Safe Catchs Wild Ahi Yellowfin Tuna

Ahi is one of our lowest mercury tunas. Its a great choice for athletes, kids & pregnant women!

FOUNDED ON CARE, GROUNDED IN SCIENCE

Safe Catchs inspired beginnings were brought to life by our founders care for his Mom, when she developed mercury poisoning from eating a daily regimen of tuna. As a scientist in training, Sean sprung into technical action, determined to prevent this from happening to other moms, infants, children, and everyone else.

MERCURY TESTED

We hand select and test every, single, tuna, to a mercury limit lower than the FDA action limit. No other brand in the world does this. That is why Safe Catch Elite and Ahi, Wild Yellowfin are proven to meet Consumer Reports Low Mercury criteria set for pregnant and nursing women and young children. These products are also the only tuna endorsed by the American Pregnancy Association. At Safe Catch, we test because we care.

ARTISAN COOK PROCESS

Chefs know, slow cooking premium ingredients leads to amazing taste and texture. That is why we hand fillet and pack nothing but sashimi grade tuna steaks, never fillers or artificial additives. In contrast, Industrial Tuna is cooked first on racks, refrozen, thawed, machine packed, where fillers are added, then cooked a second time, which may be an effective mass production process but definitively not an artisanal one. Our handcrafting of premium fish into noticeably elite tuna steaks makes Safe Catch a healthy and deliciously differentiated tuna.

SUSTAINABLY CAUGHT

Wildfish Cannery Smoked White King Salmon

This unique, “highly sought-after” white king salmon stands out as a particularly special canned option, as this specific type of salmon “represents a mere five percent of the total king salmon population in Alaska,” according to the companys website. The fish itself is white, but otherwise, it is the same as the more commonly-seen pink-fleshed salmon as explained on the companys website, “While all that separates a white King from the red is its inability to process pigments, its rarity sets it apart.”

Bumble Bee Pink Salmon 1475

Instacart

  • Skin and bones offer extra flavor

  • Unclear whether fish is packed in water or natural juices

  • Some may not like the texture of bone-in, skin-on fish

Bumble Bee offers larger cans of bone-in, skin-on wild Alaskan pink salmon at an affordable price, making it a good option for families and larger households with a grocery budget.

Although the quality is a step down from some of the premium seafood brands, this salmon still packs extra flavor since it contains the skin and bones. The salmon is packed in a considerable amount of liquid and it’s unclear whether it’s water or natural juices.

This brand edged out its bargain competition because the website outlines the mechanized canning process and the cans are coded with a Trace My Catch feature. However, using the code was tricky the website says to use all the numbers, but we succeeded only when eliminating some numbers.

Our can listed “the Alaska Salmon fishery” as the source of the salmon. It was caught by a purse seiner fishing vessel, and then shipped to a cannery in Thailand after initial processing. Since the cannery itself is located in Thailand, a “Product of Thailand” label is on the can, even though the fish are caught in Alaska.

Is Safe Catch Telling The Truth About Mercury Levels

In 2017 one of the leaders in the world of sustainable tuna, Wild Planet, issued a scathing memo that, while not mentioning the Safe Catch brand by name, was clearly aimed at Safe Catch customers.

A sample of the text from the memo is below:

We respectfully call attention to an important point: any brand making a claim of safer seafood rightfullybears the burden of proof but what would constitute proof? We suggest three points:

Provide third-party verification as to the efficacy of their testing equipment and methodology Deliver third-party accreditation that every fish is being tested Produce third-party corroboration that no product available in the marketplace exceeds self-proclaimedstrict mercury limits.

None of this information is supplied by any company making these mercury claims. There is no third-partyevidence on any tuna companys website verifying ANY of the extravagant claimsmade. This raises questions which rightly deserve answers.

A broad summarization of the Wild Planet statement is that: The technical ability to test every fish for mercury to such an incredibly low level in the field has never been demonstrated. Any company that claims to have such technology should be viewed as suspect until the company proves such technology exists.

The Credibility of Safe Catch

A short quote from the article is below:

For Maximum Omega3 Benefit Do Not Drain

How To Cook Wild Caught Yellowfin Tuna Steaks | Pan Fry Yellowfin Tuna Steaks

Conventional brands pre-cook fish on racks, draining away healthy nutrients and Omega3 oils. It is then packed in water, oil or often a GMO broth and cooked again. This impairs natural flavor and texture.

Safe Catch does it differently. We hand pack raw, sashimi-grade fish in the can and then slow cook each one to perfection in its own natural juices. This retains 100% of the tunaâs vital oils and freshness.

Do not drain Safe Catch tuna. There are no additives and fillersâjust pure tuna in each can!

And for a great meatless dinner, try frying up salmon burgers bound together with a little mayo, breadcrumbs, and egg. You can get creative with it, too. Use it in pot pies, chowders, risotto, tacos, and more.

How Does Safe Catch Tuna Have The Lowest Mercury Limit Of Any Tuna Brand

We are not aware of any other brand besides Safe Catch that screens each wild tuna to a mercury limit. Mercury levels between two individual tuna can vary widely even between two tuna of the same size, same school and from the same location. Weve tested over 700,000 fish for mercury levels and tested wild tuna with mercury levels over 2 times higher than the FDA mercury limit of 1.0 parts per million . Thats why Safe Catch tests every single fish to strict mercury limits and Safe Catch is the only brand that tests every single fish for mercury.

What Is The Difference Between Red Salmon And Pink Salmon

How To Grill Yellowfin Tuna Steaks

Salmon comes in a beautiful array of colors from light pink to vivid orange-red, depending on the species. Red salmon usually refers to sockeye, which has a rich taste and a denser texture than other salmon species. Pink salmon is the most plentiful and smallest of the Pacific salmon species, and is most often used in commercial canning. Its pink flesh turns greyish when cooked, and its mild flavor resembles tuna.

How Long Can Canned Salmon Stay In The Refrigerator

The USDA recommends that low-acid foods like fish and meat are safe to store in the refrigerator up to four days. Though keeping salmon in a can in the fridge is perfectly safe, the flavor will improve if you store it in a glass container with an air-tight lid. As for the cans in the pantry, plan to discard them five years from the manufacturing date.

How Can Safe Catch Be The Only Brand That Tests Every Tuna For Mercury

Mercury levels between two individual tuna can vary widely even between two tuna of the same size, same school and from the same location. The only way to know the purity of a fish is to test it. We partnered with engineers and scientists to develop a proprietary technology that can test each and every tuna for mercury. No other brand does this.

Safe Catch has tested over 2,000,000 fish to date. Every fish used in Safe Catch Ahi, Wild Yellowfin tuna is tested to a mercury limit 10 TIMES stricter than the FDA limit. If the fish does not pass our strict standards, Safe Catch does not buy the fish. They are still good fish, theyâre just not Safe Catch fish.
