Help Your Hamburger Steaks Cook Evenly With This Technique

How to Make Hamburger Steak with Onions and Gravy | Beef Recipes | Allrecipes.com

The reason we shape them into doughnut shapes is that it helps the hamburger meat to cook more evenly and as they cook and shrink up that hole gets filled up anyway.

Take your hamburger patties and dip each side in the flour. Toss with flour to coat. The flour acts as a binder but also gives a crispier version of the burger when done.

Add those patties to a large skillet that is on medium heat.

NOTE: You may want to add a tablespoon or two of oil to the skillet and let it heat beforehand if you have a really low-fat ground beef or if your nonstick skillet isnt quite as nonstick as it used to be.

Let those brown for a few minutes on each side.

Then add your sliced onions to the pan. Cook those until they start getting a bit soft and brown on the edges.

At this point, you can drain off and discard the grease if you like.

Now pour in your beef broth . Im only using about a cup here.

Cover and let cook for another ten minutes or so, until your patties are cooked completely through and no longer pink in the center.

When your hamburger steaks are done theyll look something like this picture above.

Now, I like to scoop out my hamburger steaks and then get my onions out with a slotted spoon to serve.

I thought a service like this was going to be expensive, but it ends up being very reasonable, especially for meat humanely raised.

What Onion Is Best For Making Gravy

In our house, the yellow onion reigns supreme. There are different options for different flavors, but the sweetness of the yellow onion is what I find myself grabbing most often. I like that it, in the words of my husband, doesn’t bite back as much as the white onion.

For a rich gravy, you may prefer a white onion, but I think the yellow onion mellows out the meal nicely and pairs well with the richness of the fattier beef. So, for me, the yellow onion is one to choose, but you can use any onion you have on hand for this gravy. Minor changes in flavor will still be delicious over this hamburger steak.

Using Shredded Butter In Burger Meat

Incorporating butter into the beef is a chef secret to keep the patties nice and juicy. When meat cooks, the proteins tighten and contract and in doing so, moisture escapes. This can result in tough bricks of meat. The butter in the patties steam as they cook which helps maintain the moisture of the protein.

Its important that the butter is about the same temperature and shape as the ground beef pieces are. The best way to achieve this is to shred frozen butter. This way, even a very well-done burger can still be juicy!

Types Of Sauces For Hamburger Steak

In Japan, there are many sauces such as tomato sauce, demi-glace sauce, and shariapin sauce, as well as Japanese-style sauces such as teriyaki sauce and soy sauce-based sauce with grated radish.

The sauce of the hamburger steak from The Way of The Househusband seems tomato-based one. In this recipe, I added red wine to the ketchup-based sauce for richness and soy sauce to give it a Japanese flavor.

What Is The Difference Between Salisbury Steak And Hamburger Steak

hamburger recipe

A Salisbury steak contains more fillers such as breadcrumbs, sauces, onions and an egg whereas a hamburger steak only contains salt and pepper. They are very similar and may not have a difference at all depending on the recipe itself. Hamburger steak is usually served with a hamburger bun or a type of bread. A Salisbury steak can be served on its own or with other sides to make it a meal. They are very similar and cooked the same way when cooked with a gravy mixture.

What Is Butcher Box

ButcherBox is a meat subscription service that sources the highest quality beef, pork, lamb, chicken and seafood and ships directly to your door. Every month a beautiful box of frozen meat arrives at the door, and always includes a few pounds of grass fed ground beef. I change my box every month, but always have ground beef, Italian Sausage and rib eye steak in my selection.

What Types Of Ground Beef Are Best

Any type of ground beef will work but I like to cook with either the ground chuck or ground sirloin. Both chuck and sirloin work as the patties will not stick to the skillet and they do not produce an excess amount of fat. Butter works best with the flour when making a roux so keeping the beef fat to minimum works best.

So if time is becoming very precious yet you love the idea of making home cooked delicious lip smacking good recipes for your family than this Hamburger Steak with Country Gravy is right up your alley. Your family will be singing your praises and asking for more.
