shakes $152.5 million of debt, which led to a decline in the parent companys total investments to about $600 million.28 thg 2, 2022

Why Were The Steak N Shake Chicken Fingers Discontinued

Steak n Shake has discontinued its chicken fingers, enraging many of its loyal customers across the board. It did this as it has been giving its chain a fresh facelift by replacing and removing all kinds of classic menu items.

Though it has been doing this to try to improve its business structure, it has only succeeded in upsetting its customers. Especially when it comes to the chicken fingers, which were a fan favorite.

    Pin on Healthy Lunches
  • Prepare the chicken tenderloins.
  • Start by using a sharp knife to remove any visible fat from the chicken tenderloins. Then, place the chicken on a plate or a sheet of wax paper. Use a basting brush to apply melted butter or oil on all sides of the pieces.

  • Make the Shake and Bake chicken mixture.
  • Add the panko breadcrumbs and seasonings to a zip-top food storage bag, a dipping tray, or a plate. Then stir or shake to combine them.

  • Coat the chicken tenderloins.
  • If youre going to shake and bake , only place 4 chicken strips in the bag at a time. This ensures that every tender gets covered with breading.

  • Close and seal the bag, then shake to coat the tenders with the Shake and Bake chicken seasonings. Then, repeat with the rest of the chicken pieces.
  • If using a breading tray or plate, spread the Shake n Bake chicken seasoning mix into an even layer. Then, simply lay the chicken tenderloins into the mixture and gently press to help the mixture adhere.
