Why Is Aldi Meat So Cheap
One of the main reasons that Aldi meat is so cheap is that they dont sell name-brand products. Also, they source meat locally and are able to save on transport-related expenses. Lastly, they do not have in-house butchers, so lower labor costs mean lower prices.
So Aldi just sells brands youve never heard of before.
It doesnt mean the quality is any less. It just means that they can sell you a quality product at a lower price. But, you will see some of the same meat products sold at Aldi at Walmart too. .

Aldi is committed to sourcing locally. Again, they pass those savings along to the consumer.
They have limited supply. They advertise their fresh meat specials two weeks in advance, and when they are out, they are out.
This means that they are not throwing away as much food as other grocery stores.

Is There Horse Meat In Aldis Beef
You might have heard a rumor that there is horse meat in Aldis beef.
This is based on a scandal from 2013, where it was found that Aldi as well as several other grocery stores sold a frozen meal product where the beef supplier had included horse meat as much as 100 percent in some instances, and as low as 30 percent in others.
This did not affect US customers, however, but its the kind of story that sticks. Everyone pointed fingers, the product was immediately pulled and Aldi released an angry statement condemning their suppliers.
So yes, while there was a horse meat incident in 2013, the situation was immediately rectified and there have been no similar occasions since. Shoppers can rest assured that there is no horse meat in Aldis beef.

Steakhouse Sizzle At An Aldi Price
With the long Memorial Day weekend behind us, the grilling season is officially under way. Many American consumers have excavated their grills from the garage, pressure washed their patios and spent the weekend shopping for hot dogs, burgers and, mmmmmm, steaks.
What could be more American than a New York Strip Steak charred to perfection on the grill? Apparently, nothing. American consumption of red meat is forecast to hit 236 pounds per person in 2019, up from 222 pounds in 2018 and 210.2 pounds in 1998, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Thats the highest amount of meat consumption within the last 50 years.
Memorial Day Weekend usually supercharges meat sales at grocery stores, as shoppers buy food from every corner of the store, but especially fresh departments, for their summer grilling menus. The numbers for 2019 arent in yet, but shoppers spent an average of $87 at grocery stores during Memorial Day Weekend 2018. The biggest spending day of the 2018 weekend was Saturday, when spending was 21% higher than average. These days, Memorial Day shoppers are looking for value more than ever, which means shopping carts are full of private label products, especially from fresh departments.
Part of the credit for all of that private label success goes to the entry of discounters such as Batavia, Ill.-based ALDI, which has warmed American consumers to the idea that private label products can offer tremendous quality and value.
Does Aldi Butcher Its Own Beef
Another way Aldi keeps its beef prices lower than, say, the aforementioned Wegmans, is because they do not employ butchers.
Butchers are actually specially trained in the art of cutting, dressing, storing, and displaying meat, and while they are desirable in many grocery stores, Aldi stores are known for their smaller staff size.
The concept of employing a butcher, therefore, is outside of Aldis business model.
So while you will likely pay less for that stew meat or those cube steaks, you wont be able to ask for specialty cuts or make special requests, like you would at Wegmans or a local butcher.

Usda Choice Ribeye Steak
Over the last two weeks, weve tested two of Aldis Regular Buy steaks. The first, the Cattlemans Ranch Bacon Wrapped Chuck Tender Filet, was the cheapest of the lot and was about on par with the price. The second, the USDA Choice Top Sirloin, was a step up in taste but was not a terribly tender steak, either.
That brings us, at last, to the Ribeye.
Its the most expensive Regular Buy steak weve seen to date, running about $9 a pound. This is competitive, if not lower, than grocery stores around here, although we encourage people to price-shop on beef, since some people report cheaper cuts elsewhere, especially during sales.
Its also the most premium cut of beef weve seen in Aldis Regular Buy section. Ribeyes are one of the better steaks you can buy , with a rich flavor that comes from the steaks fatty, marbled composition. That composition does, however, come with one drawback: it can lead to flare-ups in some lower-end grills. If your grill is prone to flare-ups, we recommend keeping a close eye on this steak.
The steak was, in our view, absolutely outstanding. The meat was tender, with an easy cut. And the fat, a signature of any ribeye, did wonders to give it a rich taste. A bit of butter on top and we were in heaven.
Does Aldi Sell Usda Beef
Yes. Aldi sells USDA beef. Most of their steaks are USDA Choice and Black Angus. USDA choice is the mid-level grade for the USDAs grading. Aldis ground meats, however, are not usually USDA labeled. This typically means lower quality beef but at lower prices.
Ultimately, you will get the same quality beef at Aldi that youll get at any other mainstream grocery store.
What you wont get is a huge selection or the ability to talk to a butcher or get a butcher to trim a steak or do a custom cut for you.

The grading system determines the quality rating based on the amount of marbling in the muscle and the age of the beef. Marbling is basically fat, and a fattier cut of meat means more fat rendering out of the steak as it cooks.
Traditionally a fattier cut of meat is richer and more flavorful.
There are three USDA grades of beef that you would buy from the supermarket. From highest to lowest, they are:
The highest quality of meat is USDA Prime.
It is the most tender and flavorful cut of meat. It is also hard to find and usually reserved for high-end restaurants. You may be able to find it at other supermarkets but at a premium price.
It has a high ratio of marbling and is the most tender.
The meat you get from Aldi is likely USDA Choice. It is the second-highest grade, and has less marbling and is generally less tender. Less marbling also means less flavor and juice.

Usda Choice Strip Steak
The USDA Choice Strip Steak is a solid, if unspectacular, entry in the lineup of Aldi steaks. Falling in the midpoint between the dubious chuck filet and excellent ribeye, the strip steak is worth considering if you need a moderately tender cut without the ribeyes flare-ups. Its also a good choice for recipes, like fajitas, that call for cuts like this one. Recommended.

No. Aldi meat does not come from China. Most of the beef sold in the US, by Aldi or otherwise, is produced and packaged in the US. 90% of the imported beef comes from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, or Mexico. The same goes for pork.
Aldi gets a number of its items from China, so its not a stretch to wonder if they get their meat from China, too.
Many of the Aldi Finds items, like hiking boots, exercise equipment, kitchen mats, and toys, come from China. They also run a couple of grocery stores in China.
But consumers especially like to know where their food comes from.
United States labeling requirements require that products made outside of the US are clearly labeled with their country of origin. This includes food.

How Is Aldis Meat Quality
Aldis meat quality is mixed. While it sells grass-fed organic meat, most ground beef is not labeled with a USDA grade, meaning its lower quality. It also has a tendency to be overground, making it a little mealy. Their steaks, however, are mostly Black Angus USDA Choice, and of good quality.
Aldis ground beef is not great for burgers, but it will work for meatloaf. Especially if you season it well.
The biggest problem with Aldi meat is that the selection can be inconsistent. So if you find something you love, you may not see it again for a while. I do, however, like that Aldi has a clear Animal Welfare Policy.
Sometimes youll even find organic, grass-fed beef at Aldi.
Organically grown beef simply means that the food the cows eat isnt treated with pesticides and that no artificial hormones or antibiotics are given to the cows.
Then grass-fed simply means the cow was fed grass rather than grains. And while organically-grown and grass-fed are often lumped together, one doesnt automatically mean the other.
But Aldi actually sells grass-fed, organic beef. This means that its probably going to be more expensive than the other meat youll find at Aldi. It also means it is going to be some of the best quality of meat youll find at Aldi.
One thing youll likely never see at Aldi are USDA Prime steaks.
Only about 5% of all beef graded by the USDA qualifies for the Prime distinction. Prime is generally reserved for high-end restaurants.
