What Is A Top Sirloin Steak
The Top Sirloin steak comes from the sirloin primal of the cow. It is one section up from the round primal which is the back end of the cow. Beyond the sirloin is the short loin, rib, then chuck.
The sirloin is not as tender as beef from the short loin primal but it is more tender than from the round. This is why it makes for a good value steak. To Sirloin is not quite as tender as the more desired cuts from the short loin.
The sirloin primal itself can be divided into 2 sections – top and bottom. Clearly the top sirloin is cut from the top portion of the sirloin. The bottom sirloin is where Tri-Tip comes from.
Top Sirloin steaks can be cut further into Top Sirloin Filet steaks. These are the most tender parts of the sirloin and looks like tenderloin. It can be a good replacement for tenderloin, but I don’t find it sold at too many places.

Recently, I found myself driving from the Jersey Shore to a backyard poolside cookout in South Jersey. I needed to pick up quality steaks for my friends grill I was doing the buying, and he was doing the cooking and as I was left with few options , I diverted to the Whole Foods in Marlton. A Whole Foods steak must be a good steak, I assumed.
There, past shelves filled with sacks of quinoa and tins of sustainable tuna, I found the meat department and its piles of bloody Whole Foods steaks and roasts, manned by facial-haired 20-and-30-somethings that looked like they all drank Pabst and played in some band together after hours.
With four adults and four children to feed, I ordered two bone-in rib-eyes and two t-bones for the grownups, and eight ultra-thin-cut bone-in pork chops for the kids.
I didnt pay much attention to the prices until I arrived in front of the cashier, who announced how much money I owed her: a whopping $96 for the four steaks and eight tiny chops.
Now, I dont mind spending big bucks on great food, but in this case, the food turned out not to be great by any stretch of the imagination.
I realize that a lot of what youre paying for at Whole Foods is the ethical treatment of the animal that you wind up shoving down your throat, chased with a big old swig of Bordeaux, but the food should also taste expensive, right?

Recommended Steaks To Order Online
If you are looking to buy steaks online for yourself or for a very lucky gift recipient, there are options a plenty out there. The one I would recommend is the Chicago Steak Company. I love the Chicago Steak company because…
1. They sell quality steaks that are either prime or top choice steaks including Ribeye. Their steaks are either wet aged or dry aged for improved flavor.
2. They educate people about steaks. Their Steak University site has a lot of helpful information on steaks.
I am always about finding a good deal on steaks. I am seen deals for free shipping and/or free steak burger and around special occasions like Father’s Day. Check out the steaks from Chicago Steak Company.
Other Steaks With The Sirloin Name
There are other steaks that have the name sirloin in them – Petite sirloin, sirloin tips, etc. These cuts are not as tender and as prized as the top sirloin. They may require different cooking methods. For this post we are just taking about top sirloin steaks.
Here are some prices I collected from stores around Ann Arbor, Michigan.

What Does It Taste Like
As an effect of the drying procedure, the dry-aged beef’s flavor becomes more intense and rich, especially when left to dry for more than 30 days. This dry-age change in taste is a significant reason why people prefer these types of aged meat. An appropriately dry-aged beef will have a buttery and tender texture and beefier flavor.

Is Organic Beef Grass
Organic beef does not necessarily mean it was grass-fed.
Organic means that the animal was not given added hormones or antibiotics or pesticides in the food. The feed can be grass, corn or soy .
Grass-fed meat means that the animal was pasture-raised and was not fed corn or soy. Grass-fed meat is often organic, but organic does not necessarily mean grass-fed.
Because cattle that are fed grain are inherently less healthy, organic does not necessarily mean better. Studies show that grain-fed cattle have unhealthy omega 6 to omega 3 fats. They have higher saturated fat and tend to be pro-inflammatory.
Grass-fed cattle have a much healthier omega 6 to omega 3 fat ratio.
They also tend to contain more vitamins, are less likely to have E. coli, less saturated fat, and fewer calories than commercial grain-fed meat.
So, if you are looking to purchase the healthiest steak, look for organic grass-fed beef with a USDA rating of at least Choice.
Grades Of Beef And Prime Beef
One thing I wanted to point out is that Costco carry some prime beef. Most grocery stores don’t sell prime beef. Generally all you will find is choice beef, but some select in really cheap stores, but for the most part prime beef is used in restaurants.

Did I Answer Everything You Want To Know About Purchasing Steak At The Grocery Store
In this article, we went over all the things you need to know about purchasing steak at the grocery store.
We went over what makes a great steak.
Then we talked about what supermarkets have the best quality meat and how to pick a steak at the grocery store. We also went over USDA meat grades and the differences between grass-fed and grain-fed beef.
Of course, we also talked about what makes one steak better than another.
Then we looked at which supermarkets have the best quality meat and how to pick a steak at the grocery store. We answered all the top questions too, about things like USDA meat grades and grass-fed versus grain-fed organic beef.
Ultimately we answered the question of which grocery store has the best steaks?
My pick for quality, consistency, price, and availability is Whole Foods Market. After all, they operate over 400 stores in multiple countries. While some place like Wegmans on the East Coast also has great steaks, I cant give them the win since they dont operate in most parts of the country.
Small butcher shops, of course, could be well worth checking out too if you have one. But anywhere you can find USDA Prime or at least Choice beef, ideally organically grown and grass-fed, get it! Youll have a great steak!
I would steer clear of buying meat from places that only sell USDA Select beef and also steer clear of places that dont have butchers on staff who cut their meat fresh. Trader Joes and Aldi come to mind there.
What To Look For In A Ribeye
You want the Ribeye steak to be odorloess, bright in color, moist, and with plenty of marbling . Below you will see an example of some good marbling in a Ribeye.
These are beautiful Ribeye steaks. If you see them this good for a good price, don’t hesistate to buy them. These are Prime Ribeye steaks from Costco going for $13.99/lb. That is a high quality steak for the price of an average Ribeye at most grocery stores.

Which Supermarket Has The Best Quality Meat
There are tons of supermarkets out there, so this article is going to focus on a handful of well-known supermarkets.
When shopping for meat, you should look for good marbling and nice red color with no brown spots.
Another factor in the quality of meat is whether the cow is given growth hormones or antibiotics. Animals fed right and treated humanely are not just for marketing. They make for better tasting, healthier meat. As a bonus, you can feel good that the cow lived its best life before it landed on your plate.

Are Steaks From Whole Foods Good
The best grade of beef is Prime, and organic grass-fed is premium in terms of meat quality, taste & health. Unfortunately prime beef is only available in small quantities to grocers like Wegmans or Whole Foods Market due to low demand due to its premium price. But the best nationwide grocer for steaks is Whole Foods.
What does Step 4 mean at Whole Foods? o Step 2: Enriched environment o Step 3: Enhanced outdoor access. o Step 4: Pasture centered o Step 5: Animal centered no physical alterations.
How long does Whole Foods meat last?
Use within two days.
Beef can stay fresh a day or two longer in the fridge, but it may begin to discolor .
How do you salt a porterhouse steak? How to Make Salted-for-12-Hours Porterhouse Steak. Youll start by seasoning the steak with 1 tablespoon kosher salt, which sounds like a lot but works out to 1 teaspoon salt per pound of steak, which is the general rule.
A Lower Price Per Pound Is Great But When You Have To Buy In Bulk The Total Price Can Still Be A Bit Of A Shock
Economically, it helps to buy whole roasts or loins and carve them into steaks yourself — but even then, they’re usually hefty, and hence, more expensive as a single purchase . As an extreme example, on the Costco website, you can find imported Japanese wagyu boneless rib-eye roasts for about $82 per pound — but you have to buy 11 pounds at once, so you’re dropping $900.
Costco even sells Wagyu beef if you’re feeling flush.
If any amount or form of wagyu is out of your price range, $24.76 per pound for USDA Prime dry-aged porterhouse and strip steaks from Rastelli’s at Costco sounds much better — but they come in 8-count packages, so that’s still $259.99.
Luckily, shopping in the store and buying the Kirkland labeled steak will net you significantly lower prices and more reasonable amounts of meat the average package of steaks of all varieties in my Costco seemed to be around five pounds, with outliers both lighter and heavier. So a pack of Choice rib-eye steaks would cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $50. That’s obviously worth it to many, end of story.

Is Whole Foods Meat Really Better
Meats. Whole Foods is known for its organic, humanely raised meats. But you can find cage-free, free range or organic offerings at other stores now too, and at better prices. Looking more broadly, Morgan Stanleys analysis found meat prices at Whole Foods were 34 percent higher than at a traditional grocery store.
How long does Whole Foods dry age their steaks? Whole Foods sells dry-aged steaks at many stores around the United States, but not all. Because the dry-aging procedure takes so much time, mostly 30 days or so, and reduces the steaks overall weight, many grocery stores do not sell it on-site and instead opt to special order as needed. Should I salt dry-aged steak?
Is porterhouse a good steak?
Even for someone with a hearty appetite, finishing an entire porterhouse often proves a significant challenge! As for its flavor profile, porterhouse is considered one of the highest-quality cuts available, which means it requires little in the way of adornments to deliver a delicious meal.
Is porterhouse better than ribeye? A Ribeye cut is more flavorful than Porterhouse. The taste is beefy and delicious due to the combination of fat, marbling, and tender texture. In terms of tenderness, the Porterhouse steak is tender, just like most cow parts, including the filet mignon. The Ribeye is also a very tender cut.
Where Does Whole Foods Get Their Steaks
According to a Bloomberg report, a growing percentage of Whole Foods poultry and beef is now sourced from mega-sized producers, including Perdue and Tyson-owned brands.
Is porterhouse steak a bone? The T-bone and porterhouse are steaks of beef cut from the short loin. Both steaks include a T-shaped bone with meat on each side. Porterhouse steaks are cut from the rear end of the short loin and thus include more tenderloin steak, along with a large strip steak.
Does Whole Foods meat taste better? The Whole Foods steak is tender and earthier tasting, with a softer chew and more evenly distributed fat.
