Today, Independence Hall remains one of the most important and well-preserved symbols of the birth of America, and its a must-do for anyone visiting Philadelphia. Admission is free and by tour only. Timed entry tickets are required from MarchDecember. Directly across the street from Independence Hall, youll find the Liberty Bell, which once tolled the sound of freedom in Independence Hall . We would be remiss to bring up Philadelphia without mentioning cheesesteaks. On an iconic intersection in the Passyunk Square neighborhood of South Philadelphia, two of the citys most iconic cheesesteak places happen to lie catty-corner to each other, basically staring each other down. With Genos Steaks on one end of the ring, and Pats King of Steaks on the other, you have to try them both and make the judgment call for yourself. Order wit or wit-out onions, but definitely get the cheez wiz.
So What Is A Cheesesteak
A cheesesteak always one word consists of a long, crusty roll filled with thinly sliced, freshly sautéed ribeye beef and melted cheese. The art of cheesesteak preparation lies in the balance of flavors, textures and what is often referred to as the drip factor.
For many dedicated cheesesteak consumers, the definitive cheese of choice is Cheez Whiz, referred to as, simply, Whiz, but American and provolone are widely accepted alternatives. Other common toppings include sautéed onions, ketchup and sweet or hot long hots peppers.
There are lots of creative takes out there on this regions specialty sandwich, too, but here we focus mostly on where to get the classic Philly cheesesteak.
Below, our picks for notable spots dishing Philly cheesesteaks are organized by area, so you can sample more than one cheesesteak on any neighborhood outing.

Visit Eastern State Penitentiary
This former prison was so harsh with many inmates in solitary confinement, even being taken outside for exercise with a bag over their heads so they would see no one.
The idea, of course, was that they would become penitent.
The most famous inmate was Al Capone, the 1930s Mafia gangster who was allowed to have luxuries in his room like a desk, chair, lamp and floor rug.

Get Lost In The Charming Backstreets
When you get away from the downtown city center, its not hard to stumble upon quiet alleyways with picturesque row houses. We fell in love with the postcard-worthy web of historic streets when we turned off of busy Locus Street and onto S. Jessup Street. It was like walking back in time. S. Jessup, Irving and S. Quince are filled with classic, colonial redbrick homes adorned with colorful front doors, matching shutters, and American flags flapping in the breeze.
Discover Outstanding Lebanese In Phillys Foodie Hotspot
Without a doubt, Fishtown is the burgeoning epicenter of cultural and culinary creativity in Philadelphia. Forbes even called it the hottest zip code in America no ones ever heard of. The neighborhood, located northeast of Center City and Old City, is home to some of Philadelphias best restaurants, including Suraya. This Lebanese restaurant and market serves up tasty Middle Eastern small plates like baba ganoush, hummous and taboulé on their all day menu. But we suggest going with friends for dinner to enjoy their great cocktails and outstanding lamb. Their Kawarma, baharat-rubbed slow roasted lamb with pomegranate-cucumber salad and dill yogurt, is one of the most flavor-filled dishes weve ever feasted upon.

Climb The Rocky Steps
No visit to Philadelphia would be complete without shouting Adrienne!! at the top of the famous steps to the Philadelphia Museum.
Youll find a statue of Rocky Balboa with tourists lining up for photos to the right of the steps, and it would be rude of me not to do the same.
Youll also get the best view over the city from here. Its a popular spot for wedding photos too, but beware of tourists doing the Rocky behind the bride.
Inside the museum youll find some cool Medieval cloisters that have been installed and another section of Asian art with a Japanese tea house. This is not currently serving tea, however. Constantine tapestries, presidential china, horse and rider armory and European and American art.

Breakfast At Reading Terminal Market
As luck would have it, Reading Terminal Market happened to be only two blocks from our hotel Le Meridien.
We could have had breakfast at the hotels restaurant of course , but Reading Terminal Market is a jumping hive of edible activity.
Its been here since 1892 and is a farmers market where you can buy fresh produce and flowers, but more than that, its row-upon-row of food outlets ranging from Amish cakes and pastries to French crepes, cheesesteaks and burgers. A cheap and very cheerful start to the day.
