Money Is No Object Is Something Not A Lot Of People Can Actually Afford To Say

$100 Per Pound Costco Japanese Wagyu Steak Is It Worth It?

A basic Costco membership is $60 per year, which isn’t too bad as long as you shop there enough to make it count. According to one Clark Howard producer, buying tires, wine, movie tickets and baby formula at Costco definitely makes it worth the annual fee, and saves you lots of money in general, versus buying these things at other stores. Getting gas at Costco is another smart move, and prescriptions are usually way cheaper there . Even milk by the gallon is a better deal that eventually adds up if you go through a lot. But of course, it all depends on what exactly you’re interested in buying, and how much of it you can realistically consume. Non-perishables are safe bets, as long as you have room to store them, but things with shorter shelf lives, like fresh vegetables or gargantuan hunks of cheese, can easily go bad before you use them all.

Even Costco employees admit some things aren’t worth buying at the store. Happily, steak is not on that list — well, not by name. It is a perishable, but one you might actually have occasion to cook all at once , or which you can otherwise preserve .

As to the cost of the steaks themselves, in general, all Costco meat prices will be cheaper per pound than at specialty butcher shops and certain grocery stores like Whole Foods and ALDI, but potentially on par with or even more expensive per pound than what you’d pay at, say, Safeway or Walmart .

Walmart’s Ground Beef Doesn’t Get The Best Reviews

Not only is Walmart’s ground beef not the cheapest, it can also tend to be lower quality than the fresh stuff you get elsewhere. All the meat sold at Walmart is what is known as case-ready, according to the The New York Times. This means that it is prepared and packaged at a meat packing plant rather than by an in-store butcher department. While case-ready meat may have a longer shelf life than meat prepared onsite, it owes this stability to treatments involving carbon dioxide and saline solution… not so tasty.

All of these reasons still not enough for you? Well, the consumer reviews on Walmart’s website tend to be pretty negative, too. One purchaser of the five-pound roll of 80 percent lean beef found “a lot of gristle/rubbery pieces in the meat,” as well as “a huge 5 ounce chunk of fat the size of my palm,” although did give the beef a two-star rating because “my dog likes it okay.” Another reviewer noted that “the meat had so much gristle in it that it was hard to choke down,” while still another said it was “too fatty and cooks down too much,” leading her to suspect it was filled with water or, more likely, a saline solution, which, as mentioned, is used in the preparation of case-ready meat.

How Much Would An Individual Eat

We suggest you prepare to cook around one pound of Standing Rib Roast per person when expecting guests. This is also the recommended amount from big stores like Costco. Of course, this portion will be enough for most people, while children, people on a diet, or light eaters should have even less than that.

When cooking for guests this is the price to be ready for per person and in total when shopping from Costco:

Costco Stocks Both Usda Prime And Usda Choice Cuts

USDA Prime certification is awarded to a relatively small fraction of all U.S. raised beef — the standard number cited for several years was 2 percent, but according to Serious Eats, now the Prime label is given to more like 3 to 3.5 percent of all U.S. beef, meaning it’s easier to find in stores these days, Costco included, although it’s still more expensive wherever it’s sold.

Prime beef basically has the highest amount of marbling and is younger. USDA Choice is the next step down, thus more affordable, but is still great quality beef in fact, some consider it the better option, because while it may not be quite as tender, there’s a bigger, beefier taste, and a lighter hit to your wallet.

Which specific cuts you find in your local Costco will vary some shoppers suggest you’re more likely to see extra-impressive cuts on weekends when the store is busier, but you’re pretty likely to always spot old favorites like rib-eye and sirloin, two steaks that happen to be great for grilling.

Some other low prices spotted at Costco: USDA Choice New York steak for $10.99 per pound and USDA Prime New York steak for $21.99 per pound.

Beef Short Rib Details

Marketside Butcher Wagyu Beef Ribeye Steak, 0.48

At the grocery store, most short ribs will be labeled as beef chuck ribs. However, you can find plate or prime meats at specialty stores such as oriental markets and butchers. Most local butcher shops offer one to ten-pound packs of meat while wholesale clubs sell by the case in 50-100lb bags.

Beef short ribs are one of the most nutrient-dense meats you can eat. A single three-ounce serving has nine grams of protein, 180 milligrams of sodium, and 70 grams of protein while being low in fat due to its high nutritional content such as vitamins B6, B12, Phosphorus, and Selenium.

Aldi Vs Walmart: Meat

For many Americans, meat is a staple at any meal table. In fact, we consume an average of 274 pounds of meat per year!1 But meat isnt cheap. If youre intense about getting out of debt, you can save a lot of money simply by consuming less of it. And if its something you just cant give up, heres the Aldi vs. Walmart breakdown on popular types of meat:

What If You’re Not A Costco Member

If you’d like to peruse their steak options in person but aren’t a member , you can get in the door with Costco gift cards — but you might need to ask an existing member to purchase them for you first. Or just tag along with a kind friend or family member who holds the keys to the Costco kingdom. Failing that, try ordering from Costco through Instacart or where available .

And whenever you do finally get your hands on some steak, wherever it’s from, find great ways to cook it here.

Check For Marbling And Shape

Every cut is different, so look at the meat carefully to make sure you pick a good package. You want one with a uniform thickness throughout the flat edge at the bottom. Look at the point cut to see if the fat is evenly marbled because a brisket with big, uneven chunks of fat can cook poorly and get dry in spots.

A Lower Price Per Pound Is Great But When You Have To Buy In Bulk The Total Price Can Still Be A Bit Of A Shock

WAGYU Beef Ribeye Steak from Walmart Review | Is it worth it ?

Economically, it helps to buy whole roasts or loins and carve them into steaks yourself, but even then, theyre usually hefty, and hence, more expensive as a single purchase . For an extreme example, on the Costco website, you can find imported Japanese wagyu boneless rib-eye roasts for about $82 per poundbut you have to buy 11 pounds at once, so youre dropping $900.

If any amount or form of wagyu is out of your price range, $24.76 per pound for USDA Prime dry-aged porterhouse and strip steaks from Rastellis at Costco sounds much betterbut they come in 8-count packages, so thats still $259.99.

Luckily, shopping in the store and buying the Kirkland labeled steak will net you significantly lower prices and more reasonable amounts of meat the average package of steaks of all varieties in my Costco seemed to be around five pounds, with outliers both lighter and heavier. So a pack of Choice rib-eye steaks would cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $50. Thats obviously worth it to many, end of story.

Join A Warehouse Club

If you have something like a Costco, BJs, or Sams Club in your area, it might be worth your while to join. The amount you pay in membership fees could end up paying for itself when you take into account all the savings. The thing to keep in mind about buying brisket at a warehouse club is that it is cheaper, but you can usually only buy in bulk. Expect to find briskets weighing more around 12 to 20 pounds instead of the lighter ones that are six to eight pounds.

So Should You Buy Your Steaks At Costco

The answer is that famous cop-out that also happens to be true: Only you can decide!

If money is no object , getting your steaks and other meat from a trusted, skilled, local butcher is probably always the best bet, but if you want high quality at a lower price per pound, arent worried about dealing with excessive quantities, obscure origins, or blade tenderizing, and you can get in to shop at a Costco, then make haste to their meat department.

Impossible Foods Joins Beyond On The Shelves Of Walmart Americas No 1 Meat Seller

Beef Top Sirloin Steak Family Pack, 1.15

Plant-based alternatives from Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat sit on a shelf for sale in New York … City.

WMT s busy butchers just got some fresh competition.

Impossible Foods beef alternative launches in 2,000 Walmart locations today, a few days after it nabbed distribution at Trader Joes, putting the plant-based protein products on the shelves of Americas biggest meat seller.

Its a crowning achievement in a year that has seen Impossibles reach soar from 150 grocery locations at the start of the year to more than 8,000 locations across all 50 states, one of the few companies to benefit from the pandemic. The company remains far behind plant-based competitor Beyond Meat, which has been sold at Walmart since 2016 and can be found at 25,000 grocery locations in the U.S.

There’s no more important institution in retail food than Walmart, CEO and founder Pat Brown says, citing how 90% of Impossible customers are meat-eaters. It sells best when its placed in the fresh meat department. That makes perfect sense because our consumers are looking for meat.

Impossibles sales have boomed since stay-at-home orders began in March, and particularly as meatpackers around the country struggled with major outbreaks of Covid-19. An estimated 38,000 workers have been infected and at least 171 have died during the pandemic, according to the Food and Environmental Reporting Network, leading to factory shutdowns.

Buy A Whole Side Of Beef

One option if you really love beef and really want to save money is getting a whole side of beef. This usually involves ordering from a website or specialty shop, and you will probably need a deep freezer to hold all the meat. You pay a flat rate of somewhere between $3 to $5 per pound and get a variety of cuts, including brisket. Keep in mind that the majority of your order will not be brisket though. You will definitely get some very nice brisket at a very cheap price, but youll also end up with a bunch of ground beef, steaks, and roasts.

Prices soared, supply chains buckled, shoppers panickedand plant-based food manufacturers capitalized. While plant-based meat still accounts for less than 1% of total meat sales, refrigerated alternatives like Beyond and Impossible were up 241% during the peak of meat panic-buying this spring, as grocers curtailed meat purchases amid supply fears.

Now that meat prices are approaching pre-pandemic levels, Impossible is betting on scale to bring down its costs and make it more competitive with commodity beef.

At Walmart, Impossibles soy-based product will cost $7.94 per pound, at least to start . Beyonds frozen beef alternative, meanwhile, which is non-GMO certified and made from pea protein, sells at Walmart for $5.48 per pound. Its fresh burger comes in at $4.84 per pound.

After hitting record highs, industrial beef ground prices are currently at $3.39 per pound this week, while burger patties cost an average of $5.28 per pound.

Impossible expects to give monthly updates on how prices will continue to decrease, but declined to say whether the company was close to going public amid the expansion and raising $1.3 billion to date. Given Beyond Meats share price rising 175% since its IPO last year, theres quite the appetite.

No offense to our investors, Brown said, I spend zero time thinking about that.

Why You Should Never Buy Ground Beef At Walmart

While Walmart may be your best one-stop shopping destination for those occasions when you’ve just got to pick up a cremation urn, a fursuit and, oh yeah, some groceries, there are still a few things you should really shop for elsewhere, and no, we’re not talking about those embarrassing products you probably purchase online anyway. No, it’s just that Walmart’s grocery line, while extensive, has a few items that are best purchased at a grocery store that actually specializes in food. Ground beef is definitely one of the top items you should not pick up on your next Wally World run.
