Last time we looked at the best food franchises to buy in 2021, we had to start by considering whether buying a food franchise was even a good idea in the current economic environment. With certain delivery and take-out concepts booming, we started by looking at pizza franchises for sale.

In this post, we’ll look at some of the best fast food franchises for sale, focusing on sandwich-based formats.

Sandwich franchises have seen mixed performance in 2020, with some like Capriotti’s reporting strong Q2 sales while others have been forced to change concepts or search for more drive-through/take-out friendly locations. Below, we highlight the sandwich franchises that we believe are best poised for steady performance in the new normal era:

    Arby’s

Arby’s has been franchising since 1965, and the company has seen more than its share of economic ups and downs. You might be surprised to learn that it’s the second-largest sandwich franchise in the world, operating 3,400 restaurants in eight countries. With such a strong foundation, Arby’s franchisees will benefit from continued support from a well-established operating model and known brand. Auction Alert The Original Quaker Steak & Lube

My heart sank when I clicked on this reader-submitted auction tip and realized it was for the original Quaker Steak and Lube restaurant in Sharon, Pennsylvania. Quaker Steak opened in 1974 in a barely-altered Quaker State service station, and became a go-to destination for motorheads from as far away as Pittsburgh and beyond. I am pleased and relieved to report that the restaurant remains in operation! The auction is set to empty a warehouse of overflow memorabilia now owned by PennDOT, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, and includes the shells of two Corvettes. Both are listed as 1988 models though one is clearly a C3. Thanks to Alexander M. for spotting the auction here on equipmentone.com.

Bidding on this C3 Corvette shell sits at $555 with nine days before the auctions close. On the occasion of my first wedding anniversary I called Hertz in Pittsburgh for a Premium Rental: a Chrysler LeBaron GTS convertible. My wife and I enjoyed a top-down cruise and a lovely dinner at the Quaker Steak and Lube. We parked the dark metallic green LeBaron next to a new Jaguar XK8 convertible in BRG and tan nearly our Chryslers twin. I remember the vast selection of chicken wing options and the 1936 Chevy that had been driven into a bay and raised on a lift, where it remained permanently enshrined above the diners.

    SPONSORED CONTENT

What are the most important factors when deciding to invest in either a quick-service restaurant franchise or a full-service concept?

First-time franchisees often look to QSR brands because of the simplified business model they commonly operate. On the other side of the coin, those with restaurant industry backgrounds recognize the higher earning potential of operating full-service restaurant franchises.

The advantages of owning a full-service restaurant concept outweigh perceived barriers to entry, particularly when prospective franchisees consider the benefits a brand like Quaker Steak & Lube can offer. Here are just a few:

    Restaurant Franchise Profit Margins

QSR Magazine put together a Top 50 list of quick-service concepts and the average unit sales they generate. For the top 10 concepts, the average sales per unit are roughly $1,391,629 per year. Across the fast-food industry, the average profit margin hovers around 3 percent.

As a result, the actual profit the average QSR franchisee would take home at the end of the year is close to $42,000. Average annual profit margins and unit volumes vary among different QSR concepts, but the industry average demonstrates the slimness of margin many operators must face.

    Experience Over Transaction

Restaurant franchise brands that deliver experience, value, and convenience are in the best position to attract and retain millennialsand other demographics with similar priorities.

Q& a With Bruce Lane Vice President Of Operations And Franchise Services At Quaker Steak & Lube

Published on March 8, 2019in Fast Casual Restaurant Franchise, Q & A Interview

In this exclusive Q& A, we get to learn more about Quaker Steak & Lube from Bruce Lane, the companys vice president of operations and franchise services.

Franchise Chatter : Can you please share a bit of background on the Quaker Steak & Lube concept including its founding story?

Bruce Lane : In 1974, the United States experienced its first major gas crisis. The price of gasoline was off the charts and gas stations across the country were closing their doors. Carmakers began exploring new ways to develop vehicles that got better gas mileage and people across the country began leaving behind their gas guzzler cars for more fuel-efficient options.

Where many people saw impractical vehicles, founders George Warren III and Gary Meszaros saw opportunity. So was born Quaker Steak & Lube, a Cook Your Own Steak restaurant in Mercer County, Pennsylvania that opened in an old filling station and gave some abandoned classic and muscle cars a permanent home, including a 1936 Chevrolet, frozen in time on the original hydraulic grease rack.

FC: Can you tell us a little bit about your professional background before joining Quaker Steak & Lube?

BL: I originally started my food service career at McDonalds as an hourly manager in my early 20s. As I continued my career at the famous chain, I rose through the ranks and eventually landed the position of General Manager at a franchise location in Louisiana.
