Tips For Cooking Shark Steak

Kara David spots illegal whale shark meat in Cebu | I-Witness

Keep the following helpful tips in mind when cooking shark steaks. These tips will guarantee the best possible results with shark steak recipes:

Buying shark steaks Purchase the best shark meat available. Shark flesh tends to spoil quickly and might get damaged if not handled correctly. Ensure that you select shark steaks that are juicy and transparent also, be certain that the steaks are not flaky. To assure the greatest quality, buy sharks from recognized supermarkets and fishmongers.

Preparing the shark steaks for cooking Place the shark meat in a fridge-safe dish and cover it with milk. Allowing it to soak this way will help get rid of the ammonia smell and gamey flavor that many fresh catches tend to have.

If the shark you get is from a reputable vendor, it may already have been treated. If there is no ammonia odor, there may be no need to soak the shark steaks, but you should still do it to ensure that it is of its finest quality for the best results.

Freshly caught shark steaks must be soaked immediately after cleaning, or the meat will become inedible. It makes no difference what kind of milk you use in soaking the steaks. A lot of people use any kind of buttermilk or cows milk, but soy milk would suffice in a hurry. If youre not creating a ceviche recipe, plain milk is a better alternative than buttermilk or lemon juice because its less acidic.

How Thick Is Your Shark Steak A Quick Note On Timing

How long you need to cook the steak on each side will depend on how thick your fish is.

Just keep a good eye on it. And turn the heat down so that your garlic doesnt scorch.

After about 10-12 minutes, flip the shark steaks over.

Cook for about another 10-12 minutes on that side, until the fish is browned on the bottom and cooked through the middle.

If you dont cook fish often, cut a little nick in the middle and take a peek inside.

If its opaque through and through, its done.

If its still pink or translucent, it needs to cook longer.

When the fish is just about done, add the spiced rum and last tablespoon of butter to the pan.

Whack the lime in two and squeeze both halves into the pan. Sprinkle with lime zest.

The spiced rum / butter / lime juice shebang will help deglaze the pan and turns all those juices and browned bits into a gloriously tangy, caramelized sauce.

Evolving Into Ecommerce With Ups

For over thirty years, Anderson Seafoods has been delivering fresh fish to local markets and restaurants. Over time, and as the company grew, Anderson Seafoods began expanding and delivering to larger national markets through eCommerce. And the company can attribute a lot of this success to UPS. Owner and Founder, Dennis Anderson, claims, UPS helped us build a new arm to our company. No question about it.

As Anderson Seafoods embraced eCommerce, the team knew they had to find a way to continue to deliver quality products and goods but at a quicker pace, and without sacrificing quality to customers. Before UPS came along, they had no method to tackle this challenge or to guarantee their products.

Then, Steven Tick, Account Executive at UPS heard of what Anderson Seafoods was trying to do. With Stevens background and expertise in eCommerce, he reached out to Anderson Seafoods with a lot of great ideas and solutions that changed the face of Anderson Seafoods and gave our customers the ability to buy fresh seafood online

One of the biggest challenges was to devise a refrigerated package that would stay cold for at least 48 hours until it reached the customer in quality shape. Steven and his team conducted a number of tests to ensure the quality and durability of the refrigerated package and its containments.

Clean The Shark Immediately

On the other hand, if you catch your shark, its vital that you reel it in and clean it as soon as possible! The reason being is that as a shark gets tired, it releases more lactic acid and carbon dioxide in its blood and muscles, which can affect the taste of the shark meat.

Ammonia Can Spoil Shark Meat

However, the biggest culprit to spoiling the taste of the meat is the ammonia taste that can be left behind if not properly cleaned.

As a shark deteriorates the urea in their blood begins to turn into ammonia which then gets absorbed in the flesh and expelled through its skin. In other words, sharks basically urinate through their skin.

Is There A Solution

While many argue that transparency about species of sharks and awareness among customers is one solution to conserve the sharks, experts also advocate for steps such as better fisheries management, regulation and reducing industrial fishing.

Transparency of information such as the species of shark served allows customers to make informed decisions about the seafood they consume, said Alissa Barnes of InSeason Fish, who has studied shark fisheries in India since 2014. While gathering information on restaurants that serve shark meat, we noticed that more than half of the restaurants that serve seafood do not clearly specify the type of fish that will be served on your platter, let alone the species of shark. A simple step such as mentioning the fish species served can go a long way in terms of sustainability and awareness, she said.

Is awareness about consumption a solution? Yes but that itself is not going to resolve the shark fisheries issue, Lobo noted. We need better fisheries management, regulation, trade, equality within fisheries, and better management of issues pertaining to labour. We need to address the elephant in the room. There is no real effort being made to reduce industrial fishing. There is no focus on sustainability or equitability in fishing. In fact, Indias latest fishery policy gives a push to deep-sea fishing which will perhaps make the situation worse for sharks, he said.

Study Of Prehistoric Cultures

Rafinesque made a notable contribution to North American prehistory with his studies of ancient of the and , especially in the . He was the first to identify these as the Ancient Monuments of America. He listed more than 500 such archaeological sites in Ohio and Kentucky. Rafinesque never excavated rather, he recorded the sites visited by careful measurements, sketches, and written descriptions. Only a few of his descriptions were published, with his friend John D. Rafinesques work was used by others. For instance, he identified 148 ancient earthworks sites in Kentucky. All sites in Kentucky that were included by E. G. Squier and Davis in their notable , completed for the , were first identified by Rafinesque in his manuscripts.

Rafinesque also made contributions to studies. The latter were based on linguistic data, which he extracted from printed sources, mostly those of travelers. He designated as , the ancient language of the island of . Others later also used the term to identify the of indigenous Caribbean peoples.
