Combine all of the ingredients together in a small bowl or jar.
Store in a mason jar or airtight container, in the pantry, for up to 6 months. While the seasoning mix will stay good in the pantry for much longer than 6 months, after 6 months, the spices will begin to lose their flavor.
Thats why I recommend labeling the steak seasoning with a date and trying to use up the seasoning mix within 6 months. In my house, we double this recipe and its easily gone in a month, so I dont think youll have a problem using it all up!

What Is It Made Of
Montreal Steak Seasoning is a combination of the following 6 spices.
- Coarse Kosher Salt
- Coarse Ground Black Pepper
- Paprika while I use a mild paprika to make this steak seasoning, if youd like to add a little smokiness to the flavor, feel free to use smoked paprika instead.

1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon coarse kosher salt |
1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon dried minced garlic |
1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes |
Steps:
- Cook peppercorns, mustard seeds, dill seeds, and coriander seeds in a small skillet over medium heat, stirring, until fragrant and beginning to pop, about 2 minutes. Transfer to a mortar and pestle and coarsely crush, or transfer to a sturdy resealable plastic bag and coarsely crush with the bottom of a heavy skillet. Add salt, garlic, and chile flakes and crush to combine.

- Spice rub can be made 1 month ahead. Store in an airtight container.
How To Use
Montreal seasoning is a classic seasoning for steaks. When using, make sure to bring the steak to room temperature by taking it out of the refrigerator 30 to 60 minutes beforehand. Add the seasoning immediately before cooking if put on too far in advance, the salt will draw water out of the meat and make for a dry steak.
The spice rub can also be used on chicken, pork, or salmon. It’s also a great seasoning for potatoes, including french fries, baked potatoes, hash browns, and potato puffs. Steamed, grilled, or roasted vegetables such as broccoli, mushrooms, and zucchini taste great with it, too.
Montreal steak seasoning can also be made into a marinade. Add 1/2 teaspoon of the mix to 1/4 cup oil, 1/4 cup water, and 2 tablespoons vinegar.
