The Definitive Ranking Of The Top Cheesesteaks In Philadelphia
Updated to include Cosmis deli in the rankings Updated to include new cheeseteak option at WFC Updated to include Oh Brother Philly in the rankings
This is it. After reading this list you will never have to look at another cheesesteak ranking in your life. Bookmark it, share the link with your friends, or heck, print it out and put it in your neighbors mailboxes. After years of research and developing a specific scientific method on evaluating our beloved cholesterol-busting monstrosity, a definitive ranking of the best cheesesteaks in the Philadelphia area has been completed. Grading a cheesesteak, you must break it down into the following components in this specific order:
1. Quality of the bread2. Quality/flavor of the steak3. Distribution of cheese/onions
I tend to order my cheesesteaks the same way wherever I go, which is with American cheese and fried onions. While I dont think there should be any specific rules for how a cheesesteak can be enjoyed, as a connoisseur this is what I use as my base test. You can substitute another cheese . Fried onions are a must. I dont hate, but I understand folks that enjoy bell peppers and mushrooms. Regardless of the toppings they MUST be incorporated into the meat. None of that laying it on the top crap. Lastly, you want to make sure the roll is crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. Props to the establishment if they scoop out the extra breading inside to ensure maximum meat capacity.
Best Cheese For Cheesesteak
I highly recommend trying white American cheese on your cheesesteak sandwich. It adds a creamy, melty, and salty quality to the cheesesteak that really completes the sandwich.
Other popular choices include smoked provolone slices or cheese whiz. I suggest using your favorite – it’s your sandwich after all!

How To Make Philly Cheesesteaks With Peppers And Onions
The process is easy! Youll need a large, deep sauté pan to start. If you dont have any large sauté pans, a Dutch oven will do the trick.
I love to add bell peppers and onions to add a burst of color and a ton of flavor to these tasty cheesesteaks.
Heat vegetable oil over MEDIUM-LOW heat and sauté thinly sliced onion and bell pepper. You want to avoid browning the peppers and onions so if they do begin to brown, reduce the heat under the pan a bit. When they are nice and tender, transfer them to a large dish and set aside.
Add additional oil to the pan and then add half of the chopped sirloin to the hot pan. Season with a little Lawrys Seasoned Salt, or your favorite all-purpose seasoning, and a little garlic pepper. Cook and stir until browned and then transfer this first batch of browned beef to the dish with the peppers and onions.
Repeat the process with the remaining beef and seasoning. Transfer the second batch of browned beef to the dish and drain any juices from the pan.
Return the pan to the heat and transfer the cooked veggies and beef to the pan. Place sliced provolone over the top and cover the pan to allow the cheese to melt
Use tongs to mix the melted cheese throughout the beef and veggie mixture and its time to load up those hoagie rolls!
The Original Tony Lukes
Its kind of funny because if we were ranking their different food options , it would be higher up. Their breakfast offerings, chicken cutlet sandwiches and roast pork are actually pretty good! Why does their cheesesteak not follow similar high standards? Last time I went I clearly saw frozen beef being used and there is no pet peeve bigger than that being used in my cheesesteak. Perhaps theyve gotten better in the years Ive avoided this place? The Original location on Oregon Ave remains under Tony Luke Sr. and Nickys ownership with Tony Luke Jr. having parted ways a few years back. With better options available and closer by, not sure why you would bother going other than to cross another one off the list.

The Best Cut Of Beef For Cheesesteaks
Its important to use a cut of beef that does not require a long cooking time to get tender. Ribeye is a common choice but the cost is beyond what Im willing to spend, especially considering this recipe calls for 2½ to 3 pounds of beef.
My favorite cut of beef for this Philly Cheesesteak recipe is sirloin, specifically petite sirloin. Top sirloin is a wonderful choice but petite sirloin is less expensive and still plenty tender enough to create a fabulous Cheesesteak. Its also a thinner cut so there is a bit less slicing involved. Ive been able to pick up value packs of petite sirloin for less than $4 per pound at my local Safeway. You just cant beat that!
To get a closer look at petite sirloin and see this recipe in action, be sure to watch the video at the end of this post .
Youll need a good, sharp knife to slice the sirloin as thinly as possible against the grain. Once sliced, cut the beef into very small pieces.
Place your sirloin in the freezer for 20 to 30 minutes to make it easier to slice.

Tips For Slicing Steak
This recipe calls for a whole steak, instead of shaved steak. It can be tricky to slice it thinly but we have a simple trick:
Place the steak in the freezer for 15 minutes and then slice the steak against the grain as thinly as possible. You want it to be chilled enough that it slices without squishing, but not frozen so that its difficult to cut.

Youve probably driven by this place on the way to another cheesesteak establishment and/or a sporting event and never gave it any notice. Its right there off Columbus Avenue on the banks of the river. You get not only a great sandwich, but a terrific view as well. The last time I had a cheesesteak from here I recall being very inebriated and believing it was one of the best I ever had. On a repeat offering , I found the sandwich to be good, not great. There isnt truly anything that sets it apart from the rest.
Steves Prince Of Steaks
Ah, the self-proclaimed cheesesteak royalty of the Northeast. Ive eaten at their Center City location a bunch, but never their original until a year or so ago. Its located in a very nondescript area of the city, but was plenty busy when I arrived. I was impressed with this locations offering because it was much better than what I previously had in the city. Steves sandwich is unique in that it is largely unchopped. So you are essentially getting slabs of steak, which makes it a different textural eating experience than others. It is a really good cheesesteak, but not the best in the Northeast by a long shot. They do have a pepper bar if you are into that.

Give These Philly Cheesesteak Grilled Cheese Sandwiches A Try
These Philly cheesesteak grilled cheese sandwiches are so delicious and so much fun to serve. They have all the flavor of a classic Philly cheesesteak sandwich with the twist of a grilled bread instead of a roll. Its a small change that makes a huge difference. Once you try them, Im sure youll agree that these sandwiches are some of the best youve ever eaten.
Philly Cheesesteak Grilled Cheese Sandwiches
My grilled cheese variation on the classic Philly cheesesteak has all the delicious flavors of the time-honored classic with one twist. Its served on grilled bread instead of a role. Thats really the only difference, but what a difference it is. Philly cheesesteak grilled cheese sandwiches have that great classic flavor, but the toasted bread adds a different bite to the sandwich, giving it a sort of old-school afternoon snack vibe.
However you describe this sandwich, its completely delicious and really stays true to the sensibilities of the original, which is so important with a recipe as classic as the cheesesteak.
Just like the original, this grilled cheese variation is simple to make, requiring only a few minutes of slicing the beef and veggies and a few more minutes of cooking it all. Youll be in and out of the kitchen in no time, and everyone will be clamoring to get their hands on more of these delicious sandwiches. Its the perfect combination for any recipe.

Which Is Better Pats Or Genos
The Mushroom Cheesesteak wit onions and cheez whiz is the clear winner between the two rivals. I loved how authentic Pats sandwich tasted. The bread helped soak up the cheese perfectly and the texture was just right. The way the sliced steak is stacked gives it a much better bite than the organized stack at Genos.
