Steak Sourcing & Quality

Ribeye Steaks by Kansas City Steak Company

According to their website, Kansas City Steaks serves USDA Prime and Choice beef . They claim to source all of their meat from farms and ranches around Kansas with strict standards for who they work with for a time.

Unlike many other online meat providers, they do not mention the use of hormones or antibiotics given to animals. So, if you are looking at first-rate meat quality from a health perspective, then there may be way better options to purchase.

Are Kansas City Steaks Grass

Kansas City Steaks says that its cows are raised by trusted producers in the golden wheat and cornfields of the Midwest. That means that the majority of beef they use is not grass-fed, instead, it is most likely corn-fed.

With that said, the brands website says that it does carry 100% grass-fed beef, but weeding out which ones are grass-fed and which ones arent is trying, as not every page mentions what the cows diets consist of.

Kansas City Steak Company Review

  • Food Box HQ Rating

Bottom Line

Kansas City Steaks was a bit of a letdown. We paid close to $90 for 4 8oz steaks that were just okay. The funny part was the desserts ended up being our favorite item that we ordered from a steak company.

Pros

They offer a ton of varietyfrom meats to sides to desserts.

Some foods were very delicious .

They have a great money back guarantee. If youre unhappy, you can contact them and they will refund your money or replace the items youre unhappy with.

Cons

It was one of the most expensive meat delivery companies weve ordered from.

The ordering process was a pain and almost led to me overpaying for our food.

The cooking instructions were not that clear.

The packaging could be better.

The flavor of the steaks and some sides could have been better.

These days there are more meat delivery services to choose from than ever before. Having tried dozens of them over the years, I know from experience that not every single one is worth your time or money.

When I stumbled upon Kansas City Steak Company after we reviewed Omaha Steaks, I was intrigued. Not only do they offer a ton of different cuts of meat, they also have a variety of premade meals.

While they have the quantity, do they have the quality to match the high prices theyre charging? We decided to order a box for ourselves to see!

Kansas City Steak Company Cons

Kansas City Steak Company Review
  • Its expensive. I found Kansas City Steak Company to be one of the most expensive meat delivery companies weve ordered from.
  • The ordering process was a pain. In my opinion, their ordering process is very confusing and almost led to me paying more for items rather than getting the discounted rate.
  • The cooking instructions were not that clear. I found the cooking booklet was a bit confusing to read and the section that tells you how to cook the steak doesnt have spacing between the words.
  • Im not a fan of the packaging. First, its all styrofoam, which is terrible for the environment. Second, the boxes that hold the food are not cushioned, which led to our brookies dessert getting a little smashed while in transit.
  • The flavor of the steaks and some sides could have been better. Especially considering we paid close to $90 for 4 steaks.

Where Does Kansas City Steaks Source Their Meats

All of the food that Kansas City Steaks sells comes from National Beef, which has locations throughout Kansas. The beef comes from U.S. Premium Beef, with ranchers across 37 different states. Its not clear whether the cattle the steaks come from are actually from Kansas City or even Kansas.

On the Kansas City Steak Company website, they dont make it clear where any of the other meat comes from. On their All About Steak page, they are pretty vague about the source of their meat, only stating they source from tight cattle supply from producers with known and approved management methods.

Comparing Their Menu Options

Both Omaha Steaks and Kansas City Steak Company have similar nice classic beef and quality meats, such as New York strip steaks, filet mignon, ribeyes, top sirloin, prime rib, and a T-bone with really tasty flavor.

They both also offer high-grade seafood, free-range chicken, turkey, and Berkshire pork for meat delivery.

We love how they both offer exclusive Black Angus all year long, as well. We say that’s one good meal you would want to try and share with your family or give as a gift to close friends. For your party, you can add wine, a variety of country dish sides, and everything’s perfect.

  • Omaha Steaks, we found out that the business may have a more extensive menu that you can place an order on. The company offers offer bison, veal, wet-aged beef, and gourmet burgers for you to cook.
  • Kansas City Steak Company had a less extensive offering when we ordered, but they never ran out of private stock USDA prime beef, prime rib roast, filet mignons, and steak burgers.

Kansas City Steak Company Pricing & Price Comparison

Kansas City Steak Company Review: Are These Steaks Worth It?ð¥©

In my opinion, Kansas City Steak Company is very expensive. When I saw that 4 Kansas City boneless strip steaks were close to $90, I was shocked. Thats over $22 per steak and they were only 8 oz each . To put that in perspective, at $89.95 for 4 8 oz strips, that comes out to $2.81 per oz.

To give you an idea of how Kansas City Steak Company compares to the other meat delivery services listed above, heres a look at all of their boneless strip steak pricing:

  • Omaha Steaks: At $79.99 for 4 8 oz strips, that comes out to $2.50 per oz.
  • Snake River Farms: At $30 for 1 12 oz strip, that comes out to $2.50 per oz.

Comparison: Kansas City Steaks Vs Omaha Steaks

These days, the list of products you can get online is growing. And things that you may have never dreamed of being shipped to your door, are now offered by a plethora of online brands and sent to customers across the country on a daily basis. And this is the case with not only steak but seafood and poultry as well.

The concept may sound a bit out-of-the-ordinary but these brands put the utmost care in ensuring your order arrives frozen and on time. In this section of our Kansas City Steaks review, well be doing a side-by-sidecomparison of our featured brand and Omaha Steaks, a company that has a similar product lineup.

In terms of products, the two seem to be on par. They both offer similar meats, seafood, and sides, and their steak selections include the same cutsbut to be honest, any quality steak company will. So the difference wont be in the selection, instead, well find most of our difference in the price and quality.

How do we assess the quality? We look at what the cow is fed and how its aged. It appears that most of Kansas City Steaks cows are fed a diet of corn, although they do say that some do eat grass.

Omaha Steaks feed its cows a grass-only diet, and that will result in an earthy flavor, whereas a corn-fed diet will produce sweeter meat and a buttery texture. Why does grass-fed tend to be higher in cost? Because it takes longer for the cows to reach their slaughter weight so theyre using up more resources like water and grass.

What Is Kansas City Steaks Shipping Policy

KC Steaks ships to all 50 states. Your order will arrive in a styrofoam box with dry ice that will keep the items fresh for hours after delivery. The brand offers the following shipping options and prices:

  • Standard $20
  • Saturday or 2-Day $25
  • Alaska & Hawaii $40

Your order will be left at your doorstep, so you wont need to be home to receive it.

Kansas City Steak Company Vs The Competition

Its likely you probably already know that Omaha Steaks is the biggest competitor to Kansas City Steak Company. Both are very similar in terms of what they offerbetween steaks, different cuts of meats, gift bundles, and even their websites.

However, there are a ton of lesser-known meat delivery services out there these days that also provide a similar service. Heres a look at some of them and how they differ from Kansas City Steaks:

  • Snake River Farms: Known for their American wagyu beef, Snake River Farms offers a similar service to Kansas City Steak Company but focus more on the higher end meats. What I like about Snake River Farms is that they control their entire supply chain, which means more control over the quality of the meat.
  • Crowd Cow: Like Kansas City Steak Company, Crowd Cow has a ton of variety in terms of meats, sides, and desserts. They sell all the same types of meat in addition to game meat such as boar, duck, and elk. Crowd Cow also sells plant-based meats.
  • Porter Road: When it comes to high-quality meat, its hard to beat Porter Road. I love that they do not freeze their meats when they send them as to not compromise the quality and flavor of the meat.
  • Rastellis: Rastellis is one of my personal favorite meat delivery companies. They offer all the same meats and cuts as Kansas City Steak Company as well as many precooked meat options . What I like most is that theyre very open and transparent about their sourcing practices.

Oz Kansas City Strip Steaks

Kansas City Strip Steak

These were the steaks that we made in our review video above. You can see that they look fairly similar to the strip steaks youd find in your local grocery store. When it came to cooking them, we followed the instructions in the booklet they send along with the food but it ended up leading to them coming out pretty overcooked. While they still had some flavor, they were very tough to eat.

Do They Offer Any Guarantees

They Kansas City Steaks offers a complete satisfaction guarantee for customers. You’ll read on the website that if you aren’t completely satisfied with your steaks for any reason, you can request a replacement or a refund. The nice thing about this is that you have 45 days to claim your purchased item, which is better than companies with similar new guarantees.

What To Know About Cooking

One of the big issues Emily and I ran into with Kansas City Steak Company was the cooking process. They give you a booklet that has all of the information needed to make everything from cooking your steaks to heating up the premade dishes.

When we went to cook the steak, we followed the directions outlined in the booklet since we wanted to make sure we were doing everything correctly so they would come out as delicious as possible.

Unfortunately, the was that the booklet lays out the steps, you have to jump between different pages for different steps. For example, on page 10 it tells us the partial instructions for cooking the steak on a skillet. Then you have to jump to page 12 to see how long you need to cook the steak. But on page 12, they have different cooking instructions at the top of the page.

But the most irritating part was that some of the steps dont have spacing between the words. I found it to be pretty tough to actually follow the directions properly because of this.

Kansas City Steak Company Pros

Kansas City Steak Company Meat Grading

Thankfully, Kansas City Steak Company shares their USDA grading more than Omaha Steaks does.

The beef they sell is primarily USDA choice and USDA prime.

If youre unfamiliar, heres a brief look at the main USDA grades of beef:

  • Prime beef is from young, well-fed cattle. It generally has a lot of fat or marbling.
  • Choice beef is high quality but has less fat than prime beef.
  • Select beef is the leanest beef.
  • Standard and Commercial grades of beef are usually sold as ungraded or as store brand meat.

These grades are important to see since they allow you to know the type and quality of the meat. In my experience, they allow you to cut through all the marketing lingo that a lot of meat delivery companies use.

About Kansas City Steak Company

They first started out in 1932 as a family-owned butcher shop called S& S Meat Company.

They ended up growing in popularity and becoming a meat supplier for big retail businesses such as Outback Steaks and Carrabbas.

In 1984 they shifted focus and decided to venture into the mail order steak business, something that Omaha Steaks pioneered years prior. What eventually launched their mail order business was a deal with QVC to promote their products.

Since then, they have partnered with National Beef, who is the meat supplier for their Kansas City Steak Company online business. This means if you purchase from their online store, while the brand name is Kansas City Steak Company, the meat youre getting is actually from National Beef.
