Easy Salmon Steak Recipe
Looking for a lean, protein-packed dinner that is still loaded with flavor and totally rich? THIS Salmon Steak recipe with Spicy Whipped Feta is the perfect dinner.
I served this recently at a family dinner and everyone from my in-laws to my 3-year-old daughter cleared their plates. It was the perfect dinner that felt really special and took less than 30 minutes.
Salmon is a go-to protein for me because it’s rich in omega 3 fatty acids, can easily take on many delicious flavors, and is family-friendly. Thick-cut salmon steaks are easy to cook so let’s do it!
Prep The Fresh Salmon
Remove the salmon from the refrigerator and place the steaks on paper towels. Use another paper towel to dry the top of each steak off. Then, brush each steak with a bit of olive oil or unsalted butter to keep it from sticking on the grill. Now is the time to toss some salt, pepper, and your other choices of seasoning onto both sides of each salmon steak.

How to Bake Salmon from Frozen
- Preheat the oven. Position an oven rack in center of the oven and preheat to 450 degrees F.
- Rinse the salmon fillets under cool water. Do this to remove any ice thats formed on the outside.
- Bake for 8 minutes, then season.
- The salmons done when its opaque throughout.
How To Make This Recipe

Start by seasoning the salmon steaks on both sides with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. Be sure to sprinkle both from at least 6 inches over the salmon for more even coverage. I also like to season our fish with a little garam masala which adds a wonderful warmth to the dish, but simple salt and pepper will work just fine and let the meat shine through with its own wonderful flavor.
To cook the salmon steaks, my favorite method is to heat a large skillet over medium-high heat just because I can do it year round and it’s quick and easy. But the same timing and approach works if you want to grill salmon steaks, which is fun when the weather is nice.
Start by heating either a large pan or grill. Starting the salmon on a hot surface helps it to sear better, which also helps the salmon not stick to the surface.
When the pan is hot, add a little olive oil , then arrange the steaks in the pan and let them sear without moving. They need to cook between 3-5 minutes on the first side and should release pretty easily when they are ready to be flipped.
Carefully flip them to the other side with a large spatula and let them cook another 3-5 minutes until opaque in the center. Be careful not to let the fish overcook or it will be dry. I like to stop just shy of fully opaque because the residual heat finishes cooking the salmon while it rests before we eat.

How To Grill Salmon
Best for smoky flavor and super crisp skin, the grill is a great way to cook salmon when the weathers fair. Just make sure you clean the grates of your grill and oil them before starting to cook, otherwise your salmon can easily stick. Preheat the grill to medium high, place the sinless side of salmon down on the grates and let the salmon cook. Dont touch it itll release itself from the grill when its ready. When it does, use a flat spatula to flip the salmon over. Need some inspiration? Check out Food Network Kitchen’s Sweet and Spicy Grilled Salmon, Grilled Cedar Plank Salmon and Indoor-Grilled Salmon. Alternatively, if you value smoky flavor but not the stress of your salmon potentially sticking to the grates, you can wrap up a side of salmon in tinfoil and place the foil pack straight on the grill. Grilled Skirt Steak With Mustard
Serves 4
- 1 skirt steak
- 0.5 c. mustard green
- Chimichurri , for serving
Pour 0.25 c. of oil into a small bowl and grate in the garlic using a Microplane. Add the salt, pepper, and onion powder and stir to thoroughly combine.
Place the skirt steak on a tray or in a large bowl and rub the oil mixture all over. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or up to overnight.
When youre ready to get cooking, remove the steak from the fridge and let it sit at room temperature for five to 10 minutes.
Prepare a grill for high heat or heat a large grill pan over high heat. Drizzle a paper towel with the remaining 1 tbsp. oil and use the towel to oil the grates. Lay the steak crosswise over the grates and cook until grill marks develop, 3 to 4 minutes, then flip and cook on the other side until you have nice dark grill marks, another 3 to 4 minutes. This should result in medium rare meat, so cook a minute or so longer if you prefer. Transfer the steak to a serving platter and let rest for 3 to 4 minutes before slicing on an angle across the grain into thinnish slices.
Serve immediately with the chimichurri.

How Long Does Salmon Steak Last
Salmon steak is easy to make, and even easier to store. If you love planning meals for the whole week, these steaks are perfect for you.
You can make them ahead of time and keep them in the fridge for 3 days.
Its best to let the salmon, vegetables, and sauce cool before refrigerating. We also recommend storing them in separate airtight containers to prolong shelf life.
Let The Visual Cues Guide You

When pan-searing, the bulk of the cooking takes place while the salmon is skin-side down. After its been cooking for a few minutes, youll start to notice the color of the fillet slowly begin to change. Starting from the bottom, where the skin touches the pan, and working its way upward along the sides of the fillets, youll see the flesh lighten from deep, dark pink to a much more pale color.
This change in the color of the flesh will act as your indicator for how the cooking is progressing. Once the color change has moved up about three-quarters of the way from the bottom, its time to flip. Since the bulk of cooking has already happened, the salmon will cook for a couple minutes more after flipping it flesh-side down. What youll get is a tender and flaky piece of salmon, cooked perfectly to medium, with super-crispy skin.
Take the salmon fillets out of the refrigerator.

Is It Better To Bake Or Pan Fry Salmon
I would just bake it, but thats just me. Its wonderful both ways, but for optimal tender, flaky moistness, brush filets with a little olive oil, salt and pepper, and bake until just slightly under-done and let rest under foil to finish cooking. It really doesnt take long to cook it fully in the pan.
Difference Between Salmon Steak & Salmon Filets
Both salmon steak and filet come from the same part of the salmon. The only difference is how it is cut. A salmon steak involves cutting through the back bone. A filet cuts the meat of the salmon from the bone.
One salmon steak is typically two portions of salmon filet.
For this recipe, I use salmon steak. But you could use either a salmon filet or salmon steak. Both work really well and result in a delicious baked salmon sheet pan dinner.

Different Cuts Of Salmon
First, what is a salmon steak? It’s basically cut crosswise and includes the bone. You would more typically find the salmon fillet at the grocery store – but a salmon steak is worth a try for many reasons.
This cut of salmon is thicker than a fillet, and because of that doesn’t fall apart as easily.
Since it’s cooked bone-in, this, as a rule, yields a more flavorful protein than meats cooked without the bones.
Ingredients In This Baked Salmon Steak Sheet Pan Dinner
Salmon has a very distinctive flavor that pairs well with different seasonings. For my baked salmon, I go with a garlic butter sauce. It is the perfect compliment to the salmon.
For the recipe, you need to have salmon steaks cut to about 8 ounces a piece. You should remove the bones or have your butcher remove them for you. You will also need asparagus which you will cook with the salmon and the garlic butter.
To make the garlic butter sauce, you only need a few ingredients, many of which you will probably already have on hand. They include:
- butter or ghee
- grated parmesan cheese
- chopped fresh parsley
Finally, youll need a little bit of salt and pepper to sprinkle on the salmon and asparagus prior to adding the butter sauce.

Setting Up Your Grill For Success
Before youre ready to start grilling, you should know how to prepare your grill to cook the very best salmon it can. You can use either a charcoal or gas grill, but its challenging to replicate the smoky flavor you get when you grill salmon on a charcoal grill. Still, its your choice.
Whatever grill you choose, youll want to prep the grill by making sure the grates are cleaned well from your last grilling adventure. Then, add some olive oil to the grates to prevent sticking. You can even salt and pepper them for seasoning if youd like. Then, fire up the grill and allow it to reach at least 450 degrees for a couple of minutes before putting your salmon on the grates.
Some people choose to cook salmon on a wood plank to both get extra flavor infused into the fish and keep it up off the grates to avoid sticking. This isnt necessary, especially if you season the fish well before cooking and oil your grates and salmon. However, if you have an old grill with worn-down grates that have become nearly impossible to keep clean, it might be best to try a cedar plank salmon or a salmon in foil recipe, both of which well talk more about below.

Can I Grill Frozen Salmon Steaks
You can purchase frozen salmon steaks for use on the grill, but you cant grill them in their frozen state. Not only can they cause dangerous grill flare-ups as they thaw and drip liquid, but theres also a good chance that they wont cook evenly.
If you do choose to buy frozen salmon steaks, make sure youre buying quality ones. The steaks should be vacuum-sealed to prevent loss of flavor and moisture, keeping them as close to their original state as possible. They should also be brightly colored, just as youd see fresh salmon in the butchers department.
Follow the package instructions for thawing. Usually, you can thaw it in the refrigerator overnight on a plate away from other foods.
