Is Montreal Steak Seasoning From Montreal
Originally, this spice blend was inspired by the dry rub that is used to make Montreal smoked meat, a cured and smoked beef brisket that is popular in the United States. It gained popularity in Montreal after someone began putting it on steaks and ribs, and later, spice manufacturer McCormick began selling the blend in delis and steakhouses throughout the province.

Montreal Steak Seasoning Recipe: Table Of Contents
About the ingredients:
- Crushed Peppercorns: These provide the seasoning with the smokey flavor youll absolutely adore.
- Mustard seeds, Kosher salt, paprika, dried dill, etc: These comprise the seasoning itself. It may seem like itd be spicy, but I promise that Montreal steak seasoning doesnt have much of a kick to it at all.
About the blender:
You dont technically have to use a blender for this recipe. Some people recommend a mortar and pestle instead. Ive found, however, that an electric blender speeds up the process. Great for those of us who may not have a lot of time or energy, right?
Msg And Gluten Content
Most of the BBQ rubs available on the market nowadays are free from MSG and gluten. Some even are for Kosher dietary. Dont mind spending a few seconds to make sure the rubs you buy are free from these two substances.
Meanwhile, some BBQ rubs are still added MSG to boost the flavor of the rubs. If you prefer the extra flavorful taste, you can purchase it. Make sure you have no problems with MSG. However, to protect your health, please use the food containing MSG sparingly.

Here Are Seven Gluten
Celiac.com 12/05/2020 We recently fielded a question about whether A-1 stake sauce is gluten-free by pointing out that it was not labeled gluten-free, but likely safe, as it contains no gluten ingredients, and manufacturer Kraft is very good about labeling allergens, including gluten. A product made with no gluten ingredients not having a gluten-free label is not necessarily a big deal, but many people with celiac disease like to play it safe.
Its also true that there numerous brands of steak sauce are gluten-free. These brands go the extra mile to make sure their steak sauces are labeled Gluten-Free. That means that you can breath extra easy about serving them to people with celiac disease.

How To Make Canadian Steak Marinade:
This is super simple, olive oil, water, red wine vinegar, and Canadian/Montreal Steakî seasoning..
Mix them together in a large bowl, or a large zipper top plastic bag. Add your steak , flip them to coat..
Let them hang out on the counter for 30 minutes or so until the steaks are room temperature.
While your steaks are marinating, turn your grill on to HIGH heat.
Place your steaks over direct heat and cook for 4 to 5 minutes to sear. Flip them over and cook for an additional 3 to 5 minutes for medium-rare*, or 5 to 7 minutes for medium*..
If you cook your steaks longer than that, we can no longer be friends. Remove from the grill, loosely cover with foil, and allow to rest for 5 minutes before serving..
Yes, those are Broiled Lobster Tails.
- *cooking time are approximate and based on your steaks being 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inches thick
- If your steaks are thin sear on each side and pull them off!! Internal temperature should be around 140 to 145.
- The original recipe calls for red wine vinegar, but I actually prefer balsamic. Use whichever one that you have on hand.
- The recipe listed below is per pound of steak. Simply multiply based on the total weight of the steaks that you need to marinate.
- This marinade works with any type of steak.

This Is Whats Wrong With Commercial Montreal Steak Seasoning
You may have seen it on grocery store shelves. Many brands of Montreal steak seasoning. Small hand-crafted versions, as well as mass-produced spice blends, vie for shelf space.
After my introduction to the seasoning, I began stocking it in my pantry and using the perfect blend on many meat dishes. However, over time, I couldnt keep overlooking a significant problem. It was far too salty.
In my experience, all the commercially produced Montreal steak seasonings are too salty. And I like salt. But McCormicks Montreal steak seasoning recipe adds too much salt. And McCormicks was the brand I used the most.
I also suspected it was so salty to hide the taste of old bland spices.
My easy Montreal steak seasoning recipe eliminated the problem of tasteless spices and too much salt.
Can You Eat Steak On A Low Sodium Diet
Bacon, lunchmeat, hot dogs, sausage, salami, and ham are examples of processed meats that are rich in salt. Meats that have been smoked, cured, or canned are also considered processed meats. Instead, get fresh or frozen fish, poultry, beef, or pig, which you can prepare and season yourself, rather than canned or frozen.

Homemade Montreal Steak Seasoning
For my homemade Montreal steak seasoning, I wanted the flavors to really pop and I absolutely love the bigger pieces of spices mixed into the seasoning, so I used a mortar and pestle to grind the whole spices fresh. If you dont have one, you can use a small coffee grinder
You can also just use the pre-ground versions of any of the whole spices included in the ingredients list, but they may not be as vibrant so you may want to season your meat a little more liberally with the finished Montreal seasoning.
Montreal Steak Spice The Case For Making Your Own
Montreal Steak Spice spread across the country, and is widely available on store shelves from several national brands. As with many bottled seasonings, the cost increases dramatically once the ingredients are blended and packaged.
It is a far more economical practice to make your own and, I think, far more flavourful too.
Another issue with seasonings like Montreal Steak Spice is the amount of salt used in the blend. Because salt is a cheap filler ingredient, I think the default action of brands is to use rather a lot.
Homemade Montreal Steak Spice on Sizzling Chuck Burger
Look at the composition of Montreal Steak spice in one of the small bottles in the spice aisle at your supermarket and you can see that the coarse salt granules are very prevalent in the mix.
In some blends Ive seen, it looks to me that it could comprise as much as half. For me that is far too much. I also prefer a smaller grained salt in my blend.
After doing some research and looking at the composition of other recipes online plus a little experimenting, I came up with my own blend that I think works very well.
For me the salt in this blend is adequate to season a steak well and adds a lot more flavour than the standard off-the-shelf brands.

Remember the best part of making seasonings at home is you can control the ingredients. Want more heat? Add some cayenne pepper? Dont like onion? Lessen the amount of onion powder. You get the idea!
