Lamson Premier Forged Steak Knives

Why America’s Test Kitchen Calls the Victorinox Swiss Army Rosewood Set the Best Steak Knives
Triple-Riveted Acrylic

Product Origin and Manufacturer Information:

Established in 1837 in Massachusetts, the Lamson brand lays claim as being the oldest cutlery manufacturer in the United States. As truly American made as youll find, Lamson handcrafts every knife in their factory in Western Massachusetts.

According to the Lamson brands website, Lamson presented President Ulysses S. Grant with a 62-piece dinner set in 1869. Some parts of the dinner set can still be seen today, as they are on display at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C.

Why We Love Lamson Steak Knives:

Any cutlery fit for a US President is going to cost a pretty penny, but to some Lamson customers, purchasing this set is worth it. These knives are sharp right out of the box, have a beautiful look, and cut the toughest steak with ease.

This knife set from Lamson is available in three different styles, fire, midnight, or walnut. The fire handle is made from triple-riveted acrylic and the midnight handle is made from strong G-10. Everything about the Lamson brand is traditional American, right down to their precision-forged, corrosion-resistant steel using the hot-drop method.

The full-tang blades and triple-riveted handles are luxurious enough for those with the finest tastes. The set comes in an attractive gift box that is easily used as a long-term storage container.

Who We Recommend These Knives For:

Can You Sharpen Steak Knives

You sure can! Steak knives with smooth blades are easier to sharpen than serrated steak knives, but both can be whipped back into shape. You can use a whetstone, or follow the directions on an electric sharpener. Of course, you can always have your knives professionally sharpened. Do so when you notice more pressure or leverage is needed to achieve smooth cuts.

Best Value: Henckels 8

For a quality brand with a full-size set, this Henckels set with eight serrated steak knives has excellent ratings. The larger serrations cut through any food easily with little force, and the triple-rivet handles ensure a sturdy hold for the long run. For home cooks looking to use a solid set of steak knives without breaking the bank, Henckels tools are a great option and come with a lifetime guarantee, too.

How We Picked The Best American

Blade Material

We looked for high-carbon stainless steel for rust prevention and strength, where the blade is sharp out of the box . We also looked for steak knives that respond well to sharpening, a sign of longevity.

Also, carbon content is the most significant influence on steel performance.

Handle

Steak knife handles are made from a variety of materials , but the most important factor is the handle construction and comfort.

Hilt

The area where the blade meets the handle should be well constructed, and without a gap that may make it difficult to clean and weaken the knife.

Liberty Tabletop Modern America 4

Hollow Stainless Steel Handle

Product Origin and Manufacturer Information:

Liberty Tabletop was first started as Oneida Limited in the 1800s. In 2005, the company announced they were closing the factory after over 100 years. To preserve this brand and its American workers, Sherrill Manufacturing purchased Onedia and formed the Liberty Tabletop.

Liberty Tabletop knows how important American made products are to their customers. They take social responsibility seriously, vowing to never move American jobs or their manufacturing processes overseas. Additionally, the brand takes pride in being as earth-friendly as possible, partnering with the One Tree Planted foundation.

Why We Love Liberty Tabletop Knives:

The 18/10 stainless steel blade is the kind of steel that is common in some mid to upper-level cookware for both home and commercial uses. This is not a bad steel quality, but it is not the best in the world, either.

The serrated blade and relatively dense weight of this knife tell us that youll probably cut most meats with relative ease. The Liberty Tabletop brand is not at all famous for its knife-making, but this doesnt mean they make poor-quality knives.

Smooth Knives Beat Out Serrated Ones

Serious Eats / Vicky Wasik

For the main test, I had a group of six people from the Serious Eats team evaluate the knives under real-world, steak-cutting conditions. In the test kitchen, I cooked three different cuts of steakhanger, skirt, and 2-inch-thick New York stripsto evaluate how well the knives performed on tougher cuts of beef as well as thick-cut steaks. I did my best to choose testers of different ages, height, gender, cooking experience, and dominant hand orientation. Before having them cut into steaks on porcelain plates, testers were asked to evaluate knives based on their appearance, and feelhow ergonomically comfortable they were to hold, along with whether they liked the weight distribution, balance, and blade-to-handle dimensions.

Performance was the next criterion testers were asked to slice the different cuts of steak with each knife. After recording observations on performance, participants were tasked with giving each knife an overall grade from 1 to 10, while also writing down how much they would personally be willing to spend on a set of steak knives for themselves, as well as how much they would be willing to spend on a set to give as a nice gift to someone they really cared about.
