The Best Steak In New York City | Best In Town

178 Broadway, Brooklyn

If youve heard of one famous New York steakhouse, youve heard of Peter Luger. Opened in 1887 by Peter and his nephew Carl, the restaurant quickly became a neighborhood favorite especially to local manufacturer Sol Forman, who loved Lugers so much that he was known to eat as many as three steaks a day there.

After Peter Luger passed away and the restaurant fell into disrepair, Forman purchased the building and reopened the steakhouse in 1950 under his management. Formans family shepherded the restaurant to a new era of success, refining the beef selection process to earn a Michelin star and decades of loyal customers.

Still run by the Forman family, the best steakhouse in New York is known for their thick-cut bacon appetizer, jumbo shrimp cocktail, tomatoes with proprietary Luger sauce, special German fried potatoes, and oh yeah insane cuts of beef.

Try the Steak for Two paired with Creamed Spinach for a perfect, classic chophouse meal. Confession: I didnt even like steak until I tried one from Peter Luger. Join Sol Forman and I and get into the cult of Luger!!

They do not accept credit cards as payment here.

Keens has been around since 1885, but unlike some other legacy steakhouses, the food here is actually good. Even if youre primarily here for steak, you should at least get the appetizer-sized Taste of Mutton, the thing that Keens is actually famous for. It comes with heady, crisp bits of fat and a jar of mint jelly thats the color of actual mint and not a melted neon green crayon. The wedge salad is great, the porterhouse has an impressive bark, and you should not skip the coffee cantata sundae to close out your meal. The only things we dont love at Keens are the fries and creamed spinach, both of which are a bit bland.

Skirt Steaks concept is simple: Make people wait in line, then reward them with steak, peppercorn béarnaise, and unlimited fries. This restaurant pretty much only serves one thing. For $35, you get a Bibb lettuce salad, sliced skirt steak , and unlimited fries served tableside from a big copper bowl. There are no other ordering decisions to be made, aside from whether you want to add drinks, a couple sides , or a slice of blood orange cheesecake or chocolate tart from the roving dessert cart.

Nyc Steakhouses That Are Better Than Peter Luger

Why Peter Luger Is The Most Legendary Steakhouse In NYC | Legendary Eats

The New York Times restaurant critic, Pete Wells, has a reputation as a discerning tastemaker who isnt afraid to express his honest opinions, whether good or bad. As a result, hes been responsible for a small but significant number of total takedowns of high-profile restaurants . A few weeks ago, Wells added another famous spot to his less-than-illustrious list: Peter Luger, an iconic Brooklyn steakhouse with a 100-plus year history and notoriously lofty prices.

When Wells dropped Peter Lugers star rating from 2 stars to 0 stars, he encountered plenty of differently minded New Yorkers who were appalled by his drastic devaluation of this legendary city eatery. But heres the thing: Wells is right. Peter Luger is far from disastrous, but its steaks dont qualify as exceptional, their side dishes prove even more lackluster, and the overall service standard simply doesnt pass muster.

Some dishes here may break with tradition, but offer nothing short of tasty results. The menu showcases a sense of depth by going beyond the eponymous dish, which is served three ways. Others are firmly footed classics, served alongside creamed spinach, roasted garlic, and butter-laden mashed potatoes. Bookend your meal with cocktails and a wedge of Valrhona dark chocolate pie in an Oreo-cookie crust.

First-timers here should head for the Butchers Feast where youll get four different cuts of beef and a luscious egg soufflé thats a meal in itself. The USDA Prime meats are first presented raw for you to admire their marbling and color. Your server then rubs the smokeless grill with oil before expertly cooking them. The supporting cast of accompanying flavorsfrom the kimchi to the ssamjangare all there to enhance their succulent and persuasive flavor even further.

Gallaghers fresh sparkle is exhibited by the display kitchen, set behind glass panes. The chefs here turn out contemporary-minded fare like hamachi crudo with a yuzu-jalapeño vinaigrette to go with choice cuts of meat grilled over hickory. The rib steak is a bone-in ribeye that arrives mouthwateringly tender with a side of warm and savory house sauce.

Famous Sammys Roumanian Steakhouse

Some Peter Luger regulars point to the restaurants very specific energy and aesthetic as a reason for their loyalty and, to be sure, an eaterys vibe sometimes proves more memorable than its food. Thats definitely the case with Famous Sammys Roumanian Steakhouse, a super-quirky spot on Manhattans Lower East Side specializing in Jewish comfort fare. This basement restaurant opened in 1975, and the decor hasnt changed a bit since then: fluorescent lighting, low ceilings, and elaborate collages of business cards are what youll find here. As far as food and drink go, Sammys serves up skirt steaks loaded with minced garlic, which pair perfectly with ice-block-encased bottles of vodka.

  • Keens Steakhouse
  • Keens is located on W 36th Street and 6th Avenue in Midtown. This classic New York City steakhouse has a colorful history that began in 1885. In what was then the Herald Square Theater District, Albert Keen opened Keens Chop House. His connection to the stage made the restaurant a popular spot for actors and famous personalities like Babe Ruth and John Barrymore.

As far back as 1933, Keens has been praised in the New York Times, Herald Tribune, and New York Post for its famed mutton chops. Most recently, the restaurant received the James Beard Foundation 2013 Americas Classic Award.

To this day, guests rave about the mutton chops. I also recommend trying a porterhouse steak and a Keens pale ale from their pub. Come hear fun stories about Keens long past and enjoy some of the best steaks in NYC.

Just off of the Williamsburg Bridge in Brooklyn, at the corner of Broadway and Driggs Avenue is the classic Peter Luger Steakhouse. Opened in 1887, its popularity grew as the neighborhood did.

After Peter Luger died in the 1950s, the place came to disrepair. It was purchased and refurbished by the Foreman family, who still runs it to this day. The Foremans high standards have earned Peter Lugers a Michelin Star. Theyve also been voted No. 1 Top Steakhouse by the Zagat Guide for 30 years in a row.
