The Real Taste Of South Philly

How to create the perfect Philly cheesesteak

More than just your typical Philadelphia cheesesteak joint, Tony Lukes redefined the Philly sandwich experience with specialty favorites like the roast pork Italian and chicken cutlet. The cheesesteak was not on the menu originally the citys love for cheesesteak prompted the Lukes to make their own version which has stayed a best seller since the addition to the menu in mid 1992. Tony Lukes menu now includes chicken cheesesteaks, seasoned french fries, hamburgers and more.

Geno’s made a fine cheesesteak.

Its freshness stood out from Tony Luke’s, but again, that was to be expected due to the stadium experience of my first sandwich of the day.

Like Tony Luke’s, Geno’s opts for a slightly thicker cut of steak. Hefty slices of meat lining the sandwich provide a series of satisfying bites.

Ps: What To Do If Youre Craving A Cheesesteak During A Flyers Game

This is a great question. Your main options during a game are the less than ideal Aramark generic offering and the brand new Delco Steaks. From our very own Flyperbole frontman estebomb, he says the new cheesteak from Delco Steaks pretty good steak! Great soft seeded roll. Meat was diced nicely, not super diced, Id call it a medium dice. I think it would be very good hot and not at a stadium. B+ stadium steak.

Genos has an outpost at Xfinity Live!, but your best option may still be hitting up JRP, which is open until 7 p.m. and is just an 8 minute drive from the stadium.

Angelos Pizzeria South Philly

A post shared by Angelo’s Pizzeria on Aug 3, 2017 at 8:37am PDT

Now this is the newest New Kid On The Block. Angelos was originally set up in Haddonfield, NJ, but eventually moved into the friendly confines of South Philly. They are making freaking WAVES. Everything you order from here is fantastic, from the pizza to the hoagies, to the chicken cutlet sandwiches. There is no skimping on toppings or meat. The bread is practically a delicacy itself. Properly seeded, crusty outside and a luscious hollowed out pillowy inside. The cheesesteak here is definitely a work of art and it is beyond the wait for this cash only, limited seating establishment . This is one of the places that is actually worth the hype.

Two Owners Of Tony Lukes Philadelphia Cheesesteak Restaurant Plead Guilty To Conspiracy To Defraud The Irs

Tony Luke

PHILADELPHIA United States Attorney Jennifer Arbittier Williams announced that Anthony Lucidonio, Sr., 84, of Philadelphia, PA, and Nicholas Lucidonio, 56, of New Jersey, pleaded guilty today before United States District Court Judge Gerald McHugh to charges related to their conspiracy to defraud the United States for the purpose of impeding, impairing, or obstructing the Internal Revenue Service in the assessment and collection of employment taxes. The defendants, who were indicted in July 2020, are owners of Tony Lukes, a cheesesteak and sandwich restaurant located in South Philadelphia. In pleading guilty, the defendants admitted to participating in a tax fraud scheme to evade payroll taxes between 2006 and 2016.

According to a plea memorandum filed with the court, the government intends to prove at the defendants sentencing hearing that the government lost between $550,000 and $1.5 million as a result of the defendants scheme.

This tax fraud scheme victimized honest taxpayers in two ways: first, by hiding the restaurants revenue from the IRS and second, by avoiding employee payroll taxes, said U.S. Attorney Williams. Tony Lukes is an iconic brand in our region, but that is no excuse or explanation for the fraud these defendants perpetrated. We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to investigate and prosecute these types of crimes.

Youve probably driven by this place on the way to another cheesesteak establishment and/or a sporting event and never gave it any notice. Its right there off Columbus Avenue on the banks of the river. You get not only a great sandwich, but a terrific view as well. The last time I had a cheesesteak from here I recall being very inebriated and believing it was one of the best I ever had. On a repeat offering , I found the sandwich to be good, not great. There isnt truly anything that sets it apart from the rest.

For $11 I Got Another Steak Whiz Witout For My Third Meal Of The Day

First, apologies for the photo quality of this shot with our car parked next to Geno’s, I had run back over once I made my purchase at Pat’s but felt uncomfortable eating Pat’s steak at a Geno’s table. Some lessons learned in my younger years have stayed with me.

Regardless, Pat’s impressed. While the distribution of cheese could have been a bit more even, the cheesier side of the sandwich was divine. Next time I might order extra cheese, though given my goal of four steaks in one day, the idea seemed ill-advised at the moment.

The bread was superb, allowing for all parts of the sandwich to meld together in harmony. And while the steak came a bit more chopped than at Geno’s or Tony Luke’s, it still offered plenty to chew on.

More than any sandwich so far in the day, this one came just seconds off the grill and was devoured almost as quickly as it was prepared.

Why Original Tony Luke’s In South Philadelphia Is Changing Its Name

Taste Test: Tony Luke’s Cheesesteaks

PHILADELPHIA — Everyone knows Tony Luke’s cheesesteaks. But the original store in South Philadelphia is changing its name.

The name change is happening after 30 years in the business. It all stemmed from a family fallout which then brought on trouble with the IRS.

The original Tony Luke’s in South Philadelphia is currently in the process of changing its name. The counter-serve shop on Oregon Avenue, which is well-known for its Philly cheesesteaks and other subs, will now be known as Tony and Nick’s Steaks, after the owners Anthony Lucidonio Sr. and his son Nicholas Lucidonio.

This name change stems from a family fallout that eventually led the father-son duo into hot water with the IRS.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, back in May, the two pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud the IRS by concealing sales and paying employees off the books.

Lucidonio’s Sr.’s other son, Tony Luke Jr., split from his father and brother back in 2015 after a family fallout and currently owns Tony Luke franchise restaurants in multiple states. He has no ties to the guilty plea or any IRS problems.

On the franchise website, it reads “the restaurant location at Front Street and Oregon Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is not affiliated in any way with the Tony Luke’s brand or franchisecompany and is independently owned.”

The change is currently underway and should be fully changed soon.

The Definitive Ranking Of The Top Cheesesteaks In Philadelphia

Editors Note:

Updated to include Cosmis deli in the rankings Updated to include new cheeseteak option at WFC Updated to include Oh Brother Philly in the rankings

This is it. After reading this list you will never have to look at another cheesesteak ranking in your life. Bookmark it, share the link with your friends, or heck, print it out and put it in your neighbors mailboxes. After years of research and developing a specific scientific method on evaluating our beloved cholesterol-busting monstrosity, a definitive ranking of the best cheesesteaks in the Philadelphia area has been completed. Grading a cheesesteak, you must break it down into the following components in this specific order:

1. Quality of the bread2. Quality/flavor of the steak3. Distribution of cheese/onions

I tend to order my cheesesteaks the same way wherever I go, which is with American cheese and fried onions. While I dont think there should be any specific rules for how a cheesesteak can be enjoyed, as a connoisseur this is what I use as my base test. You can substitute another cheese . Fried onions are a must. I dont hate, but I understand folks that enjoy bell peppers and mushrooms. Regardless of the toppings they MUST be incorporated into the meat. None of that laying it on the top crap. Lastly, you want to make sure the roll is crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. Props to the establishment if they scoop out the extra breading inside to ensure maximum meat capacity.

Geno’s Bright Lights Make It Impossible To Miss From A Few Blocks Away Though Things Weren’t Too Busy When I Arrived

Geno’s is catty-corner from Pat’s King of Steaks, its fierce rival.

In my experience, Philadelphians’ preference between these two purveyors of cheesesteaks comes down to which you tried first in your youth.

While many heated debates over which reigns supreme have been had, I can tell you with total confidence that both make a fine sandwich. If you have a strong preference, by all means, patronize one over the other but should one line be absurdly long, shuffling to the other side of the street won’t be a disappointment if you’re in a rush.

Reviews For Tony Luke’s

Not the place to go if you’re in a rush as they have no sense of urgency when they forget to make your order. There was one girl there who seemed concerned. Food was OK though.

Tony Lukes was awesome. Best cheesesteak Ive ever had. I walked from Terminal A all the way to F to try this place because it had the better reviews. I wasnt let down. It was smashing!!!!!Tip! Take the bus at terminal C and skip the walk.Enjoy!!!

The Best Philly Cheesesteaks with Tony Luke | SAM THE COOKING GUY

Tony Luke’s was at an immediate disadvantage compared with some of the other cheesesteaks that would be eaten this day, as its sandwiches are pre-wrapped to make for a more efficient purchasing process at the stadium. This meant that the fried onions came on the side and that the cheesesteak lacked a bit of that “fresh off the grill” brightness that is a vital component of the sandwich.

After Some Work The Cheesesteak Was Satisfying Especially Given The Atmosphere Of The Ballpark

Once I had constructed my cheesesteak with onions and a few hot peppers, it was a delight.

The ratio of meat to cheese was sound, and while it wasn’t as fresh as you’d typically desire a cheesesteak to be, the ambiance of the ballpark and a Phillies win went a long way in making Tony Luke’s a positive experience.

I would not ordinarily recommend starting your day with a cheesesteak, but after skipping breakfast and dealing with car trouble on the way to the stadium, I found Tony Luke’s was a beautiful and tasty respite from a chaotic day.

Tie: Pats King Of Steak/genos Steaks

Keep in mind, both of these establishments are poor examples of a cheesesteak. They exist because of the history between them. Pats has the claim of inventing the cheesesteak and Genos across the street has … a gaudy exterior? An awful owner? Im not going to lie, if you are visiting Philly and want to do a cheesesteak trail, you have to come here just for the sheer experience of seeing this fake rivalry and tourist trap in its full glory. The cheesesteaks themselves feature disappointing rolls, not enough meat and miserable employees. The major selling point is buying one of each and deciding which one is better, I guess? Want to know the true winner? Its not you.

Joes Steak + Soda Shop

Here is the true King of the Northeast. It had gone by another name up until 2013 and thankfully lost that moniker. Regardless of the name, the shop is still serving up some of the best cheesesteaks and shakes in the city. Nothing like ordering your sandwiches and waiting outside watching them work their magic on the grill. It feels as nostalgic and old-school as you can get. Nothing is lost on the quality of the ingredients and care that it is to make a sandwich like this. You may not want to, but its worth the trip up 95 to visit.

Its everything you want a cheesesteak to be. The only issues with it are that its in Roxborough and not immediately in my mouth right now. It consistently makes all the best of lists and for good reason. It has even been featured on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Celebrity endorsements are usually never as good as they wind up being, but here is another exception. My first time experiencing Dalessandros was on a Cheesesteak Tour a couple years ago. This happened to be our first stop . It has really made a lasting impression ever since.
