Some people dont like to get messy when eating in a restaurant and I certainly appreciate that. However, youve ever been to a crab shack you know that sometimes it is fun to get messy especially if it makes the meal taste better. They finally put one of those restaurants nearby where they serve you a bag of seafood with your choice of seasoning or sauce. I order my seafood with Old Bay butter and that is messy as all hell. But you know what? I dont care because its delicious. I will be using shell on red Argentinian shrimp from Omaha Steaks for my version of this recipe.

To Make Coconut Shrimp

  • Defrost Shrimp, place in bowl
  • Pat excessive moisture off of the shrimp with a paper towel
  • Season shrimp with 1/2 teaspoon of Old Bay seasoning
  • Place shrimp one by one into the flour/panko mixture
  • Dip shrimp into the egg being to sure to coat entire shrimp
  • Press shrimp into the shredded coconut. Press the shrimp into the coconut to get it to adhere
  • Transfer shrimp to small sheet pan or plate
  • Freeze shrimp for 15-30 minutes prior to cooking
  • Fry shrimp at 350°F until lightly brown on both sides or internal temperature of shrimp is 145°F. Alternatively, air fry the shrimp at 350°F for approximately 8 minutes or until lightly browned.
  • How To Make Sauce Or Dip For Coconut Shrimp

    It doesnt get any easier than this. Mix equal parts of orange marmalade with sweet chili sauce until combined. Both are readily available in most grocery stores. This sauce is very similar to the one at Outback Steakhouse. It is the orange rind pieces in the marmalade that makes me love it so much. As much as I like pineapple, its not my first choice for a dipping sauce. If you dont want the orange flavor, give apricot preserves a try.

    How Long Can Omaha Steaks Stay In Packaging

    If you keep your Omaha Steak package in a vacuum-sealed bag, you can leave it for three months in the freezer. Make sure the meat is not thawed at room temperature! Let it defrost in the refrigerator, which would allow it to retain more of the natural juices.

    Defrosting 1 inch or thicker cuts at 3640 degrees Fahrenheit should take between 1224 hours. If you dont have that much time, quickly thaw steaks under cold running water while they are still in their package, and this should take between 3040 mins.

    I love shrimp. Ive never been a fan of fish. I love to catch them just dont like to eat them. In a time where I rarely dine out, ordering the coconut shrimp leaves me disappointed. Its the equivalent of eating McDonalds french fries after they are cold. I dont care what kind of magical powers you have, no one is resurrecting those fries to the perfection they once were. Same deal with the shrimp. I needed to create my own recipe.

    Air Fried Coconut Shrimp Method

    I tested out multiple ways to both prep and cook these shrimp. If you are trying to cut down on your fat intake, air frying the coconut shrimp is a great option. Whether you are air frying the shrimp or deep frying the shrimp in oil be cautious of what temperature you are cooking them at. The coconut in this recipe is sweetened and sugar burns at high temperatures.

    After singeing the tips of some the coconut in my trials, the best temperature I found when using the air fryer is 350°F. If you prefer to use unsweetened coconut you may technically cook at a higher temperature but they will do just as well at 350°F.

    Prior to adding the shrimp to your air fryer, lightly spray the basket with cooking spray so the shrimp do not stick. I do not flip the shrimp in my air fryer because it gets airflow all around the shrimp. If airflow is a concern in yours or if you need to flip the shrimp so they cook evenly, do it carefully. You do not want to knock off the coating you put on there.

    Fried Coconut Shrimp Method

    If you are frying the shrimp, add about 1/2 inch of oil to the bottom of a skillet. Peanut or vegetable oil will work equally well. Preheat the oil to 350°F then carefully place the shrimp in the skillet. Fry until light brown on both sides then remove from skillet onto a plate covered with paper towels to drain excess oil. Do not skip preheating the oil. If you do, your shrimp will be greasy and saturated with oil, not crunchy.

    A restaurant in Scranton, PA named Coopers Seafood House that had one of my favorite appetizers. Coopers bayou shrimp was a spicy mysterious concoction of deliciousness made in a cast iron skillet. In that zesty sauce were hot shrimp that you could gobble up first. The restaurant gives you a loaf of bread with dinner and you better believe you would sop up that extra sauce in the skillet.
