We stayed here for one night as part of our Route 66 roadtrip. Our room was big and clean. Service and breakfast was fine. They offer guest laundry but they didnt have change available for the machines that was annoying. The big bonus is that its right next to the Big Texan Steak Ranch so you know theres somewhere to go for dinner!

Very Close to the Airport plus right next door to the World Famous Big Texan Restaurant and hotel. The gym and hot tub were great which some Hampton Inns dont have usually which was a nice surprise since I used them both days.

The Dream: Eat A Whole Cow

R.J. Bob Lee opened the Big Texan in 1960. It stood along Route 66 near the Amarillo stockyards. One day in 1962 a cowboy came in so hungry that he said he could eat a whole cow. Bob decided to see if that was true. The cowboy quit after 72 ounces of meat, but Bob was still impressed and announced that anyone who could match it would get their meal for free.

The Big Texan moved in 1970 to a spot along Interstate 40 . With exposure to farther-flung diners, unfamiliar with cowboy lore, the Free 72 Ounce Steak challenge adopted the rules that it still follows today .

Do not travel internationally until you are fully vaccinated. If you are not fully vaccinated and must travel, follow CDCs international travel recommendations for people who are not fully vaccinated.

Fully vaccinated travelers are less likely to get and spread COVID-19. However, international travel poses additional risks, and even fully vaccinated travelers might be at increased risk for getting and possibly spreading some COVID-19 variants.

The COVID-19 situation, including the spread of new or concerning variants, differs from country to country. All travelers need to pay close attention to the conditions at their destination before traveling.

CDC will update these recommendations as more people get vaccinated, as rates of COVID-19 change, and as additional scientific evidence becomes available.

The Big Texan Motel Amarillo

Travels With Carole: Good Eats: Big Texan Steak Ranch, Amarillo, Texas

To discuss the Big Texan Motel without mentioning the adjoining restaurant would be to miss the big picture the two go hand in hand as an all-round experience known as The Big Texan Steak Ranch. The motel itself is designed to look like a main street in a Wild West town, complete with shuttered windows and an actual area for the horses! The rooms are not huge but are clean and comfortable.

However: you dont visit The Big Texan to spend a lot of time in the rooms. Which brings us nicely onto the restaurant where else can you get a free 72oz steak?

There is, of course, a catch: its only free if you can eat it within an hour! This pretty much sums up the entire attitude of the Ranch big, extravagant and over the top! From the brightly painted exterior to the boot-shaped beer glasses, the Big Texan revels in its Texan heritage whilst embracing a tongue-in-cheek playfulness that certainly pleases the tourists!

I stayed here on a Friday night and the place was buzzing with excitement: there were games and exhibits while you waited for your table, live music while you ate, and of course the occasional announcement that someone with eyes bigger than their belly was going to attempt the 72oz challenge.

Cute place to stop for tourists. I enjoyed going through the little shop with t-shirts, jewelry, & other trinkets.I had been here before and decided to get a bite to eat to take back to my room.If youre ordering to go, you are made to go outside on the porch and order through a window. It took forever! All I ordered was a baked potato and broccoli. It was terrible. Not impressed at all. How do you mess up a potato and broccoli? My next visit I wont be stopping here.

Heather was our server. Exceptional attention to detail. Was funny ..witty..and engaging with the customers.Made our first time worthwhileThe Criggers from Indiana

Interstate 40 Access Rd Amarillo Texas
