Baking And Storing Egg Rolls:

  • Baking Dont want to fry them? You can bake them. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Place egg rolls seam side down on a baking sheet so that they are not touching. Spray the egg roll with nonstick cooking spray. Bake for 10-15 minutes till golden flipping 2-3 times while baking. If you want extra crispiness broil for one minute on each side.
  • Storing- Egg rolls are best eaten fresh from the fryer while they are still crispy but you can reheat leftovers. Egg rolls will keep about 2-3 days in the fridge. When ready to reheat, place in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes at 350 degrees. Theyll be tasty, just not as crispy.

What Kind Of Cheese Should I Use For Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls

Provolone is the cheese of choice.

I live in St. Louis, so we also have a cheese called Provel and thats what I usually use, but if I cant get it, provolone is also the #1 choice.

Before I assemble these, I usually saute some onions, peppers and mushrooms in butter and add to about a half.

Then I insert a toothpick in the plain ones, so that people know they are plain.

You can do them however you want.

Philly Cheesesteak Egg Roll Recipe

With football season upon us, it is ALL about the Game Day Food! In other words, it is all about Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls, Slow Cooker Honey Buffalo Meatballs, Jalapeno Popper Dip, Buffalo Chicken Dip , Bacon Ranch Cheese Ball with football on the side.

Even if youre not a football fan, you will not be able to stop cheering for these Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls. They are basically a fusion of Americas greatest sandwich with Chinas greatest finger food which makes them the MVP of appetizers.

This Philly Cheese Steak Egg Roll recipe is deceptively simple to make. Once the steak has been marinated in pantry friendly ingredients, all you do is cook the steak, onions, bell peppers, mushrooms and jalapenos, transfer them to your food processor for a quick chop and you have 10 minute filling! Seriously, I am SO in love with this quick and easy food processor method and you will be too!

Next, add the filling to the center of your egg roll wrappers, roll up and either bake or fry then EAT! And with each juicy, cheesy bite, you will be winning all over again.

Key Ingredients In This Recipe

Philly Steak & Cheese Egg Rolls
  • Roast beef Since shaved steak is best for making Philly cheesesteak, rather than going through the process of freezing and thinly shaving the meat, I opt to use roast beef instead. The lunch meat is a great shortcut while still providing great steak flavor and texture to the filling.
  • Onion Sautéed onions enhance the flavor of the cheesesteak just as grilled onions are served over classic cheesesteak sandwiches. I use a yellow onion in this recipe. Yellow onions have a mellow flavor, especially when cooked.
  • Jalapeño Removing the membrane and seeds from the jalapeño cuts down on the heat while retaining the flavor and a more subtle heat.
  • American cheese Though American cheese is processed, it is superior for its creamy, gooey texture and a classic pairing in cheesesteak sandwiches. White American cheese is preferred aesthetically to yellow American though either would do.
  • Egg roll wrappers The oversize wrappers are made from a dough made with flour and eggs. I recommend buying egg roll wrappers from the grocery store. They can be found in the refrigerated sections. Be sure to cover the egg rolls with a damp paper towel.

Making the beef and vegetable filling

To make the filling, start by dicing the peppers, onion, and mushrooms. You want the pieces to be as small as possible so that they incorporate nicely into the beef. Add olive oil spray to the frying pan, and heat the pan over medium high heat. Add the vegetables to the pan. Cook the vegetables for about 5 minutes. Cover the vegetables with a lid, and cook the vegetables covered for 10 minutes. This will help the vegetables steam and cook down nicely. After 10 minutes, remove the lid and cook the vegetables for another 5 minutes or until they are tender, cooked down and slightly caramelized.

Next, add the beef to the pan. Break it apart with a wooden spoon. Add the garlic powder, onion powder, dried oregano, and salt to the meat. Cook the meat for about 5-8 minutes or until it is no longer pink. Then, add the Worcestershire and tomato paste to the pan stir to incorporate.

Let the filling cool before assembling the egg rolls. This is an important step!

Assembling the egg rolls

Lay the egg roll wrappers out on your work station, and prepare a small bowl of water to seal the wrappers once rolled.

Spray the basket of the air fryer with non-stick cooking spray, and add the egg rolls to the air fryer . I worked in two batches of 6 egg rolls each.

Spray the tops of the egg rolls with more non-stick spray, and air fry the egg rolls at 370 for 10 minutes, flipping halfway.

Tips For The Perfect Air Fryer Egg Roll

  • Cover egg roll wrappers with a damp paper towel to ensure they don’t dry out while you are working with them.
  • The egg wash around the edges of the wrapper is what makes it stick together. You can replace this with water and spray the rolled wrappers with cooking spray if you don’t have an egg for the egg wash.
  • Roll the wrapper up tightly to ensure all of the filling stays inside and they don’t open up when in the air fryer.
  • Air frying the egg rolls at two temperatures ensures that they get extra crispy, like ones that are traditionally fried.

Cheesesteak Egg Rolls Recipe | Episode 1128

Heat a large skillet over medium- high heat until very hot. Add steak and let cook on one side without disturbing, then proceed to cook until meat is cooked through. Take care not to overcook your steak so it remains tender instead of tough. Once cooked, transfer meat to a fine hole strainer/sieve and remove any excess liquid by pressing down on the meat mixture with a spatula. This last step is super important because excess liquid in the Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls will result in a wet and soggy wrapper which means it will likely tear when folding or cooking.

What Kind Of Meat Do You Use For Philly Cheesesteak

Traditionally, thinly sliced rib eye is used for Philly cheesesteak sandwiches which is what were using in these egg rolls. If you dont want to use rib eye, you could try sirloin or flank steak, or even ground beef for a different take on this dish.

The meat mixture is spooned into egg roll wrappers along with some provolone cheese. The egg rolls are then folded up and are ready to be fried.

Never folded an egg roll before? Theres a handy reference guide on the back of the egg roll wrappers! My store typically carries egg roll wrappers in the refrigerated case in the produce section.

After your Philly cheesesteak egg rolls are folded up, you can fry them immediately or cover them and store them in the fridge for up to one day before frying.

What Kind Of Steak Should I Use For Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls

I usually use rib-eye or top round.

I slice the raw beef very thin.

Some meat departments will do it for you, if you ask them.

When ready to cook, lightly oil a cast iron skillet and cook the beef over medium, until a temperature of 145 degrees with a thermometer.

I love using the ThermoPop from ThermoWorks.

It has a rotating display which is GREAT for so many things.

This thermometer I use almost every single day in the kitchen.

From candy making, to jellies and jams.

Meat, chicken, seafood and even broths and soups.

Can I use different meat to make Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls?

If you want to save a couple of dollars, you can totally do with a thinner, cheaper cut of meat.

It can often be tougher, so when I do that, I usually slow cook the steak in a crock pot or in the oven until it basically falls apart.

You can buy a lot of meat that way and youll make lots of egg rolls.

So it is a more cost productive way to make them for a crowd.

Since all Air Fryers are different, when testing this recipe, start the cooking time a little lower until you know how long it needs.

I need 6 minutes total, and I flip at the 3 minute mark.

How To Make These Cheesesteak Egg Rolls

Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls
  • Prep the steak. Whenever Im making classic Philly cheesesteaks or these cheesesteak egg rolls, I typically buy pre-shaved ribeye steak from Trader Joes. You can usually find other stores carrying shaved ribeye steak but if not you can buy a pound of ribeye steak and slice it yourself. Getting razor thin slices of your ribeye steak is easy! Place your steak in the freezer for about an hour to firm up. Then use a super sharp knife to slice the steak into thin strips. After that, lets ground it up!
  • Ground the steak. I add the shaved steak into my food processor to break it down into a ground steak texture . Since these are cheesesteak egg rolls and not actual cheesesteak sandwiches I find that longer slices of steak just dont work as nice. Alternatively, you can use a sharp knife/meat clever to chop the steak up into a smaller, more finer texture, if you dont have a food processor.
  • Sauté the veggies. Cook the onion + bell peppers and then set aside.
  • Brown the steak. Add the steak into the skillet and brown.
  • Combine the filling. Toss the sautéed onion + bell peppers back into the skillet with the meat and season the mixture.
  • Assemble the egg rolls. Get those egg roll wrappers ready and fill the egg rolls! The video demonstrates how to do this step flawlessly .
  • Fry the egg rolls. In the home stretch of things! Once the oil is hot, fry up those egg rolls- they achieve that perfectly crispy texture within minutes!

What Dip Should I Serve With Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls

They crispy exterior and hearty filling of these Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls are begging to be dipped in a creamy counterpart, and nothing is better, in my humble opinion, than your favorite cheese sauce. I use homemade queso blanco but you can also purchase queso blanco . That being said, these egg rolls are also fabulous dipped in barbecue sauce and even Asian chili sauce!

Cheesesteak Egg Rolls Have All The Flavors Of The Classic Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich In A Crispy Shell And Made With Ground Beef

Cheesesteak Egg Rolls are basically the perfect fusion of American fast food and Chinese fast food in one. We love this recipe because theyre so easy to make and you can make enough for dinner tonight and then freeze an additional giant batch for the next three times you crave them!

I have been on an egg roll kick recently, so when I looked in the fridge and saw ground beef and my counter had an onion and green bell pepper sitting on it I knew we would be eating Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls for dinner. One of my favorite takeout options, the years I spent in college in Washington, DC definitely introduced me to the delightful world of cheesesteak subs.We used to take day trips into Philadelphia to decide between Pats and Genos . Takeout places were open daily until 4:00 am in our neighborhood, they always had 2 for $10 sales for subs, fries and drinks. One place was so memorable, Manny and Olgas, that when we moved back to DC for a few years it was one of our first food stops.

    Air Fryer Cheesesteak Eggrolls

Cheesesteak Eggrolls, made with thinly sliced beef, cheese, bell peppers and onions are a tasty appetizer made in the air fryer. Serve them up with a spicy dipping sauce!

Update: This recipe was originally posted in November 2011. The recipe and photos have been updated and republished in December 2021.

I have always been a fan of egg rolls, whether they are the classic kind you get with Chinese take out, or something more creative like a cheesesteak in an eggroll. But I have never been a fan of frying them in oil. Which is why this recipe is so great! The air fryer replaces a skillet or deep fryer and the egg rolls are just as delicious!

Cheesesteak eggrolls can be served as an appetizer for a holiday or on game day, as an easy weeknight dinner!

    Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls Ingredients

These Philly cheesesteak rolls are easier to make than you might think! Heres what goes into them:

    • Egg roll wrappers: Commonly found in the refrigerated produce section of the grocery store, often at an end aisle or even with the salad dressings. If you cant find them just ask, because they are there!
    • Sirloin or flank steak: Youll need to thinly slice the steak against the grain. I recommend sirloin if you are going to be marinating less than one hour.
    • Steak marinade: Made of Italian dressing, Worcestershire sauce, onion, garlic, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes.
    • Mushrooms: are optional for the mushroom lovers. Any variety will work.
    • Green bell pepper: A must when making Philly cheesesteak-anything.
    • Jalapeños: Deseed and devein the peppers so theyre not too spicy.
    • Cheese: shredded provolone and sharp cheddar. You can purchase a block of provolone from your deli counter then shred it yourself.

Roll The Crispy Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls

Next, using a pastry brush or just your fingertip, brush the egg wash along all four sides of the wrapper. Lift the corner of the wrapper facing you over the filling, and then gently fold the side corners in, pressing down so that they stick to the first corner. Now, tightly roll the egg roll away from you, so that it forms an even cylinder. Press down all of the edges to seal, and you’re done!

Continue like this until all of your crispy Philly cheesesteak egg rolls have been rolled.
