S: A Normal Beginning

Customer speaks out after Steak ‘n Shake fight

The business that would grow into the Steak n Shake chain began in the early 1930s in Normal, Illinois, in a Shell gas station. The stations owner was Gus Belt, an Illinois native who had owned a tire distributorship before going into the service station business. In 1932, looking for a way to make his station more attractive to motorists, as well as to supplement his income, Belt hit upon the idea of running a small restaurant in conjunction with the gas business. He began offering customers all the chicken they could eat, along with french fries and cole slaw, for 45 cents. For an additional small charge, thirsty travelers could wash their chicken down with a glass of beer.

Soon, however, the nearby Illinois Normal State Teachers College began objecting to beer being served so close to campus. When the college threatened to shut down Belts small operation, he and his wife secured a $300 loan and used it to turn their gas station into a real restaurant. In February of 1934, the Belts opened their new eatery, renamed Steak n Shake. The steak in the name referred to the restaurants hallmark sandwich, the steakburgermade with real cuts of T-bone, strip steak, and sirloin, ground up, formed into patties, and grilled. The shake referred to thick vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry flavored milkshakes, prepared with ice cream the Belts made themselves.

Future Ideas To Implement

The hard thing to swallow is that there are always more ideas and features to implement. Time only allows for so many ideas to be fully tested and used. Its part of the beauty and difficulty when designing digital products. Here are a few ideas we could see being implemented in the future:

  • Server screen that identifies which table pressed the button first and who should be served first. It could help the servers stay organized.
  • Expanding the button for all drink orders or even anything a table needed a server for at a given time.
  • A milkshake light that adjusts its brightness depending on how long the table has been waiting for their shakes.

Steak ‘n Shake: Stop Intimidating People Who Complain About Bad Customer Service

On February 23rd, 2013, my wife and I stopped in at the Mount Prospect, IL Steak ‘n Shake for a quick breakfast. There were, at the time, fewer than a dozen other customers, at four or five tables, in the restaurant. We were seated, and waited for someone to take our order.

We waited… and waited… and waited some more. Everyone else in the establishment had already been served, and a server came out twice to refill coffee cups, but she never came to our table.

We are not invisible. We are a clean, presentable middle-aged couple who just wanted a bite to eat.

After almost fifteen minutes I tired of being ignored, and walked to the door, yelling toward the kitchen that I was taking my business elsewhere. My wife called out for a manager, but she too was ignored.

The following day I submitted a complaint on Steak ‘n Shake’s corporate website, and received an email shortly thereafter stating that the issue would be forwarded to the district manager, who would be contacting me.

After nearly three months, having received no contact from the district manager, I again went to their corporate website on May 19, 2013 and submitted another complaint urging them to refer to the incident number I had been assigned in February, and wondering why no one had contacted me.

THIS is how Steak ‘n Shake responds to complaints.

Please sign this petition to let Steak ‘n Shake know that they can’t treat customers as criminals for pointing out flaws in their customer service.

Burger King’s Motion To Dismiss

Most Valuable Restaurants Ranked by Survey

Also before me is Burger King’s motion to dismiss, which I will deny as moot because Steak n Shake recently amended its complaint. Even if the motion were not moot, I would deny it anyway because it encompasses matters outside the pleadings. I do not believe that there are no facts that Steak n Shake could prove to establish its claims. Burger King’s arguments would be more appropriately addressed in a motion for summary judgment after both sides have had an opportunity to take further discovery.

Scheduling And Adr Referral

As is my common practice when ruling on preliminary injunction motions, I will immediately refer this case to Alternative Dispute Resolution. The parties have spent a great deal of time and money on the preliminary injunction phase of the case. From the discovery undertaken thus far and the arguments made, both parties should have a very good understanding of their own case and of their opponent’s case. From a business point of view, resolving the case at this point would allow the parties to get back to selling burgers and to stop spending enormous sums on litigation expenses.

I expect the parties to make solid and good faith attempts to resolve this case before they embark on the expensive discovery and motion practice necessary to get this case ready for trial on the merits. During the preliminary injunction phase of this case, there were frequent disagreements over things that should have been resolved without much discord, and there were frequent accusations of sandbagging and tactical abuse of the rules. If this behavior continues during the mediation period by either party I would not consider that to be good faith compliance with the referral to ADR. I expect both counsel to specifically discuss this paragraph with their clients, as I expect the clients to understand that sharp practices increase the expense of litigation.

Increased Empathy For Servers

Steak ‘n Shake worker shot to death during attempted robbery in Charlotte

Its our hope that our milkshake light design helps Steak n Shake customers be empathetic to the Steak n Shake servers because they will be able to look around the restaurant and see how many milkshake lights are on and how busy their server is at any given moment. For our milkshake light we focused on using the existing retro milkshake glass and then lighting it up with the Steak n Shake vintage neon red lights already seen around the restaurants nationwide.

Why Some People Think Steak ‘n Shake Is Failing

Steak ‘n Shake is a great example of change not always being a good thing. The chain started back in 1934, and their main selling point was right there in the name: their burgers were made from steak . Unlike other burger stands of the time, Steak ‘n Shake put a huge emphasis on the quality of their ingredients, even going so far as to grind the steaks into patties right in front of their customers to prove they were selling the best of the best . This strategy served them well for decades, with the store expanding from one location to almost five hundred by the early 2000s, despite changing hands several times.

The downswing began around 2008, when Steak ‘n Shake was purchased by Biglari Holdings Inc. Bilgari switched the chain’s focus to lowering costs and increasing efficiency, a model that took a toll on the quality of their food, and their customer service. Steak ‘n Shake has been struggling since to regain its lost success, even getting close to bankruptcy in early 2021 . However, despite being bailed out by Biglari earlier this year and recording a profit in the first quarter of 2021, customers are still convinced that Steak ‘n Shake is failing. Here’s why.

Wait Times Are Frustrating

Steak ‘n Shake’s success is predicated on the fact that it can get its food out fast. But, according to customers who sounded off online, the chain’s speed of service falls far behind its peers.

On , the sentiments are similar: “‘Steak & Wait’ as my friend has called it.”

The Chain Has An Identity Crisis

Steak

Steak ‘n Shake is a confusing place for some. It’s a fast-food chain with a drive-thru, but also has table service. In the end, it doesn’t seem to be satisfying its customers on either front.

A YouTube user pointed to the fact that the wait and the price don’t seem to be congruent: “It’s like they don’t know what their identity should be. It’s not acceptable for the only customer in the drive-thru to wait 25 minutes for their food and pay 30% more than you would at any other fast food place. They should remove the drive thru, up the quality of the food, and be the good late night burger joint.”

Government Needs To Shut Down Steak And Shake Franchise

I am a former employee, or how I consider it, a former slave. The kids that walk through the door and “manage” and treat employees as property and harass, and degrade them. The legality of their management needs to be reviewed by the service bureau, and shut down.

S60s: Expansion And Ownership Changes

Steak ‘n Shake giving away free fries to customers

By 1943, there were 15 Steak n Shakes. Most were located in Illinois, but at least one was doing a booming business in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Most of the sites were company owned, although Belt had allowed for a few franchisees. In the late 1940s, Steak n Shake expanded into St. Louisan area that was to become a major market for the chain. Between 1948, when the first St. Louis store opened, and 1954, the Belts opened ten highly successful restaurants in the city, making it the location most heavily populated with Steak n Shakes. Belt financed the St. Louis growth by making a public offering of the companys stock, but the Belts themselves continued to own a controlling interest.

In 1954, Belt died of a heart attack. He left the Steak n Shake chainconsisting of 24 restaurants in Illinois and St. Louis, and one restaurant each in Daytona Beach, Florida and Hot Springs, Arkansasin his wifes hands. Edith Belt ran the business exactly as her husband had, adhering carefully to the standards and practices he had established. During the 15 years under her leadership, Steak n Shake gradually expanded to include 51 locations in Illinois, Missouri, Florida, and Indiana, but little else changed.

Reasons Customers Are Fed Up With Steak ‘n Shake

Customer complaints about Steak ‘n Shake range from long wait times to lower quality food to poor service, all reasons that former fans might stop frequenting the burger joint. As one Reddit user wrote: “I love Steak n Shake but my biggest problem is that every one I go to is SO SLOW” . Another was quick to agree, adding: “After 3PM it’s useless trying to get anything from Steak n Shake, there’s probably two workers there, ten cars in the drive thru, and you’re gonna get the wrong order.”

Others outright claimed they stopped going because the food had changed, writing: “I stopped going because their food kept getting worse. I used to love their steakburgers, but they would decrease in size every few months. Their shakes got downright unpleasant. Now, I’d rather have Jack in the Box for burgers” .

Complaints about poor service are also common, which some ex-employees reveal might have been because Bilgari implemented a $12 hourly wage cap for non-managers and cutting hours, a choice that increased staff turnover and saw the chain loose some of its best cooks . The result? Slow service, inexperienced staff, and lower-quality food. Hopefully Steak ‘n Shake can learn from all of this consumer feedback and start to turn things around before it loses any more customers.
