How To Cook A Tomahawk Steak

Techniques: Breaking Down A Whole Ribeye – Cheap Steak!

When it comes to preparing a Tomahawk Steak, the challenge is its sheer size.

The steak is about 2 inches thick, which means traditional searing methods are going to leave you with either a cold center or a charcoal black surface.

The best methods for cooking your Tomahawk Steak are either using a grill to reverse sear it or using a combination of grill and pan.

Watch the video above to see how its done, check out our reverse sear tomahawk steak recipe, or follow the instructions below for a few general tips to cook your Tomahawk.

Making The Most Of Bulk Meat

If you buy steak at Costco, one things for sure: Youre going home with a lot of meat.

For everyday cooking , it helps to buy whole roasts or loins and carve them into steaks yourself. You can always freeze extra pieces individually to pull them out whenever youre ready to cook. This extra step can make bulk purchasing more worthwhile.

Theres also the option to cook your meat en masse and distribute it throughout the week into tacos, casseroles, stir fries, and other meals.

Only problem is, what if freezing ruins the quality of the meat, thus making the savings worthless?

According to some sources, freezing meat can actually make it more tender, but thats apparently only true for certain cuts .

Freezing steaks will definitely negatively impact the flavor and texture if you dont wrap it well, and/or if you keep it stashed in the freezer for too long. Vacuum sealing your meat is the ideal option if you need to freeze it.

If you dont have the set-up for that, try this tip: Set the raw steaks on a baking sheet lined with a Silpat or parchment paper, place the tray in the freezer for a couple hours until the steaks are fully frozen, then tightly wrap each one in plastic. Finally, place the securely wrapped steaks in a firmly-sealed plastic bag with all the air pressed out.

Its a little more work than chucking them right in a zip-top bag, but itll help prevent freezer burn and protect your investment .

What Makes One Type Of Steak Better Than Another

We all have our own idea of what makes a steak good.

The same applies when we talk about better steaks. For this article, were going to assume that the better steak is super flavorful yet tender. Were also going to assume that cost is not a factor.

Filet Mignon comes from the tenderloin portion of the cow.

It contains very little fat and comes from a non-weight-bearing muscle. This, along with it not containing much connective tissue makes it the most tender cut of meat. However, the lack of fat does not make it the most flavorful.

This is why it is usually served with some sort of sauce or wrapped in bacon.

Strip steaks, like the NY Strip, is a good balance of flavor and tenderness. Its got some fat in it, making it more flavorful than the filet mignon. Its also a well-worked muscle, making it less tender.

The Ribeye is the most flavorful cust of meat. Look for high marbling. This is the white swirling youll see in the steak. The more marbling, the more flavorful the steak. If cooked with care, it can also be very tender.

So, what makes one steak better than another steak? A good amount of fat and cut from an area that doesnt do much work .

So some steaks are more expensive than others. But at the end of the day, are all steaks chewy?

. I get into how to know which types to buy, how to cook them for the best results, and the 1 sure-fire way to make a great steak chewy if you do it wrong!

Foods You Should Never Buy At Whole Foods

Though over a year ago, prices at the high-end grocery chain haven’t come down . A cart of groceries at Whole Foods containing about 60 items cost $197, according a recent research report from Morgan Stanley, about 15 percent higher than a conventional grocery store: The same grocery items at Kroger cost $153.

“Generally speaking, the perimeter of Whole Foods Markets are usually much more expensive, but quality is also deemed better, too,” says Chuck Grom, Managing Director of Gordon Haskett Research Advisors, who analyzes pricing trends at Whole Foods and other retailers.

Even so, you should really only shop at Whole Foods for specialty items you can’t find elsewhere, or if a certain product is on sale, Cindy Livesey, author of “Living Rich with Coupons,” tells CNBC Make It. “It’s a very expensive store and their prices on the majority of their items are way higher than you can get anywhere else.”

Here are the top six foods experts say you shouldn’t bother buying at Whole Foods.

Like Steak But Not Sure If Prime Is Worth The Money

Whole Ribeye

I recently conducted a blind taste test of USDA Choice, USDA Prime, Certified Angus, and Grass-fed ribeye steaks.

Prime is definitely the most expensive of those 4, but did it taste the best? Find out my results in this recent article and brief video where youll see it all unfold!

Important Things To Remember

On average, a two rib prime rib can feed up to five people. If youre cooking for a group of six or more a three-rib prime rib would be better suited.

If you plan a meal for a bigger number of people and youre not really sure how this meat should be cooked, instead of ruining a great prime rib, you should mess with and risk messing up either a flank steak, a pork tenderloin, a chuck steak, or even some burgers because prime ribs are pretty hard to cook and with little experience, you are bound to mess something up.

If you are shopping for ribs, dont forget to ask the butcher if they can give you the first cut of beef. First cuts will be closer to the rib and leaner than on other ends. If your butcher is able to di, this piece may cost more per pound but it will make a big difference in taste.

If youre in the mood for prime rib, its always a good idea to call ahead and reserve your cut of meat. Although the demand for beef has increased in time and beef production is at an all-time high, the stores may be out during busy times like summer or Christmas due to increased demand. If they are available at grocery stores near you, make sure not to forget about them while shopping.

Whole Foods Expensive Humanely Treated Meat Is A Sham Peta Lawsuit Claims

In green, air-conditioned aisles at stores across America, the welcoming signs beckon. Yes, customers may be buying meat and theres no denying that meat is dead animals. But these animals, it seems, are raised and killed humanely. That beef, chicken, turkey or pork in shoppers baskets isnt necessarily inconsistent with animal welfare. Right?

Isnt that what Whole Foods customers are paying for? At the chain not-so-affectionately nicknamed Whole Paycheck many fork over top dollar for meat raised with animals well-being in mind. The store even has a 5-Step Animal Welfare Rating system.

But, in a class action lawsuit filed in California on Monday, a well-known animal rights group alleges that the grocery chains attempts to monitor how its suppliers treat their animals are a sham. And that its customers are paying for it.

When a grocery stores standards for improved animal welfare are not actually enforced or do not require meaningfully better treatment for meat animals compared to the industry standard, consumers are deceived into paying a higher price for meat that fails to offer the benefit they seek, the suit against Whole Foods, filed by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals in U.S. District Court in Northern California, read.

A representative for Whole Foods said that the chain was not yet ready to respond to the complaint, but cautioned about PETAs motives.

The color of the meat can tell you a lot about the quality of meat. So, on your shopping trip to the grocery store be on the lookout for the color of the meat before you buy it. What the different color of the meat indicates are-

  • A lighter shade of red means that the meat is fresh.
  • Meat that has been left in the cold storage for a long while has a darker shade of red.
  • The deep red color and yellowish marbling indicate that the meat comes from a grass-fed cow.
  • Light red color with white or creamy marbling means the cow was grain-fed.
  • Brown spots on meat mean the meat isnt of good quality. Avoid buying such meat.

I think it’s safe to say John Wayne ate steak.

These are the famous first words uttered by Mr. Alton Brown in the very first moments of television’s greatest show of all the times – Good Eats.

OK. I know a lot of you are rolling your eyes and thinking of a handiful of shows that better belong among the greatest. For me, Good Eats has had the biggest impact of any show on my life. I may not be writing a food blog right now if it wasn’t for Alton and his cast of characters and puppets.

Back to the point. Today we are talking about steak.

The very same steak that was the topic of that first ever Good Eats episode – the Ribeye. I love a Ribeye steak. Ribeyes are flavorful, tender, and juicy. Very hard to beat good rib eye steaks.

I don’t eat Ribeye a lot. Why? They aren’t cheap eats. It’s more of a special treat thing – the kind of meal I save for a day like father’s day, the first cook-out of the year, bringing home a baby from the hospital, any kind of momentous day can be a Ribeye day.
