How To Cut Ribeye Steak

Depending on your grocery stores, some of them have pre-sliced ribeye steaks. I know that I recently found Trader Joes carrying some! Additionally, you can also ask your local butcher to slice it for you as well. However, if all else fails, getting razor thin slices of your ribeye steak is easy. For best results, place your steak in the freezer for at least an hour. This will firm up the steak and allow you to slice it better as opposed to it being in the refrigerator. Of course, it will also help you tremendously to use a super sharp knife!

Expert Tips For Thinly Slicing Beef:

Firstly, it is important to start with thinly sliced steak, the best way to get evenly thin slices is to use a ham slicer or Mandoline slicer. The secret is to freeze the beef before running it through a meat slicer. Freeze the steak in its original package for about 40 minutes to one hour depending on how thick your steak is. If youre starting with frozen beef, simply thaw it for about 1-2 hours until the edges soften and it is still partially frozen.

The key is to make it easy enough to slice, not make it rock solid or too soft because it will then get too rubbery when slicing. You can attempt to use a sharp knife, but slicing 2 pounds of frozen steak can get tiring so, invest in a mandoline slicer or ask the local butcher to use a deli slicer to cut your beef. Sometimes grocery stores have pre-sliced beef shavings available in the meat department.

The top-rated cheese choices for a Philly Cheesesteak sandwich are either Cheez Whiz , mild provolone cheese, or American cheese. You want a mildly flavored cheese with a good melting consistency. The Best Cut Of Beef For Cheesesteaks

Its important to use a cut of beef that does not require a long cooking time to get tender. Ribeye is a common choice but the cost is beyond what Im willing to spend, especially considering this recipe calls for 2½ to 3 pounds of beef.

My favorite cut of beef for this Philly Cheesesteak recipe is sirloin, specifically petite sirloin. Top sirloin is a wonderful choice but petite sirloin is less expensive and still plenty tender enough to create a fabulous Cheesesteak. Its also a thinner cut so there is a bit less slicing involved. Ive been able to pick up value packs of petite sirloin for less than $4 per pound at my local Safeway. You just cant beat that!

To get a closer look at petite sirloin and see this recipe in action, be sure to watch the video at the end of this post .

Youll need a good, sharp knife to slice the sirloin as thinly as possible against the grain. Once sliced, cut the beef into very small pieces.

Kitchen Tip

Place your sirloin in the freezer for 20 to 30 minutes to make it easier to slice.

Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich

Use the proper bread The bread you use is a huge part of the experience for any sandwich. And for a cheesesteak sandwich, you really need to use hoagie rolls. They have the right balance of sturdiness and squish, and hold the ingredients really well.

Cook the mushrooms in a really hot pan The difference between soggy mushrooms and nicely browned mushrooms is all about how hot the pan youre using is. Make sure its properly heated and that the mushrooms sizzle when you add them to the skillet.

Finish the cheesesteak sandwiches in the oven At the end we will tightly wrap each hoagie and then put them in the oven to melt the cheese and let the flavors meld. Everything in the sandwich is technically already cooked, but this last step really brings it all together and allows the flavors to soak into the bread.

How To Make Philly Cheesesteaks With Peppers And Onions

The process is easy! Youll need a large, deep sauté pan to start. If you dont have any large sauté pans, a Dutch oven will do the trick.

I love to add bell peppers and onions to add a burst of color and a ton of flavor to these tasty cheesesteaks.

Heat vegetable oil over MEDIUM-LOW heat and sauté thinly sliced onion and bell pepper. You want to avoid browning the peppers and onions so if they do begin to brown, reduce the heat under the pan a bit. When they are nice and tender, transfer them to a large dish and set aside.

Add additional oil to the pan and then add half of the chopped sirloin to the hot pan. Season with a little Lawrys Seasoned Salt, or your favorite all-purpose seasoning, and a little garlic pepper. Cook and stir until browned and then transfer this first batch of browned beef to the dish with the peppers and onions.

Repeat the process with the remaining beef and seasoning. Transfer the second batch of browned beef to the dish and drain any juices from the pan.

Return the pan to the heat and transfer the cooked veggies and beef to the pan. Place sliced provolone over the top and cover the pan to allow the cheese to melt

Use tongs to mix the melted cheese throughout the beef and veggie mixture and its time to load up those hoagie rolls!

Why Is Philly Known For Cheesesteaks

According to Philadelphias official tourism site, Pat Olivieri invented the cheesesteak in the 1930s. What To Serve With

The top side dishes that we usually choose to have are:

  • Coke or Root Beer

Have you noticed how burgers are usually eaten with a side of French Fries? Its a classic pairing because they complement each other. Well, crispy and salty french fries are delicious not just with burgers but also with this Philly cheesesteak sandwich.

Coleslaw, on the other hand, works well as a side dish because its light and refreshing. An American restaurant with international franchising called Hooters serves the sandwich with a side of coleslaw on its menu.

The potential guilt you feel will be offset by the vegetables in the coleslaw. We believe that there shouldnt be guilt in the first place though, especially if you eat in moderation.

If you’re in the mood for a drink, we recommend a milkshake. Make sure to get a heavy, creamy one to achieve maximum satisfaction. You can check out our recipe of how to make the perfect milkshake at home. This is an ultimate cheat meal as this combination will set you back more than 1000 calories. But whos counting, right?

For a lighter but equally satisfying drink, we recommend either Coke or root beer. Add ice cream to your root beer and you instantly have root beer float. It’s pretty much like the milkshake with a slightly lower indulgent score.

There are other side dishes you can choose to pair with the Philly Cheesesteak. For example, you could also have cheese sticks, onion rings, or potato wedges. The list goes on.

How To Thinly Slice The Meat

phily cheese steak sandwich â Foodetc cooks â food, recipes and travel

To achieve the best results with the ribeye steak, you need to make sure that the meat is sliced thinly. One way to do this is by freezing the steak for about 30 minutes before slicing it.

This allows you to easily slice through the steak as thinly as possible. Of course, youll also need a sharp knife that can do the hard work for you.

In most butcher shops or grocery stores, they can also slice the meat for your Philly cheesesteak. In our experience, they do this at no extra cost, so make sure to ask!
