Dohack’s In South St Louis County Festus

Dohack’s Family Restaurant in Crystal City was a landmark for many as shown in this 2002 photograph.

As a family-run restaurant, Dohack’s was in business for more than 80 years. It was famous for its atmosphere, jack salmon and hillbilly bran muffins.

With locations in Festus and South St. Louis County, Dohack’s was an area favorite.

But in 1993 the family closed its original restaurant in south St. Louis County and in 2002 changed the Festus location to Cisco’s, its more famous and younger cousin.

And then Cisco’s morphed into Tanglewood Steakhouse, which is the most current incarnation.

Things You Need To Know About The Steak N Shake Franchise

Shifts to Quick-Service Format

1. Steak n Shake made headlines in the fall of 2018 when it announced a massive refranchising initiative. It wasnt the proposed structural change, though, that garnered news it was the fact Steak n Shake put locations on the block for $10,000 in hopes of fostering a single-operator system similar to the one Chick-fil-A built an empire on.

2. At the end of 2019, chairman of the board Sardar Biglari estimated it would take roughly three years to transition 400 or so company-run stores to a network of franchise partners. Since then, most of the attention has centered on Steak n Shakes store closures, mounting losses, and declining traffic: 107 restaurants were temporarily shuttered as of December 31, 2019.

3. Biglari provided some updates in the companys 2019 annual report. Among the key points, Steak n Shake still plans to reopen most of the temporarily closed restaurants, he wrote in a letter to shareholders. Only theres one big update: Theyre all going to be counter service.

4. Steak n Shake has deployed servers since its 1934 debut in Normal, Illinois. All models were sit-down for the companys first 78 years. A quick-serve format arrived in 2012 and grew through universities, casinos, airports, gas stations, shopping centers, and other nontraditional outlets. By the end of 2018, there were 87 quick-service locations including international operations.

How Much Money Are Franchise Partners Making

In 2020, the average franchise partner earned $161,079 with some on track to make more than $300,000 in their first year alone. We spoke with Press McDowell, a St. Louis, Missouri franchise partner, who shared, I earned in two months what I made in a year at my previous job.

When asked about the $10,000 one-time cost to join the program, he stated, It is the best investment I have made in my life close to 20 times that amount in the first year.

Says Steak n Shake CEO Sardar Biglari, Doubtless, a good number of our partners will become millionaires. But make no mistake: We are not minting millionaires but are merely providing the meansthey are earning every penny.

Are You A Good Fit For The Steak N Shake Franchise

Single St. Louis area Steak n Shake reopens after many temporarily close

You must first determine whether or not you are competent and experienced enough to develop and run a franchise. Opening a business is no easy task, but Steak n Shake might be the perfect way to get your feet wet as a business owner.

To determine if this is the correct business opportunity for you, ask yourself the following questions:

Are you able to liquidate your assets? This franchise, fortunately, just requires $10,000 in liquid money to get started. However, keep in mind that when you include in royalties and advertising fees, as well as construction and building maintenance costs, your investment will reach several hundred thousand dollars.

Are you qualified to lead this company? This position is for you if you have no other business ventures, restaurant management expertise, a dedication to excellent performance, and a love for customer care.

Another thing to think about is the place where youll be running. Ideally, youll be taking over an existing lucrative location. There will be additional risk involved with the site if you are requested to restart a business with no previous client base.

Make sure to do your own research and consider whether the place youre being given is worthwhile.

Finally, are you open to owning a franchise in part? Only franchise partners are allowed in Steak n Shake locations, which means youll get 50% of the revenues. This may appear to be unfair, yet it is actually a significant benefit for you.

Steak N Shake Reopens One Of Its Restaurants

Steak n Shake said Friday that it reopened one of its St. Louis restaurants under the companys franchise partnership program.

The Indianapolis-based burger chain was able to refranchise the restaurant under Linda Metz, who reopened the location Monday. The location has set a grand reopening celebration for Tuesday.

Steak n Shake has been a staple in St. Louis for many years, and I am so thrilled to continue the brands legacy while fulfilling my dream of owning my own restaurant, Metz said in a statement.

The reopening is an important sign for Steak n Shake, which is owned by investment firm Biglari Holdings.

The chain operates about two-thirds of its 600 locations. But its undertaking a complicated and rare initiative to refranchise those 400 company-owned restaurants.

It plans to sell all of those restaurants to single-store operators who pay $10,000 and then split the profits with the franchisorafter they go through a lengthy and rigorous training regimen.

Traditionally, restaurant chains refranchise with multiunit operators. In this instance, Steak n Shake is trying to shift from a mostly company-run operation into a fully franchised system under a model similar to uber-popular Atlanta-based chicken chain Chick-fil-A.

Reports since have suggested closures total at least 60. Sardar Biglari, CEO of Biglari Holdings, reportedly said at the companys annual meeting earlier this year that there could be more closures.
