How To Order a Philly Cheesesteak (in Philadelphia)
This is a delicious and easy sandwich that gets rave reviews from my husband and brother. The garlic mayo is both easy and delicious.

Provided by Tera

1 pound beef round steak, cut into thin strips
2 green bell peppers, cut into 1/4 inch strips
2 onions, sliced into rings
salt and pepper to taste
4 hoagie rolls, split lengthwise and toasted
1 package shredded mozzarella cheese
1 teaspoon dried oregano

Steps:

  • In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise and minced garlic. Cover, and refrigerate. Preheat oven to 500 degrees F .
  • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Saute beef until lightly browned. Stir in green pepper and onion, and season with salt and pepper. Saute until vegetables are tender, and remove from heat.

Types Of Cheese To Use

Cheez Whiz is the cheese of choice in a classic sandwich, mostly because it melts nicely on top of the meat.

Two other types of cheese that have won the approval of the public are provolone and American cheese. Its easier to achieve the oozing, melted cheese consistency of Cheez Whiz with any of these two types.

If youve previously followed a Philly cheesesteak sandwich recipe at home and youre already in the mood to experiment, you can see whether other types of cheese would work. Weve seen friends try it with Swiss cheese and liked the result!

Don’t be afraid to experiment because after all, its a matter of personal preference, right? Based on our experience, wed stick with the top three Cheez Whiz, provolone, and American cheese, in that order.

Some of us can go for one of our Italian Specials loaded with extra cheese, but others may prefer a vegan cheesesteak on a gluten-free roll. The Creation Of The Cheesesteak

Pat’s King of Steaks® was founded by Pat Olivieri in 1930. Pat had a modest hot-dog stand at the base of the famous Italian Market in South Philadelphia. One day he decided to have something quite different for lunch, so he sent for some chopped meat from the butcher shop. He cooked the meat on his hot dog grill, placed the meat onto an Italian roll, and dressed it with some onions. Just as he went to take a bite, a cab driver who ate a hot dog everyday asked what he had there. Pat said that it was his lunch. The cabbie insisted that Pat make him one.”Hey…..forget ’bout those hot dogs, you should sell these.” The steak sandwich was born. As the years passed, both employees and customers alike demanded change…cheese was added.

Since then, the cheesesteak sandwich has become synonymous with the Philly Cheesesteak. And we’re proud to be the reason for it. Nearly 90 years later, Pat’s is still owned and operated by the Olivieri family at our only location in South Philadelphia. Stop by the next time you’re in the neighborhood to enjoy an original, classic cheesesteak.

Philly

Steeped in history, culture, and the arts, Philadelphia also boasts one of the countrys top food scenes. Before you go visit the City of Brotherly love, make sure you know how to order a cheesesteak like a Philly local.

I grew up in the Philadelphia suburbs of Delaware County, PA. Thats Delco in local parlance. Growing up, ordering a cheesesteak was second nature, like breathing. Not until I went to college in the South did I learn how much artistic license had been taken with both the name and the filling.

Lets get down to basics with the authentic way to order a real cheesesteak.

Which Is Better Pats Or Genos

The Mushroom Cheesesteak wit onions and cheez whiz is the clear winner between the two rivals. I loved how authentic Pats sandwich tasted. The bread helped soak up the cheese perfectly and the texture was just right. The way the sliced steak is stacked gives it a much better bite than the organized stack at Genos.

Lightly toasted hoagie or Italian long rolls add that extra crunchy bit of deliciousness to the Philadelphia cheesesteak sandwich. Slice the rolls in half to open them up, but make sure not to slice too deep so as not to separate them.

Spread either butter or garlic butter on the insides and pop them in the oven to toast them. Alternatively, you could also lightly toast them on the pan. Be careful not to burn them though.

How To Make A Philly Cheesesteak

If you cant get to Philadelphia easily to pick up a cheesesteak sandwich, then your next best shot is to make it at home! The layout of the sandwich is simple , but the details are important. Here are a few key things to consider when making your sandwich:

    • You want your steak to be thinly sliced. If possible, you can have your butcher shave it for you. At home, you can stick the steak in the freezer for 10 minutes to make it really stiff and then shave it with your sharpest knife. Trim off any large pieces of fat, but some fat is good.
    • The original cheesesteak can be ordered with only steak or with steak and onions . Personally, I like onions and bell peppers, so I do both. You can make it your own since you are making it at home!
    • The onions and peppers need to cook much longer than the steak so cook them first, separately and then combine everything together with the cheese to finish the dish.

    So What Is A Cheesesteak

A cheesesteak always one word consists of a long, crusty roll filled with thinly sliced, freshly sautéed ribeye beef and melted cheese. The art of cheesesteak preparation lies in the balance of flavors, textures and what is often referred to as the drip factor.

For many fans, the definitive cheese of choice is Cheez Whiz®, but American and provolone are widely accepted alternatives. Other common toppings include sautéed onions, cooked mushrooms, ketchup and sweet or hot long hots peppers.

There are lots of creative takes out there on this regions specialty sandwich, too, but here we focus on where to get the classic Philly cheesesteak.

Below, our picks for notable spots dishing Philly cheesesteaks are organized by area so you can sample more than one cheesesteak on any visit.

Heres the lowdown on where to find some of the best authentic cheesesteaks in Greater Philadelphia.

Philly-style steak sandwiches have made their way around the globe. You may find them listed on menus as Philly cheesesteaks,Philly subs,Philly steak sandwiches, steak Philly, and the like. These are Philly-inspired steak and cheese sandwiches. They are not, however, cheesesteaks.

So how do you order a cheesesteak in Philly? It breaks down into two main components: the cheese and the add-ons.

  • The cheese. You can only choose from American, provolone, or Cheese Whiz. Those are the only options.
  • The add-ons. You can choose toppings like fried onions a cheesesteak wit , a few hot pickled peppers, and thats about it.
  • Here is an example of someone ordering a plain cheesesteak with extra American cheese, onions and hot peppers: Ill take a large cheesesteak with extra American and hot peppers, wit.

Variation: If you are eating at a cheesesteak-only establishment, you can leave out the cheesesteak mention altogether and just say Ill take a large, extra-American and hot peppers, wit.

    How To Cook The Meat

The most important tip we have here is not to overcook the meat. It is quintessential that the dish is served with tender, melt-in-your-mouth meat. We have a couple of tips for this part first, make sure that the meat is sliced as thinly as possible, as mentioned in the section above.

Second, make sure to heat the pan first before cooking the meat. Only use medium or medium-low heat to avoid burning or overcooking. Third, remember to keep stirring the meat in the pan.
