How This Mom Saves On Groceries Without Clipping Coupons
I wrote a few weeks ago about how to load coupons onto a Cub Foods Rewards card, then I wrote about saving an extra $5 just for loading a coupon onto your Cub Rewards card.
I actually haven’t shopped since I wrote that last post, and it’s definitely time to plan a trip to the grocery store to pick up a lot of essential items that we’re running low on.
I know there are grocery coupons for everything out there, but the truth is, it’s easy to find coupons for convenience foods and prepackaged meals. It takes a bit more legwork to find coupons to save on produce, wholesome dairy products and other, simpler groceries.
On top of the extra work it takes to find the coupons for fruits, vegetables and dairy products, the art of organizing and clipping coupons overwhelms me. I know from experience that I ended up clipping far more coupons than I actually used, and organizing all of them was beyond my capabilities.
Thankfully, our grocery list this time around is fairly simple: fresh fruits and vegetables, milk, cheese, yogurt, meat, bread and possibly a few snacks. When I visited the Cub Foods Rewards site to see what kind of money I could save I wasn’t expecting to find much. After all, I wasn’t buying cereal or frozen foods .
I was surprised and excited to find a nice variety of coupons I could load directly to my Cub Rewards card to instantly save money at checkout! Here’s what I loaded onto my card:

STILLWATER The story of Charley Hooley is the story of the grocery trade, of business savvy and good fortune that sparked innovations in the industry nationwide. Some led to the way we grocery shop today.
In 1968, with brother Jack and brother-in-law Robert Thueson, Hooley co-founded Cub Foods, a chain credited with concepts like the first grocery store check-out conveyor belt system. But it was decades earlier the entrepreneur got his start.
I started when I was 8 years old, selling the Saturday Evening Post going door to door, then selling used bicycles, then on to used cars, and then a popcorn stand on the corner of Myrtle, Hooley said. Making a go of that popcorn wagon and horse, purchased for $73, was the hardest thing I ever did.
The family business
At 83, Hooley represents the fourth generation of his family in the food business. In 1853, his great-grandfather Dennis left famine-decimated Ireland for a better life. He settled in the vicinity of County Highway 5 where a Cub Foods stands today, and began delivering meat to lumber camps in the St. Croix Valley.
In 1876, Dennis who upon the birth of his firstborn changed the family name from Whooley to Hooley opened a small meat market at Fourth and Churchill Streets, delivering meat by horse and buggy to residents of Stillwater and Bayport, according to Charley.

Effects From Albertsons Merger
As part of SuperValu’s acquisition of New Albertsons, including its Chicago-based Jewel-Osco stores, SuperValu divested its Chicago-area Cub Foods locations to an investment group headed by Cerberus Capital Management, to avoid market concentration issues. Since Cerberus took control, four locations closed, and Cerberus then announced that it was selling the remaining Illinois stores to other operators. The last of the Chicago-area Cub Foods stores closed on December 10, 2006. A majority of them were sold to Central Grocers Cooperative and operated as Strack & Van Til and Ultra Foods by a wholly owned unit of the cooperative, and as Garden Fresh Markets by one of its members others were sold to Grand Mart International Foods. However, only four of the eight stores sold to Grand Mart opened under that company’s ownership, and all were closed after less than five months of operation. Central Grocers Cooperative subsequently went bankrupt in 2017.
Cub Foods once had multiple locations in Illinois, including stores in the Peoria metropolitan area. In 2009, a Peoria-area store closing drew controversy, as the city was liable for a portion of the initial project. A single location remains in Freeport.
