The Best Potatoes For Steak Fries
I generally prefer russet potatoes for classic french fries, but for steak fries, only Yukon Gold potatoes will do. Yukon Golds thin skin allows the potatoes to be cut into wedges unpeeled and crisps up in the oven along with the potatoes. But the best part of Yukon Gold potatoes are their tender, sweet flesh which bakes up into the creamy and dreamy interior of these steak fries. Look for four medium potatoes that are comparable in size and shape. Longer potatoes make for more slender steak fries.
I enjoy frying food at home despite its reputation as a messy, stinky endeavor, but I find when you roast potatoes slowly they actually become creamier. Oven-roasted steak fries rival their fried counterparts in crispiness, but they wont be quite as evenly golden-brown as the fried version.
For Your Information
- Roast these Yukon Gold potato wedges at 400°F for a total of 35 to 40 minutes, flipping them about halfway through.
- Choose a high-heat-tolerant oil for coating the fries, such as an everyday olive oil or avocado oil.
Wash And Slice The Potatoes For Your Steak Fries
Unlike with most french fries, you don’t need to peel the skin off of the potatoes to make steak fries. To get started, wash the potatoes thoroughly using only water. Since the skin remains intact, washing the potatoes is really necessary. This step is simple yet vital as it removes any dirt particles from the surface. Immediately after washing the potatoes, head onto the cutting board and slice them into large wedges.

Ingredients You Need For The Perfect Pan
To make perfect pan-fried steak, you don’t need many ingredients. You can create the perfect meal using only the basics. Here are all of the ingredients that you need to prepare the steak:
- 1-2 tbsp. of extra-virgin olive oil
- Your steak cut of choice
Finally, to achieve the perfect, crisp crust, you’ll want to cook a steak using cast iron. Non-stick Teflon or copper pans won’t hold the flavor from the fat or deliver the same crispy sensation.
Lets Make Those Crispy Steak Fries
Step 1: To get your fries soft and creamy in the middle you want to first microwave them for 5 minutes. I love this microwave steamer for precooking vegetables.
Step 2: Preheat your cookie sheet with oil in the oven before putting the fries on it. Set your oven to 450º F. Use a large cookie sheet and add a couple tablespoons of oil and put the pan in the oven while its heating up.
When the oven is preheated and the potatoes have been microwaved, swirl the oil around the pan so that every inch is coated and then scatter the potatoes evenly on the cookie sheet. Sprinkle salt and pepper over them or any kind of spices you like. Pop the potatoes in the oven and roast for 30 minutes. Take them out and try to flip them.
Turn up the heat for the last 10 minutes.
Step 3: Turn up the heat to 525º F and cook for 10 minutes more. At this point you want to check them and make sure they dont burn. Every oven cooks differently and I wouldnt want you to end up with the Perfect Burnt Steak Fries.
And above is what they look like after they are done. They are so good let me tell you. They are not as crisp the next day but would be great for breakfast as home fries if you cut them up.
If you are fry aficionado and enjoy them as much as we do, I think you are going to love this recipe. Thanks for stopping by and I hope you enjoy!

Perfectly Roasted Steak Fries
These perfectly seasoned and roasted Yukon potatoes make the best thick and crispy steak fries. They are an easy side dish for most any entrée serve with ketchup or a dipping sauce on the side.
Steak fries are thick wedges of potatoes that have been roasted at a high temperature to a crispy perfection. Because steak fries are thicker than regular french fries, they require just a little more attention to get the ideal crispy outside while maintaining a soft inside.
I find that the best steak fries arent fried, but are better off oven roasted. They are an easy side dish to burgers, steak, chicken or fish.

Why Do They Call Them Steak Fries
The French dish Steak Frites is very common and popular in France. Although thought to originate in Belgium, the French made steak fries a household name.
Add some additional Parmesan cheese and garnish with extra minced parsley to make it look extra pretty. Serve with a yummy dip, like my Smokey Chipotle Dipping Sauce, or my Healthy Greek Yogurt Ranch Dip. Theyre pretty fantastic just by themselves, too!
Substitutes For Some Of The Air Fryer Fries Ingredients
In wellness coach and creator Miriam Hahn’s recipe, avocado oil spray is used because of its higher smoke point. You can follow her preference for guilt-free steak fries, but you can also use an alternative. “Any type of spray will work, or you can toss them in about two teaspoons of oil,” says Hahn. “The spray saves a step and another bowl.”
As for the potatoes, you can also change them up. “You can use any kind of potatoes. However, if you use sweet potatoes, the cooking time varies, and they won’t be as crispy,” explains Hahn. You also have the freedom to use other spices. Hahn suggests using “chili powder and smoked paprika.”

How To Make Frozen Steak Fries In The Air Fryer
I used a 28 ounce bag of frozen fries, and cooked them in two batches. I didn’t use cooking spray, because I have a nonstick basket and the fries didn’t stick at all.
Place the fries in the basket, without stacking or overlapping. Cook the fries at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 12 minutes. Shake the basket halfway through cooking. Depending on the air fryer, the actual cooking time may vary.

Homemade Air Fryer Steak Fries Recipe
Potatoes are one of the best comfort food vegetables, while also being so versatile. Many prefer french fries as their potato side of choice. And why not? They’re tasty, easy to make, and kids of all ages adore them. And within the world of fries, there are also various types to explore, including the classic thinner french fry and the much more hearty steak fry. The latter is a variant of the former, but they’re actually cooked differently.
French fries are usually deep-fried, while steak fries are baked, which might make them a healthier alternative to the deep-fried classic. However, steak fries usually also contain oil in their recipes. But today, thanks to the air fryer, you can now enjoy any kind of fries without worrying about too much excess oiliness.
This recipe developed by Miriam Hahn, a certified wellness coach from YouCare-SelfCare uses a touch of avocado oil spray , which limits excess fat and overheating while still providing the crunch and taste we all expect from our fries.
“I use avocado oil spray because it has a high smoke point making it the healthier choice,” says Hahn. Overheating oils can release chemicals that have been linked to neurological disorders, and of course, an odd, burnt taste can also develop. So, do make sure you pick an oil with a high smoke point when making fries.

Best Potato For Steak Fries
Russet potatoes, known as baking potatoes, are the recommended potato for making the best steak fries. Russets cook up crisper than waxy potatoes such as Yukon gold potatoes and baby reds. This recipe could be attempted with sweet potatoes as well, but that would take the flavor in a completely different direction.
How To Make Steak Fries
The best thick cut steak fries are dusted with flour. Why? The flour mixes with the seasonings and oil and turns crispy while baking.
Make sure you cut the thick wedges of potato evenly. If some fries are fatter than others the cooking time required will be inconsistent. I recommend using 4 large potatoes that are similar in size and shape. It makes it easier to make consistent cuts.
Once cut, add them to a large bowl with the oil and seasonings and toss to evenly coat. As soon as the oven is preheated you are ready to bake!
Tip: For perfect steak fries every time, I prefer to bake them on parchment paper. It makes for easier cleanup, but most importantly they don’t stick!

What’s The Best Steak For Pan
You’ll have the best results using the pan-searing technique if you select a boneless steak between 1 and 1 1/2 inches thick. Well get into cuts in just a bit, but we generally recommend using thicker cuts like a New York strip steak or a boneless ribeye. When you use a thicker steak with more fat, it’s more likely to stay juicy when you cook it.
Steaks that appear to have a lot of white saturated fat running through the meat at the best for this cooking technique.
Your best bet is to splurge on the best steak that you can get. Although it costs more than other meats, it will still be cheaper to cook steak on your own then it would be eating at an upscale steakhouse.

Making Homemade Steak Fries From Scratch
If you have time, you can also make air fryer steak fries from scratch. The directions and cooking times are very similar to our traditional air fryer Homemade Potato Wedges, or our Seasoned French Fries. You will begin with by peeling, then rinsing four Russet potatoes. Then, cut them into ½ inch strips the length of the potatoes.
Soak the French fries in cold water for 25-30 minutes. This will remove the starch content and make them crispy.
After they have soaked, drain water and pat dry with paper towels, then return them to the bowl. Next, coat potatoes with a tablespoon virgin olive oil. Seasonings are optional, but if you want them seasoned, follow our potato wedges recipe. We just season with salt or garlic powder.
Spread the fries into the air fryer basket, without overlapping. Work in batches if necessary. Once it is filled, return the basket to the air fryer and cook fries at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 20-25 minutes. During the cooking process, shake the basket at the 10 minute mark.
When cooking steak fries, depending on the thickness of your cut, cook time may vary, so you may need to add 2-3 extra minutes for cooking time.

The Secret To Converting Oven Recipes To Easy Air Fryer Recipes
Check the label for Oven Directions. Whatever the oven temperature is, decrease it by 25 degrees. If the recommended temperature is 425 degrees, reduce that to 400 degrees. Now, for how much time to cook the food in question. Simply take the recommended time and decrease it by 20%. If the total time is 20 minutes, the new time will be 16 minutes. I like to divide that time in half and flip whatever I am making halfway through the total cooking
How To Cut Steak Fries:
In order to cut potatoes into wedges, I like to cut each potato in half, then cut those pieces in half to get quarters, then cut those quarters in half, then cut those pieces in half, for a total of 16 pieces per potato. You can see the progression here from left to right:
For a standard russet potato, I find that the 16 piece cut has the perfect thickness to it. If you have smaller russet potatoes that come in those bulk bags, you may want to cut less.
Once the potatoes are cut, add the seasonings and a couple tablespoons of oil:
Any high heat roasting oil will work, like a light olive oil, avocado oil, or vegetable oil.
Toss the potatoes well so they are evenly coated in the oil and seasonings. I find my hands work best for that, rather than a spatula.
Then spread them onto a sheet pan in a single layer:
Its important that the fries arent piled up on top of each other, and they have room to brown.
Bake the fries for 20 minutes on the first side, until they look golden brown on the edges:
Now flip the fries over and bake for another 5-10 minutes, until more thoroughly golden brown and crisp:
Then you can sprinkle them with a little extra salt, and either enjoy them as is, or serve with ketchup, chipotle mayo, or aioli.

Other Ways To Cook Them
My recipe is designed to use in the oven, but there is no reason you can’t deep fry these instead. I would deep fry in 350 degree oil until golden brown and tender.
Alternatively, you could use an air fryer instead, but it will likely take just as long as the oven. Approximately 20-25 minutes at 400 degrees.
What Air Fryer Do You Use
We actually have 3 air fryers. I have a smaller one from Phillips that we started with. I have since given that to my son since hes only cooking for 1.
But the more I used the air fryer I realized I really wanted a digital screen. It wasnt any more expensive, in fact- our XL air fryer from GoWISE was less expensive than the Phillips and I love its ease & extra functions.
Plus it comes with a lot of the extra accessories I like to use when cooking with my fryer.
But I when I started working on my second air fryer book, I wanted to change things up. I picked up this Chefman 6.3 Quart Digital Air Fryer+ Rotisserie, Dehydrator, Convection Oven. It has 8 Touch Screen Presets & Accessories Included. It is XL Family Size, which is great!

What Is Steak Seasoning
My steak fries have an extra steak element to themsteak seasoning. Steak seasoning, a.k.a. Montreal steak seasoning, is one of my new favorite seasoning blends. Its a chunky blend of salt, pepper, red pepper, garlic, and sometimes other spices. The chunky nature of this blend gives you little pops of flavor as you eat the fries and also adds a little bit of delicious crunch. I love this stuff!
How To Cut Steak Fries
Its important to cut your fries roughly the same size. I cut down the middle length-wise and then cut each half into four pieces length-wise. This gives you 8 fries per potato. I also use Russet potatoes and I havent tried other kinds so I cant tell you if they will come out the same.
After you cut your fries, microwave them for 5 minutes before baking.
