5 Best Steak Knife Sets Reviewed in 2022 [Top Rated Steak Knives Set]

Steak knives, like all other sharp knives, should be kept safe from being jostled around or and knocked into by other utensils. You can use a sheath or knife roll if youve got room on your magnetic knife strip, thats an excellent idea, too. Some of the knives we tested came with permanent storage solutions, while other will require an additional purchase. The important thing is to avoid tossing them loose in a utensil drawer.

The flat of the blade wont need attention just the curved indentions need sharpening. For full details about how to use a sharpening rod, see this Spruce Eats article.

New West Knifeworks G

G-10

Product Origin and Manufacturer Information:

Years of working in commercial kitchens inspired New West Knife Works Founder Corey Milligan to start making his own knives in his bedroom. Today, Milliagan has expanded his knife-making operation from his humble beginnings to starting a business that manufactures some of the finest knives in the world.

With its headquarters located in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, the New West brand strives to make knives as precise and impressive as world-class chefs make Michelin-star dishes. New West knives are durable, functional, last a lifetime, and are made with some of the finest materials you can find.

Why We Love These Knives:

The first thing that sticks out to us is G10 handles made out of fiberglass epoxy composite. Available in seven beautiful colors, these beautiful handles earn the name of the G-fusion knives with their glass-woven fabric that is soaked in epoxy resin.

This is certainly not to say that the blades on these G-fusion knives from New West are lacking in any way. S35VN steel is tough and durable, which is sharp enough to be used in bushcraft and hunting scenarios. These steak knives are half-serrated and half razor-sharp, straight-edged. This design helps prevent dings on your plates as well as finish cutting your steak smoothly.

Buck Knives 936 Steak Knives

Rosewood Dymalux

Product Origin and Manufacturer Information:

The founder of Buck knives, Hoyt Buck, had humble beginnings as a humble blacksmith seeking a more practical way to temper steel so knives would stay sharper longer. This desire led to him producing the first Buck knife in 1902, and the rest is history.

Hoyts tradition of manufacturing and designing high-quality knives right here in the United States lives on through three and now four generations. Buck makes over 3,000 knives every day in their factory located in Post Falls, Idaho, where about 300 workers are employed.

Why We Love Buck Steak Knives:

The 420HC steel found in the blade of this knife was chosen by the Buck brand because it offers a balance between the wear resistance of high carbon and the corrosion resistance of stainless. We think this is an excellent blade choice for a steak knife, and it shows when customers use these knives at their dinner tables.

The triple-riveted handle is called a Dymalux handle, which is a registered trademark of the Buck brand. Every knife that the Buck brand makes comes with a lifetime warranty, on top of the promise to remain all-American.

Youll find after reading this guide, that they are not all created equal. In fact, the price range between the best steak knife set and a cheap set can vary drastically. Unless youre educated on what makes a good, quality steak knife, its hard to know what youre looking for.

The BladeAdvisor team has put this buying guide together as an educational tool on how to select the best steak knives to buy. It will also give you a better understanding what separates good steak knives from cheap ones, why you may or may not want a serrated blade, and what full-tang means. Once youve invested in a good set of steak knives, well also help you care for them and store them properly so they last for years to come.

Serrated Vs Plain Edge

Theres long been a debate about which type of steak knife is better: Serrated or plain . The short answer is: There is no right answer. It depends on what youre looking for. Critics argue that serrated blades dont cut as pretty because youre essentially sawing through the meat. They do, however, cut more efficiently and stay sharper longer since the entire blade doesnt make full contact with the plate underneath. Theyre not as easy to sharpen as plain-edge knives, but significant advances in blade technology have made the home-sharpening of serrated steak knives much easier than it used to be.

On the flip side, plain steak knives cut much cleaner and are easier to sharpen at home. They do, however, dull faster than their serrated counterparts since the full length of the blade regularly makes contact with the plate below. That means more maintenance and sharpening every few months or so .

Top 17 Best Dishwasher Safe Steak Knives: Reviews & Comparison 2020

Serious Eats / Vicky Wasik

For the main test, I had a group of six people from the Serious Eats team evaluate the knives under real-world, steak-cutting conditions. In the test kitchen, I cooked three different cuts of steakhanger, skirt, and 2-inch-thick New York stripsto evaluate how well the knives performed on tougher cuts of beef as well as thick-cut steaks. I did my best to choose testers of different ages, height, gender, cooking experience, and dominant hand orientation. Before having them cut into steaks on porcelain plates, testers were asked to evaluate knives based on their appearance, and feelhow ergonomically comfortable they were to hold, along with whether they liked the weight distribution, balance, and blade-to-handle dimensions.

Performance was the next criterion testers were asked to slice the different cuts of steak with each knife. After recording observations on performance, participants were tasked with giving each knife an overall grade from 1 to 10, while also writing down how much they would personally be willing to spend on a set of steak knives for themselves, as well as how much they would be willing to spend on a set to give as a nice gift to someone they really cared about.

Q: How Should I Store My Steak Knives

How you store your steak knives depends on how often you use them and how much space youre working with. As we use them so often, they are in the utensils drawer, Lorenza cofounder Michele Ouellet tells us. If youre looking for something dedicated solely to your knives, that works, too. Its no surprise that Material came out with the smartest storage for its Table Knives , Stevens shares. Turn it upright if youre rich in counter space, or lay it down flat if drawers are more your thing.

The Paper Test Gave Us An Idea Of Factory Sharpness But Didn’t Tell The Whole Story

Serious Eats / Vicky Wasik

As Daniel did with chef’s knives, the first and last tests for this review were performed to check the sharpness of each knife. I ran the blade of each knife, from heel to tip, through sheets of printer paper that had been folded in half. This test isn’t a precise measure of sharpness, but it allowed me to see which knives had a factory edge sharp enough to effortlessly slice through paper, and note which ones got snagged and tore at the sheets.

The knife that performed the worst was the one micro-serrated knife that we tested, which tore and got caught on the paper. The knives that performed best were generally the premium straight-edged knives, while the cheaper knives had more trouble. The Messermeister Avanta was the notable exception to this trend it was one of the most budget-friendly knives of the dozen that were tested, and it sliced through paper just as well, if not better, than ones that cost five times more. It is also worth noting that the serrated steak knife that we tested aced the paper test, cutting through the sheet smoothly even with its saw-toothed edge.
